Euro 2020 Qualifying: Final Tournament on Our Own Turf?

Here is the seeding for the first phase of the Euro 2020 qualifiers, the Nations League. Of course we could take this as a standalone tournament, but it's not like we're in Group A for this to be important.

Nations League C:

Pot 1: Hungary, ROMANIA, Scotland, Slovenia
Pot 2: Greece, Serbia, Albania, Norway
Pot 3: Montenegro, Israel, Bulgaria, Finland
Pot 4: Cyprus, Estonia, Lithuania

Best:
Romania
Albania
Bulgaria
Lithuania

Worst:
Romania
Serbia
Montenegro?
(Cyprus)

Contra's first goal as coach: Win League C.

Just a reminder of how this works...

Quote:
Quote:
The format [of the Nations League] was criticized for allegedly allowing teams not good enough to qualify through the regular qualifiers to make it to the EURO finals. Also, teams already eliminated from the World Cup qualifiers would benefit from losing games on purpose, in order to drop to a lower league and improve their chances of qualifying through the Nations League playoffs.
So let's explain this...

The traditional qualifying round for Euro'20 will be made of 10 groups, where the top-2 of each group will qualify directly to the final tournament (that makes 20 teams). The other 4 teams to complete the 24 participants in Euro'20 will be set by the NL and will be one from every league/division (league A, B, C and D).

So if you are in an inferior league and can't qualify directly (through the traditional qualifiers), you have more chances of reaching Euro'20 than if you are in a top league, because your rivals will be considerably weaker.

So keep this in mind: The Euro'20 play-offs (baraj) will be set by the NL. Through the traditional qualifiers you can only qualify directly.

Quote:
September 2018 to November 2018: NL Groups stage.

March 2019 to November 2019: Regular qualifiers for Euro'20.

March 2020: Euro'20 play-offs*

*Who plays the Euro'20 play-offs?
The answer is: the group winners of each NL league/division (each league will be made of 4 groups). If a group winner qualified directly through the regular qualifiers, its place goes to the best ranked team of the division not qualified yet to the final tournament.
So you have to play a league semifinal and a league final to win the place in Euro'20.

So we have to win the group in order to have a lifesaver in the case we suck in the regular qualifiers.

As it was previously said, we better were in the League D

One year till the first game. It`ll be a long wait. I hope we organize a good set of friendlies. The good thing is that Contra will have a lot of time to prepare the campaign

Specially because our seeding will make the Euro qualifiers very difficult

We don't yet know how the seeding for the regular qualifiers work. The Nations League results might count. For now, we'd be in Pot 3.

About preparation games before NL I guess: two now in November, one in March, a couple in May/June and a possible but not probable just before the start of the NL.

We'll see if something is done for Romania 'B' in the winter break.

Something like that, I think.

Who I'd like us to play against:

Sweden (not now, obviously), Iceland, then maybe some non-Euro teams before the WC... I guess Japan or Korea would be cool. And then a couple of strong teams, maybe Uruguay (or Brazil if they want us). Portugal would be good, too.

Euro 2020 Qualifying: Final Tournament on Our Own Turf?

Iceland would be sick!

Strong Nordic teams like those definitely a good idea to evaluate ourselves and learn from. They often play aerial (a big problem for us) and have very physically adept/natural athletes. Strong sides who've been consistent as of late and both Sweden and Iceland have beaten bigger teams in recent times, so it would be very good prep.

I like the thought of returning to some South American games, they usually end in draws or very narrow losses, then again that was under coaches like Piturca lol. I think we lost 1-0 to a Brazil with a young Neymar and an old and fat Ronaldo the pearl of the new generation in and the other going out - how many teams could say they faced that kind of Brazil

The others were 1-1 with Uruguay, 0-0 with Argentina, and I can't remember with Paraguay but I think that was a tie too. Oh and of course there was the 3-2 with Chile even under Daum lol.

Of the bigger European teams, I'd like Portugal for sure, maybe England or France if not. Netherlands could be interesting too in their current situation.

If we do Asia, Japan for sure. They've been building their football up for years, their investment will pay off in the near future like Iceland's imo. It's a little tricky for them to get competing matches though being in Asia and all, they get less good preposition for World Cup but also almost guaranteed a spot each time.. anyway their disciplined, technical team would be good one to go up against and try and a play a nice football, maybe even take a leaf or two out of their book

And we had Sanmartean and Gabi Muresan If I remember correctly Muresan hit the crossbar with a freekick that game. Legendary game indeed

From FRF:

So, more or less, we better win (at least) the group in the C league if we want to go to Euro. Otherwise... pot 4 awaits.

That sounds very unfair. So, no matter how well we do in the next year we can`t be ranked better than pot 3? That`s insane

Urna 2: Grecia, Serbia, Albania, Norvegia
Urna 3: Muntenegru, Israel, Bulgaria, Finlanda
Urna 4: Cipru, Estonia, Lituania

The draw is tomorrow.

True.

Probably the easiest would be:
Norway
Israel/Finland
Lithuania

Toughest:
Serbia
Montenegro
Cyprus/Estonia

IMO toughest would be a 3-team group. We can always **** up and relegate, then.
