It is a British crown Dependency (colony) in the mediterranean.

On the tip of southern Spain and is a key miltiery base that looks over the Straits of Gibraltar, a very important shipping route.

i also found this on a website but im not sure where the guy got it from so take it with a pinch of salt

The Gibraltar Football Association (GFA) applied to UEFA for independent membership of the soccer confederation, which would enable it to play as a national team in international matches in Europe and around the world (as participation in FIFA flows from UEFA membership).

The Spanish football federation has objected strongly to Gibraltarian membership, leading UEFA to deny entry to the GFA. However, following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), UEFA have now been ordered to overturn their decision, and admit Gibraltar. The Spanish Government has threatened to withdraw Spanish teams, including their national side, from UEFA, although under current rules this would preclude Spanish involvement in all international football.

end football Apartheid in Ireland!!

Before Gibraltar became member of the UEFA, they were a member of the NF Board. Found this post on a forum about Gibraltar when they weren't a member of the UEFA yet:

'GFA (Gibraltar Football Association) is a member of the NF Board, an organisation which `adopts` all the countries who aren´t a member of the FIFA or won´t be accepted as a member by the FIFA.

The following citate came from their website http://www.nf-board.com

´The Association’s object of business is to federate Football Associations which are not affiliated to FIFA, until their permanent affiliation to the said Fédération Internationale de Football Association, with the aim of organising football matches on an international scale regardless of political or religious factors.´ '

Hong Kong isn't a country either, and they are accepted by the FIFA as well Macau belongs to Portugal, but they also have a national team accepted by the FIFA, and there are more examples.

NYON, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Gibraltar was admitted as a provisional member of UEFA on Friday.

The Executive Committee of European soccer's ruling body said in a statement they had "no choice" but to allow the disputed territory provisional membership following an earlier decision by CAS, the Court of Arbitration for Sport, in July.

The statement also pointed out that FIFA, world soccer's governing body, had determined earlier this week that Gibraltar "does not meet the statutory requirements to become a FIFA member."

As a result of Friday's decision, Gibraltar's application for full membership is now set to be discussed at UEFA's Congress in Dusseldorf in January.

The application is rigorously opposed by Spain which claims sovereignty over the British-controlled territory.

UEFA Chief executive Lars-Christer Olsson told a media conference that the Executive Committee was not in favour of Gibraltar's full membership but that its hands were effectively tied by the CAS decision.

"Theoretically we could have said no," Olsson said.

"But when you have a legal structure which recognises CAS as the Supreme Court in sporting matters then it would have been strange to recognise the court but not follow its decision."

Olsson said it would now be up to UEFA's Congress to have the final say, adding that Gibraltar would be given a chance to present its case to the organisation's members.

He warned though that any decision to admit Gibraltar could have ramifications far beyond the disputed territory.

"This is part of a much bigger matter and could open up all sorts of political issues such as the Basque or Catalan questions in Spain or the statutes of the individual states in Germany.

"Politically speaking it is a sensitive issue which is why UEFA wanted to follow FIFA's direction in only allowing members from fully-recognised countries."

UEFA changed its rules accordingly in 2001 but the ruling from CAS noted that Gibraltar's original application had been made two years earlier.

The court stopped short of ordering automatic full membership for the territory but said that the Congress should make its final decision "on the basis of the rules applicable at the time of the initial request - and excluding the application of the rules introduced subsequently."

Great, one more team to be pummelled 10-0. But guess now Faroe Islands and Hungary () can win some more games.

Gibraltar fail

Gibraltar have failed in their attempt to become a member of Uefa.
Spain was a fierce opponent to allowing Gibraltar to become one of Uefa's associations and threatened to boycott any competition the colony competed in.

Only three of Uefa's 52 associations voted in favour of Gibraltar - the English Football Association, the FA of Wales and the Scottish FA.

Gibraltar has a population of 28,000, but has no professional footballers and only 563 registered players.

But Uefa did vote in for Montenegro to become its 53rd full member.

The Serbia & Montenegro Football Association was disbanded in June 2006 following the political split between the two republics.

The acceptance of Montenegro into Uefa had been widely expected and the proposal was carried unanimously

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Quite disgraceful that the other home nation FA didnt vote in favour, a certain Mr Boyce was also running for Vice president votes and not wanting to back a vote so obviously unpopular with the other 46 countries

Why? I mean seriously, why? Would Gibraltar be better if they could add a retired Graeme Le Saux & Matt Le Tissier?
