Bulgaria - Romania 17.11.2007 - 19 years since our last win on their turf

Bulgaria - Romania

Date: 17.11.2007
Hour: 18:00
Location: Vasil Levski National Stadium, Sofia

We met only 6 times in the last 20 years:

19/10/1988 Bulgaria - Romania 1 - 3 (1990 WCQ)
17/05/1989 Romania - Bulgaria 1 - 0 (1990 WCQ)
17/10/1990 Romania - Bulgaria 0 - 3 (1992 ECQ)
20/11/1991 Bulgaria - Romania 1 - 1 (1992 ECQ)
13/06/1996 Bulgaria - Romania 1 - 0 (EURO 1996)
02/09/2006 Romania - Bulgaria 2 - 2 (2008 WCQ)

So it's been 19 years since our last win on their home turf.

Foreign-based players called by Piturca:

Cosmin Contra (Getafe CF), George Ogararu (AFC Ajax Amsterdam), Gabriel Tamas (AJ Auxerre), Cristian Chivu (FC Internzionale Milano), Razvan Rat (FC Sahtior Donetk), Paul Codrea (AC Siena), Laurentiu Rosu (Recreativo de Huelva), Razvan Cocis (Lokomotiv Moscova), Florentin Petre (TSKA Sofia), Adrian Mutu (Fiorentina), Daniel Niculae (AJ Auxerre) si Ciprian Marica (VfB Stuttgart)

You say 19 years since our last win on their turf. But I see that our last defeat there was even before

That 1990 score is definitely not pretty to look at. Even worse however is that horrible 1-0 result from Euro 96. What a nightmare that was, it should have been 1-1 with that goal that went off the bar and behind the goal line that wasn't allowed. Brutal.

Moving on however and this is an important game with our World Cup qualifying seeding on the line. Besides that it would be fantastic to get first in the group and also secure a win especially after dominating them in the game at home just to collapse at the end and only get a draw. Let's keep the momentum we have now going!

Hmm... I actually remember the EURO1996 game, even though I was 5 at the time... I knew it should've been a goal p

In other news, the result is important only for the improvement of our chances to qualify for the WC... That said, we're better than they are, with us qualified and all, and I'm expecting 2 goals by Mutu

In watching their game vs Albania, one could see their defense is weak, so Piti should play nice, attacking football...

What I would like from this game is first not to lose and second to test new players and schemes.

The foreigners selection shows no interest in tests, in fact it´s very conservative with the return of veterans like Rosu, Contra and Petre.

how many foreigners would deserve a shot tbh?

Munteanu who just started playing 1st team football?

Sg.Radu who flopped against Belarus?

Stoica who doesn't even make a belgium 1st squad that isn't as strong as our top teams?

Sanmartean who now has stomach problems and before that couldnt keep on for longer than 70 mins top?

Cernat who delivers once in a blue moon in an inferior league to ours?

I really do hope he tests some home-playing guys though... F.Costea, C.Petre, C.Bratu, Trica, Alexa, Buga, Herea, Szekely, Bucur all played really good football lately and could potentially start in a club of the top 3 leagues

Well Florentin Petre is leaving his club and has had troubles in getting into the starting line-up, while Rosu hasn´t played a full game for months, same with Contra.

Rosu and Contra are likely to get dropped, since they haven't played much; pretty sure Cocis (and Fl. Petre) will be called.

Sanmartean has adductor problems, apparently he has to have an operation... Damn it, can Romanian players never be fit?

Do you think Piti will call up Fl. Costea this time? It's worth a shot, I agree... There are many players who deserve a shot, but not many will get it.

Haha, yeah, I was exaggerating... p

We didn't give Trica a fair chance... he only played what? 20 mins alltogether for the NT?

Bucur might be small but his attributes aren't his physical presence but his speed, agility and scoring instinct

He is not crap. He is one of the best players for CFR, and they are leading the Liga I at the moment.

Trica could be top goal scorer for Barca....and he's still crap. I mean crap literally more than in the metaphoric sense

Fl. Petre does his job well a lot of the times he plays. He's a horrible finisher though.

Fl. Petre seems to really do well on the NT level...He is not my favourite player but whenever Piti called him up he did well....
