Domenech to name his World Cup squad in early May

Domenech to name his World Cup squad in early May

Quote:
PARIS (AP)—France coach Raymond Domenech will name his 23-man World Cup squad in early May, breaking with his tradition of taking a larger squad and then dropping several players after several days of training.

The French football federation announced on its Web site that Domenech will name his squad on May 2.

France, the 1998 World Cup winner and runner-up to Italy in 2006, plays Uruguay, Mexico and South Africa in Group A at the World Cup. France opens against Uruguay in Cape Town on June 11.

Prior to major competitions, Domenech traditionally took larger squads to increase competition for places but would then cut several players, as he did before the 2008 European Championship.

Before Euro 2008, Domenech visited the hotel rooms of players to tell them they would not be part of his squad—a move that proved unpopular and led to tensions within the squad as nerves set in.

The omitted players then left France’s Alpine training camp in Tignes by helicopter with hordes of photographers taking pictures of them. France failed miserably at Euro 2008, going out in the group stages without winning a game.

Domenech has also dispensed with France’s usual pre-competition training camp at Tignes.

Instead, France will travel to Rades to play Tunisia on May 30, and then plans to head to the French island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean for several days ahead of another friendly against China there in early June.

France plays European Champion Spain at Stade de France on March 3, and also plays Costa Rica on May 25 in Lens.

The 2010 World Cup will be Domenech’s last competition after six years in charge. The French football federation Jean-Pierre Escalettes is likely to name Domenech’s successor prior to the World Cup.

Among those touted to replace Domenech are Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc and Marseille coach Didier Deschamps. Neither has yet to confirm an interest in taking over.

Nasri should not have not been left out. Lack of challenging for Gourcuff spot. Except if Raymond dare to play Ribery in the axis.

Anthony Réveillère (Lyon)
Rod Fanni (Rennes)
Sébastien Squillaci (FC Séville)
Gaël Clichy (Arsenal)

Raymond should reduce the list to 24 soon, 23+1 since Gallas is doubtfull. Planus is doubtfull too since he got injured (knee) and was subbed in the last game against Lens.
