Bettman singing different tune now for Winnipeg

For the first time, Bettman has publicly come out and finally said what everybody already knew.
this quote comes from the NHL ALL-STAR GAME:

Even though we haven't done the homework, I believe, in an ideal world under the partnership we have with the players and the salary cap, that Winnipeg probably could support an NHL team," Bettman told Hockey Night in Canada host Ron MacLean.

(im sure you all know mine)

It was about time and the only reason he is saying this now is because the pressure is on him, he knows he made mistakes by putting teams in markets where they dont belong so know he is trying to backtrack and support expansion to Canada a place where he is hated the most. I sure hope Winnipeg gets its team back but i also hope that Bettman is no longer with the NHL when it happens.

In the spring of 1995 two Canadian cities of 0.75 million people effectively lost their hockey teams to larger American cities. Can you imagine a major European football club moving to another city? In North America professional sport is strictly business and has none of the cultural legitimacy that it has somehow managed to retain in Europe. It is purely artifical to plonk down a professional ice hockey team in the southern United States where it is never even cold enough to play hockey in natural conditions. It gives the people entertainment in the form of a curious little game played indoors on ice, but they can never connect with the sport on the same level when it is completely absent from their society at large.
This guy put it best.

I hate to be the pessimist, but how was Bettman supposed to answer that question, no they absolutly can't?

Come on guys. I'd love to see the league reduce the number of teams from 30 to 24. Relocate some non-hockey markets to Winnipeg, Quebec and perhaps even another one in southern Ontario like Waterloo or something but we all know it's not going to happen. Bettman is hell-bent on getting a lucrative TV deal and that surely won't arrive with more Canadian cities in the mix.

Americans couldn't give a rats arse for hockey in their own country, what would possibly incline some of you to believe these big AMerican networks would feel compelled to broadcast a game in Quebec or Manitoba for that matter?

lol......ah cinque!..when i posted this, i knew you would be the one. the one to say just what you did. but tell me how your last pharagraph makes sense?....i do agree with you. im sure bettman knew the audience he was speaking to, but remember, just a couple of all star games before, he said winnipeg isnt even on our radar.. i also agree, there will NEVER be the big tv deal coming. but you know i will disagree on winnipeg regaining entry to the league. its a matter of when now, not if.
