Record-Setting 2005 Season For Bucs

Jeff Berlinicke - Scout.com

January 20, 2006 at 1:06pm ET
Marks fall by the wayside in light of Bucs big season

By Jeff Berlinicke

0 The year wasn't a total loss for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers . Not only did they replace the 5-11 record of 2004 with an 11-5 reversal in 2005, there were several individual achievements to laud.

Wide receiver Joey Galloway became the most prolific single season scorer in Bucs history with two touchdowns in the season finale against the Saints to finish with a career-high 10 for the season. Three players - Kevin House , Mark Carrier, and Bruce Hill previously held the record with nine.

Rookie Cadillac Williams ran for 434 yards in the Bucs first three games, an NFL record for a player in his first three career games. He missed six games in the middle of the season with a foot injury, but still mounted a 1,178-yard season, topping Reggie Cobb's previous Bucs rookie record of 1,071. Errict Rhett is the only other Buc rookie to go over 1,000 yards.

Williams also rushed for more than 100 yards six times, topping the previous Bucs record of five for any player, not just a rookie.

Two defensive standouts - Shelton Quarles and Simeon Rice - also came close to setting team records. Quarles had 198 tackles, including 20 in the regular season finale to fall just short of Derrick Brooks ' team record, and Rice had 14 sacks to fall short of the club record by one.

Finally, punter Josh Bidwell punted for a gross average of 45.6 yards, shattering the Bucs previous record of 43.3. The effort earned Bidwell his first trip to the Pro Bowl.

Difference Between Bucs and Super Bowl

Jeff Berlinicke - Scout.com
January 23, 2006
Bucs need to follow example of Seahawks, Steelers.

By Jeff Berlinicke

TAMPA - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers don't have to look far to see what it is that led the Seahawks and Steelers to the Super Bowl.

The similarities are amazing. Both Super Bowl contenders win with tight defenses, consistent if not spectacular quarterbacks, and running games that can eat up three to four yards per carry and not turn the ball over.

It sounds simple, but there's a reason the Bucs will be watching the game on television. The Steelers win with ball control. Jerome Bettis eats up yards and doesn't turn the ball over - except for the near fateful play in the second round of the playoffs against the Colts. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger isn't expected to make the big play; he's just expected to not make mistakes and hand off. The Bucs quarterback Chris Simms has the same job. He succeeded, handing off to Cadillac Williams when Williams was healthy, and not making the big mistake.

It's the same formula most of the recent Super Bowl champs have followed ranging from Baltimore (2000) to the Bucs (2002) and New England's three championships. Seattle runs the same type of system. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck makes few mistakes and is content to hand off to Shawn Alexander or the dependable fullback Mack Strong . Neither Super Bowl quarterback will throw for 300 yards per game, just as Brad Johnson didn't do for the Bucs in 2002. It's all about ball control. New England quarterback Tom Brady will never average 300 per game, but he doesn't make mistakes.

The key isn't to have a Peyton Manning or Dan Marino, neither of whom has ever won the Big One. It's having a Bettis or Strong who can chew up yardage, especially in January.

That's what the Bucs are lacking. Williams will gain plenty of yards, and he doesn't fumble, but he isn't durable enough to carry it 30 times per game. That's necessary in January in Chicago or Green Bay. Michael Pittman is fumble-prone. Williams missed six games this year with an injury to his foot, and with his slashing style, Bucs fans can expect more of that.

Fans are going to shout for an offensive lineman to be the major off-season focus, especially if the underrated Kenyatta Walker leaves via free agency, but what the Bucs really need is a bus, just like the one that got he Steelers to the Super Bowl while the Bucs stay at home watching.

Tiki Barber works out with soldiers

By JOHN NADEL, AP Sports Writer
February 7, 2006

KAPOLEI, Hawaii (AP) -- Tiki Barber's young sons woke him around 5 a.m., understandable considering the five-hour time difference from the family's New York home.

In essence, 3 1/2 -year-old AJ and 23-month old Chason were serving as an alarm clock for their father, who was out the door shortly thereafter for a special workout that had nothing to do with football.

Barber, in Hawaii for Sunday's Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium, went through a physical training session Tuesday morning with more than 100 soldiers who will be deployed Wednesday to Japan before going to Iraq next summer.

The New York Giants' star and two law enforcement friends from New York had a chance meeting Sunday night with U.S. Army Capt. Rob Wolfe, who invited the trio to participate in physical training with his troops.

"We play this game and it's entertaining. Ultimately, it's self-serving," Barber said. "I'm proud and inspired they do what they do for freedom. These kids are doing their job. Good kids, too."

Included in the workout was a three-mile run that Barber said "kicked my butt."

"It was just a jog for them," Barber said with a smile.

