National Team: The Goalkeepers

Right now the 4 options for the GK spot in the NT look clear:

Ciprian Tatarusanu (Steaua Bucharest)

Cristian Balgradean (Dinamo Bucharest)

Costel Pantilimon (Manchester City)

Silviu Lung (Astra Ploiesti)

All in all, not a bad generation of keepers. This decade seems to be solved with them, and other promising GKs that can appear.

Which order would you set for the NT at this moment? Who's your number 1?

Piturca seems to trust Tatarusanu, with Balgradean as alternative. Which is OK for me.

I think Pantilimon should be our number one. When he played any game for Manchester City he performed very well, and he's at one of the best clubs in the world.

If Mutu was at Manchester City and sat on the bench the whole year, would we risk not putting him on the pitch for a national team game only because he hasn't played?

I feel that sure the other keepers play week in and week out, but Costel is our best keeper all around.

Here's a thought for you guys, could the other 3 get a MOM against liverpool? (I believe thats who he got it against) making around 8-10 saves?

My order:

1. Tatarusanu
2. Pantilimon
3. Balgradean
...
4. Lung jr.

Claudiu, I think even Plesca could get a MOM against Liverpool. You can't judge on one match...

Tatarusanu
Pantilimon
Lung Jr.
Balgradean

I trust Tatarusanu, but he has been making some mistakes in recent weeks. Pantilimon really left a strong impression on me when I watched France beat Romania 2-0 in Paris for these last qualifiers, in the last few minutes.

Tatarusanu is the only one i really rely on for the moment. I think he and Panti are overall very similar, both are very agile, able to stop incredible balls, but altough they are both extremely tall their biggest problem is on the air. Still Panti rarely holds the ball, which allows dangerous rebounds, while Tata has improved there

Both make big mistakes from time to time, but Panti´s ones seem worst to me. He still has great potential and i´m sure he is improving in England. But a keeper that doesn´t play regularly can´t be trusted, cause not playing hurts them the most. I guess he´ll be loaned soon and there he´ll surely become a real contender again. Tata shouldn´t stay in Romania anymore either, he´s ready for the next step.

Balgradean has improved incredibly, and according to stats his numbers are sometimes the best in Liga I, but i still think he needs more time. He´s ok as third.
Lung Jr has lost a lot of ground since he appeared and a wonderful promise. He seems to allow goals quite easily even when he is capable of wonderful saves. Maybe in time he´ll mature and become a great keeper, but for the moments there are some doubts about him.

I think the keeper has been one of the weakest spots since i watch the romanian NT. Our keepers always had troubles in air balls and have been mistake prone. Only Lobont in his best moments transmitted security to the team.
I think now we are in a very good moment, but our keepers need to play at a higher level first.

Air balls, the eternal problem of our keepers (the Prunea's curse I'd say). Strange that even these very tall GKs still keep the same problem.

I think that is because knowing how and when to go for an aerial ball is a technical thing, and our players in general show technical flaws

Instinct + communication with teammates.... it gets technical when you consider where the keeper is positioned when a cross is being made.

My personal ranking for now:

Tatarusanu
Lung Jr.
Balgradean
Panti

Tata = IMO the most complete keeper out there for now
Lung Jr. = Very solid generally, probably better than Tata but he has no experience when we're talking important games
Balgradean = I noticed his talent back then when he played for UTA... I actually feel like an expert considering he made it this far already... still he's got things to learn.
Panti = A keeper needs games to stay safe... I'd be worried to have a back up keeper between our posts and it doesn't matter where he plays at.

For once we have a good crop of goalies that are young and pretty good.

As GICA said though, hope they fix their air ball problems

I'm starting to think that the one with less problems in air balls from these four is Lung.

Lung Jr. is pretty similar to Tatarusanu... it's really a question of who's better at dealing with pressure.

Nice interview with Lobont.

http://www.prosport.ro/fotbal-intern...urilor-9697571
Look at this part:

You gotta love a player that comes with such passion to the NT

1- Panti
2-Tata
3-Lung
4- Balgradean

in my opinion, there is much pressure on the goalkeepers, this has affected their performance, especially Tatarusanu...because of this I agree with the convocation of Lobont, to be a guide to the younger

It's possible that we start the next qualifiers with Lobont.

But in 1 year or so, the GK should be other.

UPDATING (March 2016):

Tatarusanu and Pantilimon are clearly the two main options. Tata is not doing the season of his life but he's still number 1 for Iordanescu. Pantilimon doing well whenever he plays in England, but right now he's a reserve at Watford.

Silviu Lung junior is losing ground as third goalkeeper due to his injury. Nita is doing great at Steaua and he'll probably be called for the friendlies in March.
