UEFA Nations League/The Road to Euro 2020

The beginning of another qualifying campaign is just around the corner, our first match in the UEFA Nations League is this Friday away to Romania, and then 3 days later a home match against Lithuania. We've come close to qualifying for a major tournament several times, but have always fallen just short. Hopefully Tumbakovic can get the job done this time.

Several big exclusions for the match against Romania, including captain Jovetic, Marusic, Vesovic, Djordjevic and Jankovic. Nikola Vukcevic, who recently made a move to Spanish side Levante, is not totally fit either, but will play. Beciraj is currently without a club, but was called up anyway.

Bata Mirkovic is no longer assistant coach as he took the head coaching job at Partizan. I'm hoping for 4 points from these first 2 games, but it looks unlikely due to all the injuries.

golmani: Danijel Petković (Lorijen, Francuska), Milan Mijatović (Budućnost), Damir Ljuljanović (OFK Titograd);

odbrambeni igrači: Stefan Savić (Atletiko Madrid, Španija), Filip Stojković (Crvena zvezda, Srbija), Adam Marušić (Lacio, Italija), Žarko Tomašević (Ostende, Belgija), Marko Simić (Pahtakor, Uzbekistan), Boris Kopitović (Čukarički, Srbija), Risto Radunović (Astra, Rumunija);

vezni igrači: Marko Janković (Partizan, Srbija), Nikola Vukčević (Levante, Španija), Marko Vešović (Legija Vašrava, Poljska), Aleksandar Šćekić (Partizan, Srbija), Nebojša Kosović (Partizan, Srbija), Mirko Ivanić (BATE Borisov, Bjelorusija), Vukan Savićević (Slovan Bratislava, Slovačka), Vladimir Jovović (Jablonec, Češka), Sead Hakšabanović (Malaga, Španija), Aleksandar Boljević (Vasland Beveren, Belgija), Luka Mirković (Budućnost), Darko Zorić (Čukarički, Srbija), Deni Hočko (Famalikao, Portugal);

napadači: Stevan Jovetić (Monako, Francuska), Fatos Beqiraj (Mehelen, Belgija), Stefan Mugoša (Inčon, Južna Koreja) i Luka Đorđević (Arsenal Tula, Rusija).

Imaju mlade, vrijedne, ambiciozne i talentovane igrače i očekuje nas veoma težak duel u prvom kolu protiv njih, dodao je selektor „sokola“.

Otpao i Marušić!

So, I was definitely wrong in my prediction for the first 2 games, we were able to get 4 points, a 0-0 away draw to Romania and a 2-0 win over Lithuania at home. We're currently sitting on top of the group tied on points with Serbia who we play today in Podgorica. It'll be a weird game for obvious reasons, so I think it'll end up in a draw.

Savic is out, while Vukcevic is hurt but will play and Jovetic has just come back from an injury. Serbia are missing Matic and Kolarov. Man U coach Jose Mourinho will be a special guest at the match today.

Na spisku selektora Tumbakovića nalaze se golmani: Danijel Petković (Lorijen, Francuska), Milan Mijatović(Budućnost), Damir Ljuljanović (OFK Titograd); odbrambeni igrači: Stefan Savić (Atletiko Madrid, Španija), Žarko Tomašević (Ostende, Belgija), Marko Simić (Pahtakor, Uzbekistan), Adam Marušić (Lacio, Italija), Filip Stojković (Crvena zvezda, Srbija), Emrah Klimenta (Sakramento, SAD), Boris Kopitović (Čukarički, Srbija), Risto Radunović (Astra, Rumunija); vezisti: Nikola Vukčević (Levante, Španija), Marko Vešović (Legija Varšava, Poljska), Vladimir Jovović (Jablonec, Češka), Aleksandar Šćekić (Partizan, Srbija), Marko Janković (Partizan, Srbija), Mirko Ivanić (BATE Borisov, Bjelorusija), Nebojša Kosović (Partizan, Srbija), Aleksandar Boljević(Vasland Beveren, Belgija), Darko Zorić (Čukarički, Srbija), Luka Mirković (Budućnost), Asmir Kajević (Čukarički, Srbija), Deni Hočko (Famalikao, Portugal); napadači: Fatos Bećiraj (Makabi Netanja, Izrael), Stevan Jovetić(Monako, Francuska), Stefan Mugoša (Inčon junajted, Republika Korea) i Luka Đorđević (Arsenal Tula, Rusija).

I mi i oni.

I mi i oni.

To radimo uvijek, nema posebnih detalja, a imamo dodatni motiv.

Srbija bez Matića i Kolarova

“Mnogo sam volio fudbal i uživao sam u njemu.

Damjanović: Crna Gora i Srbija bratske države

Savo Milošević za Vijesti: Crna Gora me vratila fudbalu

Zahvalan sam crnogorskom savezu jer me vratio u fudbalsku priču”, kaže Milošević

On to zaista jeste u svakom smislu - i pedagoški, i stručno, i ljudski.

Kakvu atmosferu očekujete u Podgorici i narednog mjeseca u Beogradu?

“Pravu sportsku.