Barber spoke to the group, as did one of his companions, New York City detective Kenny Cardona.

"He told them, `We got this covered on the home front. You guys do it overseas,"' Barber said.

Wolfe expressed his thanks, saying: "That hour-and-a-half or so will last these guys a lifetime. They are like a bunch of giddy girls today. To have someone like Tiki Barber come and see them is huge."

A few hours later, Barber practiced for the first time with his NFC teammates, including twin brother Ronde, a cornerback with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"This practice is a joke," Tiki said with a smile in comparing it to his workout earlier in the day. "This is vacation."

Tiki is playing in his second Pro Bowl; Ronde his third. They both made it last year, becoming teammates for the first time since 1997 when they played their final season at Virginia before going their separate ways in the NFL.

Tiki is a rarity these days -- a running back who's going strong at age 30. Fact is, he's gotten better with age, having reached career highs in rushing the past two seasons by gaining 1,518 yards and averaging 4.7 per carry in 2004 and picking up 1,860 yards and averaging 5.2 this season.

Ronde reached career highs in tackles the last two years with 98 and 99, respectively, and was rewarded with Pro Bowl berths. He also made it in 2001 after intercepting a career-high 10 interceptions. He helped the Bucs reach the Super Bowl the following year by intercepting a fourth-quarter pass thrown by Philadelphia's Donovan McNabb and returning it 92 yards for a touchdown in the NFC Championship Game.

The Bucs beat the Oakland Raiders in the Super Bowl to give Ronde something Tiki doesn't have -- a championship ring.

"That's the only reason you play," Ronde said.

"I've got to get with the program," Tiki said. "You need to believe you're the team of destiny."

The Giants and Bucs both went 11-5 to make the playoffs this season. Both were upset in the first round -- New York lost to Carolina and Tampa Bay fell to Washington.

"Equally as good during the year, equally as bad in the playoffs," Tiki said.

Both expressed high hopes for the future.

"Our biggest deal is believing we can do it," Ronde said.

"We've got to beat our injury bug. Other than that, we have the pieces in place," Tiki said.

Bucs release Griese, two others in salary-cap moves

March 10, 2006

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Quarterback Brian Griese and two other players were released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday in cost-saving moves that freed more than $7 million in salary-cap space.

The club waived Griese rather than pay him a $2.6 million roster bonus, but remained hopeful of re-signing him.

The veteran of eight seasons with Denver, Miami and Tampa Bay led the Bucs to a 5-1 start before sustaining a season-ending knee injury Oct. 16.

Linebacker Jeff Gooch and offensive lineman Matt Stinchcomb, who both spent last season on injured reserve, also were released.

Last week, the Bucs restructured the contracts of five players -- linebacker Derrick Brooks, defensive tackle Anthony McFarland, center John Wade, running back Michael Pittman and tight end Anthony Becht -- to provide salary-cap relief.

In six games, the 30-year-old Griese completed 64.4 percent of his passes for 1,136 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. He was replaced by Chris Simms, who rebounded from losing his first two starts to help the Bucs win the NFC South and earn their first playoff berth since 2002.

Simms signed a one-year, $2.1 million contract March 1. Coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen have said they want Griese back, too.

Bucs re-sign Alstott , Hovan

March 11, 2006

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Mike Alstott is returning for an 11th season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The six-time Pro Bowl fullback, who also considered the prospect of retiring, agreed Saturday to a one-year contract with the only pro team he's played for. He's the Bucs' career touchdowns leaders with 68, and his 4,917 yards rushing rank second in club history.
The Bucs also re-signed defensive tackle Chris Hovan, who joined the club last season after spending the first five years of his career with the Minnesota Vikings. He started 16 games in 2005 and led Tampa Bay defensive linemen with 64 tackles -- the second-highest total of his career.

Although Alstott's role in the offense has dwindled in recent seasons, the 250-pound fullback remained effective in short-yardage and goal-line situations. He rushed for 80 yards on 34 carries and scored six of his seven touchdowns on the ground in 2005.

Alstott turned 32 in December and had been seeking a contract similar to one that paid him about $1.5 million in base salary, plus a signing bonus, last season.

The Bucs restructured the contracts of linebacker Derrick Brooks and four other players last week, then created additional room under the $102 million salary cap by releasing quarterback Brian Griese, linebacker Jeff Gooch and offensive lineman Matt Stinchcomb on Friday.

Go Tampa Bay Go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Alstott kicks but !!!!!!

Fonoti signs with Buccaneers

March 17, 2006

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Free-agent guard Toniu Fonoti signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday.

The former second-round pick has appeared in 34 games, with 33 starts, in four NFL seasons with San Diego and Minnesota. He started two games with the Chargers in 2005 before being traded to the Vikings on Oct. 18.

