We do not defy statistics except when we do.

A 2-1 would be a good result for us, I suppose.

With a 1-1 or a 2-2 there, we screw their plan. But it will depend on who will score first in the 2nd leg.

A draw with goals is not so bad in Athens. The Greeks expect to win the 1st leg or get a 0-0. They'll consider any other result negative.

I'd say we are ****ed if we don't score in Greece. And that's the danger for the teams that play the 1st leg away. They don't feel the need of scoring away, since it's the 1st leg and they think they will score in the 2nd leg. And then the rival scores in your home* and you're in big problems.

*The opponent starts the 2nd leg away knowing exactly how many goals they will need to advance. It's a BIG difference compared to how you started the 1st leg away.

I agree with you that a 1-1 or 2-2 isn't a bad result away.

That said, we know one thing: Romanian teams have this tendency to get scored on in the last minutes. Mazic is the ref in Bucharest... It wouldn't be the first time he awards a penalty in the last 10 minutes of the game vs our team...

So I think with a tie in which we score in Athens Pitzi will go for the 0-0, which, as we all know, is dangerous.

Anyway, I also agree with you that the team playing 2nd leg away has an advantage in that regard. Also, the pressure of the fans will be much bigger for our team in Bucharest IMHO.

I hope Pitzi realises this and he'll try to trick them in Greece.

It also seems it will be very cold on the 19th in Romania (around freezing)--maybe also an advantage for us.

I've been following football since 1996, and I remember 1998 WC, barely... This would be the first WC which I will fully watch our team play. And I think there's something more special about a WC than about an Euro...

For me this is almost a win win situation, no matter how it ends. i have a feeling that Greece will advance....like foresta said, without a win away i don't see us qualifying.

the beauty of a play-off matchup is that you don't need victory's in order to advance..you can draw twice in a row and still qualify for the World Cup...I think Pizturca will take full advantage of this situation...

yeah, this sounds very Piturcian

but i don't see the advantages in the way Piti tries to succeed in general :shakepalm:

the worst thing which can happen is that we don't qualify and he stays...the 2nd worst thing would be we qualify and he stays...either way he wins

If we go strictly by feeling, I have a feeling we'll advance. I was right with Pandurii vs Braga (I really wanted that team for their opponent). I was wrong in 2005 when I thought we'd come back and qualify for the WC. I was also right in 2003. I remember watching the Denmark match and saying "I know we'll get scored on in the last minute" (not those words, but that was the meaning)

That said, nothing I've seen in the qualifying campaign makes me think that we'll qualify. :shakepalm: Logically speaking Greece is the favorite.

Romania - Greece 3-0 (WC 1990 qualifiers)

Attention to the offside try by the Greeks at 2:58

Greece - Romania 0-0, in the same qualifiers

We will most likely qualify, but the sad part is that Niculae, Cocis, Nicolita, and co.. will be in the final squad for the tournament and it's such a shame because we have so many better players, and if it's for money.. so many better players who can be sold for much more than a cocis, niculae or nicolita.

Urmează ca Piţurcă să anunţe un înlocuitor în următoarele ore.
I guess that will be Dragos Grigore.

Chiriches is an important player, but at least we have Gardos in good form now. He isn't as fast as the Spurs player but he's better in air balls.

Chiriches... It's unreal how fast he is, actually.

Yeah, gardos is in good shape and I hope he can rise up to the challenge.

I think the couple Gardos-Goian could possibly be better for us in the tur, because Mitroglu is lethal in the air, and a simple mistake from Chiriches could really compromise our qualification.
He could play in Bucharest with a mask on, that's what some peeps from the FRF said. If not, it will be interesting to see if Piti will still call a defender

I don't think we particularly need one (Luchin, Gaman, Hoban)... Maybe a DM would be more indicated.
