Schiano is a good one.

It will be tough to keep him, though.

Miami official: Canes to target Rutgers' Schiano

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano, a former Hurricanes defensive coordinator, has been targeted by several of Miami's influential boosters as the top choice to replace deposed coach Larry Coker, a school official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Thursday.

However, it is unclear whether Schiano has any interest in leaving the Scarlet Knights, who have emerged as a contender in the Big East Conference and were ranked among the top 10 teams nationally this season. Schiano is an attractive choice for Miami because he and his coaching staff heavily recruit Florida high schools.

Three candidates who have been mentioned among possible replacements at Miami have indicated they're not interested in the job. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, who won a national championship at Florida, said this week that he has no interest in other jobs. Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville, a former Miami assistant, told ESPN.com Tuesday night that he has no interest in returning to the Hurricanes.

And Georgia coach Mark Richt, a former Miami quarterback, said he wasn't interested in returning to coach his alma mater, and the hefty buyout in his contract with the Bulldogs would probably preclude the Hurricanes from hiring him anyway.

If the Hurricanes can't lure a high-profile coach to replace Coker -- Tulsa's Steve Kragthorpe and Wisconsin athletics director Barry Alvarez have also been mentioned as possible replacements -- there is a possibility that current Miami defensive coordinator Randy Shannon would be considered.

Shannon, a Miami native, is recognized as one of the country's best defensive coordinators and his unit was perhaps the lone bright spot on the team this season. The Hurricanes were ranked eighth nationally in total defense before Thursday night's game against Boston College and they limited the Eagles to only 193 yards offense.

Shannon, 40, was a starting linebacker on Miami's 1987 national championship team and has worked as an assistant at his alma mater since 1991, including the last six seasons as defensive coordinator.

But because Coker was elevated from offensive coordinator to head coach when Butch Davis left for the Cleveland Browns after the 2000 season, Miami might be hesitant to give Shannon the job this time.

Shannon also is believed to be a candidate to replace Florida International coach Don Stock, who resigned Nov. 15. The Golden Panthers, one of only two winless Division I-A teams this season, were involved in an ugly melee with the Hurricanes in Miami's 35-0 win on Oct. 14.

If this happens....half of the Miamians in the NJ School roster will be heading back home, where they belong !!!! :dielaugh:

(15) Rutgers 38, Syracuse 7

By TOM CANAVAN, AP Sports Writer
November 25, 2006

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) -- Brian Leonard become Rutgers' career scoring leader and the No. 15 Scarlet Knights moved within a win of earning their first Big East championship with a 38-7 victory over Syracuse on Saturday.

The once-downtrodden Scarlet Knights (10-1, 5-1) can clinch the league and a berth in the Bowl Championship Series, the rewards of a storybook season, by beating No. 7 West Virginia on the road next Saturday in what will easily be the biggest game for the school that was the birthplace of college football in 1869.

The 10-win season is only the second in school history, one shy of the mark set by the Scarlet Knights' undefeated team in 1976. They were honored at halftime Saturday.

Leonard rushed for 106 yards and scored on a pair of 2-yard, second-half TD runs, giving 266 points. That broke the mark of 261 set kicker Kennan Starzell from 1976-79.

A week after throwing a career-worst four interceptions in a Rutgers' shocking loss to Cincinnati, Mike Teel rebounded with touchdown passes of 38 and 28 yards to a wide-open Kenny Britt.

Ray Rice ran for 107 yards and a touchdown and Jeremy Ito added a 32-yard field goal.

Safety Courtney Greene had an interception and a forced fumble as the Scarlet Knights kept Syracuse (4-8, 1-6) off the scoreboard until Andrew Robinson hit Jawad Nesheiwat with a 14-yard touchdown pass with 7:44 to go.

Rutgers dominated from the start despite having Willie Foster's 99-yard touchdown return on the opening kickoff nullified by an illegal block.

Taking over at their own 12, Rutgers needed eight plays to find the end zone, aided by a 15-yard facemask penalty on Tanard Jackson on a third-down sack. Two plays later Teel and Britt combined for a 22-yard pass. Rice capped the drive with a 10-yard run, his 17th touchdown of the season. The 100-yard game was his eighth of the season.

Greene picked off a fluttering pass by Perry Patterson on the next possession and returned it 26 yards to the Syracuse 38. On first down, Rutgers went with play-action and Teel found Britt all alone for a walk-in score.

A 33-yard punt gave Rutgers the ball at its own 49 late in the second quarter and Rutgers needed seven plays to extend the lead to 21-0 at halftime. A hurdling Leonard got 10 yards early in the drive and Teel capped it, hitting Britt on a post pattern. It was only the second time this season Teel has thrown two touchdowns in a game.

Leonard scored on Rutgers opening drive of the second half on a 2-yard run. The nine-play drive covered 48 yards, all on the ground. He capped the scoring by carrying the last nine plays for 48 yards, going the final 2 yards with :08 to go.

Well they got their asses handed to them. When I look a Ray Rice, I usually frown because if I had the right guidance I could have ended up playing college. Why do I frown when I watch him play? I played against him in High School football.

Rutgers will play Kansas State in the Texas Bowl, which will be played in Houston.

Kansas State are 7-5 and 4-4 in the Big 12, very winnable game for the Scarlet Knights