Our qualifying group for Euro 2020 was revealed recently and it includes England, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Kosovo. The group reminds of our qualifying group for Euro 2012, which was also a five team group that included England and Bulgaria and of course we later faced the Czechs in the playoffs.

I think we have more than a good chance of finishing in 2nd place so long as the backbone of our team i.e Jovetic, Savic and Vukcevic can stay healthy.

I plan on going attending the away match in Prague early June.

The squad list for our first 2 qualifiers for Euro 2020, away to Bulgaria and home to England. Jovetic and Savic are big doubts, a huge handicap for us, but I'm still confident we can get something from both games if we play at our maximum level.

Za mjesto u timu našeg najboljeg tima konkurisaće 28 igrača: golmani: Danijel Petković (Lorijen, Francuska), Milan Mijatović (Budućnost), Damir Ljuljanović (OFK Titograd); odbrambeni igrači: Stefan Savić (Atletiko Madrid, Španija), Marko Simić (Pahtakor, Uzbekistan), Žarko Tomašević (Ostende, Belgija), Adam Marušić (Lacio, Italija), Filip Stojković (Crvena zvezda, Srbija), Boris Kopitović (Čukarički, Srbija), Risto Radunović (Astra, Rumunija), Igor Vujačić (Zeta); vezni igrači: Vukčević Nikola (Levante, Španija), Marko Vešović (Legija Varšava, Poljska), Vladimir Jovović (Jablonec, Češka), Aleksandar Šćekić (Partizan, Srbija), Marko Janković (SPAL, Italija), Mirko Ivanić (Crvena zvezda, Srbija), Nebojša Kosović (Partizan, Srbija), Marko Bakić (Muskron, Belgija), Aleksandar Boljević (Vasland Beveren, Belgija), Luka Mirković (Budućnost), Stefan Lončar (Istra, Hrvatska), Asmir Kajević (Čukarički, Srbija), Deni Hočko (Famalikao, Portugal); napadači: Fatos Bećiraj (Makabi Netanja, Izrael), Stevan Jovetić (Monako, Francuska), Stefan Mugoša (Inčon junajted, Južna Koreja) i Luka Đorđević (Arsenal Tula, Rusija).

Some highlights of the previous times we met with Bulgaria and England. Definitely some memorable moments against England, especially that goal by Delibasic.

1-1 the final result away to Bulgaria. Could not have asked for a better performance prior to the dubious penalty call made by the French thief refereeing the game. The last few minutes were shaky due to the complexion of the game being completely altered by that horrendous call.

And a reminder, we were playing without both Jovetic and Savic. I don't know if either of them will be ready for the English on Monday night, but I expect an absolute dogfight in Podgorica.

Bulgaria 1-1 Montenegro: Stefan Mugosa strikes as visitors send out a warning to England ahead of Euro 2020 qualifying clash

The minnows of Montenegro sent out a warning to Gareth Southgate’s England on Friday night by beginning their Euro 2020 campaign with a creditable draw in Sofia.

Stefan Mugosa scored a classic opening goal after 50 minutes to give his nation of only 600,000 people a huge lift ahead of England’s visit to Podgorica on Monday, even though the hosts levelled late on through Todor Nedelev’s controversial penalty.

Southgate will note with admiration how Mugosa, of Moldovan club side Sheriff Tiraspol, turned two Bulgarian defenders inside the penalty area before planting a composed low finish into the bottom right-hand corner.

Nedelev netted a controversial penalty to ensure Bulgaria took a point from the game

Bulgaria rescued a point after 82 minutes following a foul just outside the box by Vladimir Jovovic on Stanislav Kostov, which was given as a spot kick.

It was a night where The Brave Falcons, as Montenegro’s team are known, lived up their nickname.

Without their two best-known players, former Manchester City pair Stefan Jovetic and Stefan Savic, due to injury, the visitors showed plenty of defensive resilience before taking the lead.

Levante midfielder Nikola Vukcevic fed a key pass into Mugosa and after his exemplary strike, the goalscorer sprinted away to celebrate with the small band of travelling supporters who braved the 700-mile round trip.

Montenegro, No46 in the Fifa rankings, have held England in three of their four previous encounters and won’t roll over easily next week.

Bulgaria had the lion’s share of opportunities before half-time but couldn’t breach a determined rearguard that fought for everything.

Montenegro goalkeeper Danijel Petkovic, who plays in the French second division for Lorient, clawed away a free-kick by Nedelev while Marko Vesovic was in the right place to boot away a header by Vasil Bozhikov off the line.

At the other end, Mirko Ivanic was denied one-on-one by Bulgaria goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov - son of wig-wearing 1994 World Cup hero Boris.

Bulgaria haven’t been to a major finals since Euro 2004 and a sparse crowd underlined their recent travails.

But their second-half pressure entitled them to an equaliser and both countries will fancy grabbing one of the two qualifying places from Group A that also includes England, Czech Republic and Kosovo.

Indeed, Bulgaria might have snatched a comeback win in injury-time when 17-year-old substitute Martin Minchev flashed a shot inches past the far post on his international debut.