Fonoti, who made one start for the Vikings, was the 39th player taken in the 2002 draft. He started 14 of 15 games he played as a rookie in San Diego. He missed the 2003 season because of an injury, then started all 16 games for the Chargers in 2004.

Bears reach agreement with QB Griese (Ex Bucs) on five-year deal

March 22, 2006
LAKE FOREST, Illinois (Ticker) - Brian Griese will back up injury-plagued Rex Grossman in 2006.

Less than two weeks after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for salary cap purposes, Griese agreed to terms on a five-year deal with the Chicago Bears on Tuesday.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Griese, 31, provides veteran insurance for the Bears, who plan to start Grossman in 2006. But Grossman suffered a torn right ACL in the third week of the 2004 season and missed the first 13 games of the 2005 campaign due to a broken left ankle. Kyle Orton started 10 games as a rookie and had a passer rating of 59.7 with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

But Griese, who has made 72 caree starts, is coming off a major knee injury. He suffered a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee in an October 16 game against Miami after leading the Bucs to a 5-1 record. Griese completed 112-of-174 passes for 1,136 yards and seven touchdowns with seven interceptions for a passer rating of 79.6.

In eight seasons with Denver, Miami and Tampa Bay, Griese has thrown for 16,344 yards and 103 touchdowns with 78 interceptions for a passer rating of 84.8

Walker re-signs with Buccaneers

March 24, 2006

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Free-agent offensive tackle Kenyatta Walker re-signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday.

The five-year veteran -- all with the Bucs -- has appeared in 72 games with 70 starts. In 2005, he was part of an offensive line that started all 16 games together for the first time in club history.

"Kenyatta started every game last year and helped us make the playoffs," coach Jon Gruden said. "We made great strides on offense last season and it was our goal to keep everyone on board so that we could continue that improvement."

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Team Needs

Frank Coyle, Special to Rivals.com

Tampa Bay Bucs (11-5)

Head Coach - Jon Gruden - Fifth Year

Key needs:

1. Offensive tackle
2. Safety
3. Defensive tackle
4. Cornerback
5. Wide receiver

1. Offensive tackle - The Bucs attempted to sign many veteran offensive lineman in recent years with minimal success. They have adequate lineman Anthony Davis at left tackle and unproven talent behind him. They will get a chance at tackles Eric Winston and Marcus McNeill late in the first round. They also like tackle Daryn Colledge and have him earmarked for the second round. Expect guard and center picks in the middle rounds.

2. Safety - The Bucs lost free safety Dexter Jackson to free agency after parting with John Lynch two seasons ago. They will look to add a potential starter fairly early. They like Daniel Bullocks and Ko Simpson in the second round and Roman Harper in the middle rounds.

3. Defensive tackle – The Bucs re-signed Chris Hovan but have little depth. In the first round, they will consider Gabe Watson. They like Jon Lewis and Orien Harris in the third round.

4. Cornerback - The Bucs have veterans Brian Kelly and Ronde Barber as starters, but only have marginal backups. They hope to add a potential starter, and the best values on the board in the first round could be Tye Hill and Jimmy Williams.

5. Wide receiver - The Bucs are set in their multiple wideout offense but have little depth. Vets Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard are near the end of their careers and the team will look for a replacement. They may put an emphasis on return skills, selecting Willie Reid or Skyler Green.

Insiders’ Insights
The Bucs have made only a few changes in the offseason with an emphasis on re-signing players. They did address one problem area with the addition of guard Toniu Fonoti. The key decision will be how to address the offensive line. Gruden likes Colledge in the second round, a choice which would allow a focus on defense with other first-day selections. Look for them to choose a quality corner in their first two picks. They will consider a defensive tackle or linebacker early if good value is on the board. Tackle is a high priority and should be addressed on the first day.

First-round pick - CB - Tye Hill - Clemson - Fast cover man may be the highest rated prospect on the board.

Alternate pick - OT - Eric Winston - Miami - Athletic left tackle has the package to be a fine NFL blocker.

Buccaneers, Manchester United owner released from hospital

April 24, 2006

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Manchester United owner Malcolm Glazer was released from a hospital Monday, eight days after the reclusive Palm Beach businessman suffered a stroke.

Glazer, 77, has impaired speech and mobility in his right arm and leg, one of his sons said in a statement released by the Bucs.

"My father's spirits are high and doctors expect his condition to improve with rehabilitation," Joel Glazer said, adding the stroke occurred on April 16 and that the elder Glazer had been hospitalized at Cleveland Clinic.

There are two Cleveland Clinics in Florida, but it was not clear which one Glazer was taken to.

