Derby of the Low Countries 2016

According to nieuwsblad.be the last time that Holland were able to win against us, brave little Belgians, was almost 20 years ago ... back then you had an awfully good squad Later this year, either the Dutch or Belgian FA will be inviting a few friendly neighbours over to play a game ... unless Holland or Belgium end up in the play-offs ... we might get to see at least 1 more Derby of the Low Countries before the Nations League kicks off.

Now that Belgium have an awfully good squad themselves they may end up losing for a change

The 126th Derby of the Low Countries is edging closer ... it has been well over 4 years already since the previous one which ended in a big 4-2 win for Belgium ... despite a few defensive woes Hazard, De Bruyne, Lukaku, Meunier, Carrasco et al. are in top form ... expecting another hugely entertaining derby with plenty of goals ... like last time

Roberto Martinez presser around 12 CET ... maybe a few moments of Dutch/French/German but usually most of the presser is in English.

A few players will most likely have to give this one a miss, Vermaelen, Chadli et al. ... Dembele, Alderweireld and T.Hazard are ??? ... hoping Martinez will start a decent XI and doesn't turn it into a crapshoot too soon with lots of subs.

1-1 in the end. Holland lucky to get anything from this game. Very negative approach, came across as scared. Probably realistic though, looking at the difference in quality between the two sides and a valid tactic as Belgium continue their struggle to break down defensive sides. Give them space and they tear you apart on the break, especially in their new 3-4-3 formation with both wingers and wingbacks overlapping.

Van Dijk looked good, as did Steek. Not much positive news otherwise though, Veltman is a joke, Wijnaldum the invisible #10, Klaassen nothing but a hard worker etc.

That was ugly af ... not a great game by any stretch ... hey-ho, at least Belgium will go unbeaten in the Derby of the Low Countries for twenty plus years and counting.

Only Austria v. Hungary and Argentina v. Uruguay have been contested more often than our long-standing tradition of rivalry ... many claim that rivalries are the lifeblood of football ... looking at all those empty seats and the lack of excitement in one of the most contested derbies ... that omen doesn't bode well for international football as its lifeblood is draining away.

PS the match stats

Thought both Dutch games weren't great to watch. Probably didn't help that I was doing two things at once.

A lot of mediocrity or rather standard players in this current Dutch side. I don't think it matters whether you go for the younger Dost / L. de Jong or old Van Persie / Huntelaar as was opted for in Studio Voetbal. Like Krle said, our midfield is rather workmanlike at best at international level. Best we can do is make ourselves hard to beat. That will already get us somewhere and if our wingers aren't great, have an overlapping full-back like Karsdorp or Van Aanholt who have proven that they can at least consistently be a menace going forward for their clubs.

Regarding our wingers, Berghuis really is inconsistent , Depay was unwatchable bar his two goals and has been MIA for more than a season, Elia is inconsistent too and our only international class winger Robben is back to being injuryprone.

Have to hope that Ramselaar can grow to be more than just a workmanlike player in midfield.

Found it a shame that Zegelaar didn't play at all btw. Would have wanted to see him. Not that I'm expecting the messiah. Just to see what he's like.

Ironically the defence might become the best part of the side. IMO De Vrij and Van Dijk would make a strong duo, add Kongolo as back-up and you're set for years. Karsdorp on the right and one of Blind/Zeegelaar/Van Aanholt on the left. Perhaps even Sinkgraven if he continues to develop. In that case I'd consider switching to a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 like Belgium, cause this base looks pretty damn solid and the wingbacks play a very important role in it.

Van Dijk - De Vrij - Kongolo
Karsdorp - Strootman - Blind - Sinkgraven
Robben - Janssen - Promes

IMO that's a pretty good side that could definitely hurt teams on the break. It would be quite a culture shock for Dutch football enthusiasts, but in the end the results matter.

Played on the break under Bert in South Africa, Louis in Brazil...maybe time Dutch football enthusiasts wake up and smell the coffee, if they start complaining again.

If only Danny Blind at least selected de Vrij. He seems to be in love with Bruma.

Yeah, no doubt!

Bruma over De Vrij is a crime to football and he should be brought to court over that decision.
