Chibueze dies aged 23
by di-ve sports

Sunday, 28th January 2007

NIGERIAN and Mqabba striker Ikechukwu Chibueze, one of the most lethal strikers in Malta surprisingly passed away Saturday evening at the young age of 23.

Chibueze was found dead in his bathroom; presumably he died from a heart-attack.

The player was married to Denise, a Maltese from Marsa. They had been married for four years and she frequently saw him perform for his clubs.

The player's funeral will be held at his home town in Nigeria, something that his parents asked for, and were given the go-ahead by his wife.

Chibueze has been playing in Malta since 2002, first as an amateur when he joined Zebbug Rovers and then turning semi-professional for Mqabba in Division 1.

In season 2004/05, he moved to Mosta, helping them win promotion to the Premier League. In his first season in the Premier League, he scored 12 goals in 23 matches.

This year, Chibueze scored seven goals this season in the First Division League, while scoring a brace against Senglea was one the highlights as Mqabba went straight back to the top of the First Division.

His club Mqabba will surely miss him in their quest to win promotion to the Premier League.

The players dream was to play in the Premier League again, hopefully with Mqabba, the side who always stood by him and brought him over to Malta.

There were several other clubs courting the young Mqabba striker as his ball control and change of speed made him one of the best strikers in Malta.

....

23 dies of heart attack.

I know his wife. Just last week she was telling me about his daily regime, how health conscious he is and so on....

incredible

MARSAXLOKK CHAMPIONS FOR THE FIRST TIME
Marsaxlokk - Msida 4-0

Marsaxlokk were effectively declared Premier League Champions on Saturday but two-goals in each half, help them to celebrate their title in style with an emphatic win over Msida to seal a memorable weekend for the Southseasiders.

DANIEL BOGDANOVIC struck two times, including one from the penalty spot to increase his tally to 30 goals.

At first, they had found Msida hard to break down but BOGDANOVIC set them on their way with a brilliant individual goal after 19 minutes. SAMMUT fired home Marsaxlokk's second just before half-time.

Whether by design or default, Msida allowed Marsaxlokk to have plenty of the ball, but initially the Champions were unable to break the Saints down as they packed numbers behind the ball.

Msida had some success in working the ball to Ouesseni Zongo but could offer him no support up front.

BOGDANOVIC was determined to unpick Msida's packed ranks on his own and after 19 minutes, he found some space to fire in a low shot behind Borg.

The Southseasiders almost got a second when Frendo unleashed a fierce shot which Borg finger-tipped into the path of Schembri and he did well again to block the rebound.

Marsaxlokk upped the tempo as they sensed victory and they doubled the lead just before half-timer with a stunning finish from KEVIN SAMMUT.

The former Msida player finished a solo effort with an instinctive right-foot strike that flashed high past Borg.

After the interval, there was little variation from the first-half theme with Msida packing players behind the ball.

But Msida were in no mood to roll over and it needed a superb full-length save from Gauci to deny Zongo after 57 minutes.

Five minutes from time, referee Marco Borg awarded a penalty for Marsaxlokk when Sciriha hauled down Bogdanovic. From the ensuing spot kick, BOGDANOVIC sent Borg the wrong way.

And the southseasiders piled on the agony for Msida when SCHEMBRI fired past Msida keeper from close-range to leave the championship champagne waiting to be uncorked.

MSIDA: O.Borg, S.Grima (78'L.Micallef), P.Sciriha, R.Baldacchino, J.Mifsud, K.Ebejer (90'R.Montebello), P. Fenech, D.Cachia, S.Bajada, A.Farrugia (66'M.Ellul), O.Zongo

MARSAXLOKK: R.Gauci, P.Pullicino, L.Dimech, M.Licari, C.Magro (78'K.Mamo), J.Pace (46'G.Sciberras), K.Sammut, C.Frendo (46' U.Nwoko), D.Bogdanovic, A.Schembri, C.Mamo

Referee: Marco Borg

Malta coach Dušan Fitzel told uefa.com he felt his side "could have won" as they earned a sensational 2-2 draw at home against Turkey in a Group C qualifier.

Brave performance
The islanders led twice through defender Brian Said and Andre Schembri but were twice pegged back by Fatih Terim's side. It was a sensational result but one their ambitious Czech coach thought could have been even better. "Before the match I told my players that if we scored first we would not lose," Fitzel told uefa.com. "I am not happy about the way we conceded both goals - the first just before half-time and then again within a minute of retaking the lead. I firmly believe that we could have won the match had luck been on our side."

Players overjoyed
With a national holiday having helped draw a bumper crowd to the National Stadium in Ta' Qali, Malta produced one of their best international performances to date to pick up their fifth Group C point, following a win against Hungary and a draw in Moldova. "I felt overjoyed as the final whistle blew," Schembri told uefa.com. "I knew we could even have won but that is football. I never like to judge myself on my personal performances - I prefer to leave others to do that - but it was another historic result for Malta."

Positive approach
Fitzel, who signed a new contract with the Malta Football Association last week to keep him in charge of the national team until the end of 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying, went into the game with a positive attitude. "I studied Turkey and their tactics from their recent matches and I knew from the start that they would play the way they did," he explained. "I urged my players to work as a team and do their best to make life difficult for Turkey."

'Different story'
They certainly managed that, as Terim acknowledged, telling uefa.com: "I never thought Malta could score against us. We did not play well today. Two points dropped today means that we now have to win all our remaining matches if we are to qualify. I take responsibility for this result. We lost some important players through injury during the match and this affected our performance. I have no doubt that if we had scored first it would have been a different story."

'Heroic achievment'
"Turkey were regarded as the best team in our group and getting a point against them was a really heroic achievment," Malta captain Gilbert Agius added. "With a little luck on our side, we could easily have won the match. The bumper crowd helped in a very big way. The support drove us yesterday evening. We hope that we can continue where we left off yesterday evening in our next qualifier against Moldova."

BEST 11 OF EACH MALTESE CLUB (2007-2008)

I don´t know how the maltese teams play tactically.
On this thread, we can put the best line-up of each club of the championship:

For example...with FC Barcelona of Spain (my country)

---------------------Valdés----------------------
Zambrotta-------Puyol------Milito----------Abidal
----------------------Touré---------------------
--------------Xavi---------------Iniesta ----------
Messi------------------Henry------------Ronaldinho

or

Valdés Goalkeeper
Zambrotta Right back
Puyol and Milito Central defenders
Abidal left back
Touré Defensive midfielder
Xavi and Iniesta Attacking midfielders
Messi Right winger
Henry Striker
Ronaldinho Left winger

Please, help me with Floriana , Sliema Wanderers , Birkirkara...