Glazer purchased the Bucs in 1995 for $192 million, then a record for an NFL franchise. In 2005, he gained control of Manchester United with a $1.47 billion takeover sharply opposed by fans of the soccer team.

DRAFT 2006: Bucs seek depth on defense.

By FRED GOODALL, AP Sports Writer
April 27, 2006

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- With 21 of 22 starters returning from a team that won 11 games and made the playoffs for the first time in three years, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers don't sense any glaring weaknesses to address in the NFL draft.

Instead, the NFC South champions are interested in bolstering depth, especially for an aging defense that eventually will need replacements for high-salaried players Derrick Brooks, Ronde Barber and Simeon Rice.

The Bucs have the 23rd pick in the first round. The deep pool of cornerbacks and linebackers available might make it difficult to pass up an opportunity to reinforce one of those positions.

"The No. 1 thing is we want to get the best player -- regardless of what position, the best player for the Bucs," Dennis Hickey, the club's director of college scouting, said. "The reason we've been so successful is not trying to reach for a specific need."

Florida State cornerback Antonio Cromartie could be among the cornerbacks available for Tampa Bay's turn. Finding a linebacker to groom to some day take over for Brooks could require moving up to land Florida State's Ernie Sims or Iowa's Chad Greenway, while Alabama's DeMeco Ryans and Ohio State's Bobby Carpenter could be possibilities at No. 23.

What Tampa Bay is less likely to select is a player who may have been a bit of an underachiever in college but improved his stock in the draft based on an impressive time in the 40-yard dash or on superb workouts.

"That's against our philosophy," Hickey said. "No. 1, it's all about tape for me and our scouts and our coaches. ... It's not about 40 times, it's not about measurables."

For the second straight year, the Bucs have at least one pick in every round. The 2005 draft brought three starters on offense: running back Carnell "Cadillac" Williams, tight end Alex Smith and guard Dan Buenning.

Rebuilding the offense has been a focus since winning the Super Bowl four seasons ago. But with nine-time Pro Bowl selection Brooks turning 33 earlier this month and cornerbacks Barber and Brian Kelly entering their 10th and ninth seasons, respectively, it's probably time to address the future of the defense.

"Having all of our draft picks is something that I've learned to like," said coach Jon Gruden, whose arrival from the Oakland Raiders in 2002 cost the Bucs two No. 1 and two No. 2 draft picks over three years.

Williams was the fifth player taken last year and rushed for 1,178 yards and six touchdowns to run away with the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Third-round pick Smith was Tampa Bay's second-leading receiver with 41 catches, and fourth-rounder Buenning started every game at left guard.

"We were able to get some players that are not only prospects for our future, but guys that have played at a high level on an NFC South championship team," Gruden said.

After winning 11 games to make the playoffs for the first time since their Super Bowl year, the Bucs feel they're definitely a team on the rise.

Gruden came to Tampa Bay with a reputation for not wanting to play young, inexperienced players. But salary-cap restrictions and injuries -- not to mention the success of draft picks Williams, Michael Clayton, Smith and quarterback Chris Simms -- have left him no choice but to come to rely on them.

"We have improved the foundation of this team with young players," general manager Bruce Allen said. "It gives you high hopes."

Bucs, Manchester United owner hospitalized after second stroke

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Buccaneers and Manchester United owner Malcolm Glazer remained hospitalized Friday, nearly three weeks after suffering a second stroke.

The 77-year-old Glazer was readmitted to Cleveland Clinic on April 30. He suffered an initial stroke on April 16 and was released from the Florida hospital eight days later.

"Doctors expect my father to return home in the next few weeks," Bucs executive vice president Joel Glazer said in a statement released by the team. "As a result of this stroke his rehabilitation period will be longer and more challenging."

The first stroke left the elder Glazer with impaired speech and mobility in his right arm and leg.

There are two Cleveland Clinics in Florida, however the Glazer family has not revealed which one the reclusive Palm Beach businessman was taken to.

Glazer purchased the Bucs in 1995 for $192 million, then a record for an NFL franchise. In 2005, he gained control of Manchester United with a $1.47 billion takeover sharply opposed by fans of the soccer team.

Buccaneers sign WR David Boston

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Receiver David Boston, who has missed most of the past two seasons, signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday.

Boston, a Pro Bowl selection in 2001 when he had 98 receptions for the Arizona Cardinals, was limited to five games over the past two years with the Miami Dolphins because of injuries.

All five of those games came in 2005, when he caught four passes for 80 yards before being placed on injured reserve with a knee injury.

A first-round draft pick of the Cardinals in 1999, Boston has 315 career catches for 4,699 yards and 25 touchdowns in seven seasons with Arizona, San Diego and Miami.

The Bucs also announced that receiver B.J. Johnson was released.