Montenegro will now hope for better injury news ahead of their date with England. Jovetic has already withdrawn from the squad but Atletico Madrid centre-half Savic, who won a Premier League title under Roberto Mancini in 2012, will make a last-ditch attempt to face Southgate’s men by testing his hamstring injury over the weekend.

He watched Friday night’s draw from the VIP section of the Vasil Levski stadium but now plans to resume training with his team-mates back in their capital.

Bulgaria missed their prized asset Kiril Despodov of Cagliari with injury and lacked cutting edge without him.

The home side, who had Accrington Stanley goalkeeper Dimitar Evtimov on the bench, enjoyed 57% possession and made 10 attempts on Montenegro’s goal.

Tomorrow is the big fixture against England. Jovetic won't be available, but Savic most likely will. Eric Dier is out for England.

England promised 'hellish' welcome when they take on Montenegro six years after Joe Hart was pelted with missiles in World Cup qualifying clash

Montenegro's notorious 'ultra' fans are threatening a 'hellish' welcome for England in Monday's Euro 2020 qualifier.

The warning comes six years after goalkeeper Joe Hart was hit by an array of missiles and Ashley Cole was spat at when the two countries last met in Podgorica.

The World Cup qualifier in 2013 also saw violent clashes among fans and one English supporter left with a bloody head wound.

Steven Gerrard was also pelted and Ashley Cole was spat at when the two countries last met

Two years earlier Montenegro were fined Ł30,000 following a pitch invasion when a fixture between the two teams ended in 2-2 draw.

Now a group called Crnogorska Navijacka Scena (CNS) has posted a warning ahead of next week's game on their Instagram page, the 'Official Account of Montenegrin Ultras'.

It said: 'We welcome the Englishmen in Podgorica, we expect a hellish atmosphere, as well as every time they come. Just win! Only Montenegro! Everyone!'

The CNS social media site regularly posts images of hooliganism from around the world.

Attacks by Montenegro fans have included a seat being thrown at the Poland goalkeeper in 2012, and in 2015 the Russia keeper was struck on the back of the head with a flare, forcing the Euro 2016 qualifier to be abandoned.

The World Cup qualifier in 2013 saw flares and smoke bombs set off and clashes among fans

Smoke billows out across the stadium in the Montenegrin capital during a game in 2013

In 2017, three Red Star Belgrade fans were badly beaten up at the train station in Podgorica. Passengers claimed that Montenegrin fans were waiting for them armed with sticks and baseball bats, launching their attack on the command of a masked fan.

Enhanced security around next week's match means that all England tickets need to be printed with members' names, and only fans with a valid match ticket with their name on it will be allowed into the stadium. Of 2,700 fans who have registered for tickets, just 650 have been allocated by ballot.

A heavy police presence is expected, amid fears that fans could also be sucked into anti-government protests due just as the England fans arrive in Podgorica on Saturday.

Last weekend's rally saw protestors with whistles and sirens chanting 'Milo thief'. It is the fifth such rally in two months to demand the resignation of President Milo Djukanovic and his government over claims of abuse of office, corruption and cronyism.

Attacks by Montenegro fans have been a regular feature in games during recent years

Djukanovic has ruled the country for over three decades, refusing to relinquish his grip on power despite international pressure.

This month a businessman, who accused the president of corruption, was forced to flee to London, saying he feared for his safety.

Dusko Knezevic, owner of Atlas Bank, has since claimed that he is being followed on the streets of London and intimidated by criminal gangs.

An FA spokesperson said: 'As is the case with all international fixtures, The FA will continue to work closely with UEFA and relevant authorities in the host country.'

England must contend with harsh memories when facing Montenegro

Gareth Southgate’s team should be ready for hostility in their European Championship Qualifying match at Gradski Stadion where Wayne Rooney was sent off in 2011

Gradski Stadion is one of Europe’s less accommodating venues for international football. Only around 15,000 will cram into Montenegro’s home ground to see if England can be overcome on Monday but they will make the noise of a crowd double the size.

The stands at either end are concrete, compact and severe, hemmed close to the bylines in a manner reminiscent of Loftus Road. The home fans have a reputation for pushing the boundaries and England have found their limits tested in previous visits.

Only Kyle Walker remains from the squad who travelled in 2013 and returned bruised by a late equaliser from Dejan Damjanovic. That was low-key fare compared with what passed 17 months previously on a night that brought Montenegro as close to success as they have been since being granted Uefa membership in January 2007.

On a chaotic evening that had started serenely England lost their way. Ashley Young and Darren Bent seemed to have put them in an impregnable position but then Elsad Zverotic pulled one back, Wayne Rooney lost his head and was sent off and Andrija Delibasic sparked a pitch invasion by levelling in stoppage time. The point took England to Euro 2012 anyway; it gave Montenegro a play-off spot, too, but they still await qualification for a major finals and will need to upset the odds again.

“Things that happen in the past are just nice results for Montenegro,” said their manager, the veteran former Partizan Belgrade coach Ljubisa Tumbakovic. His side began their qualifying campaign respectably on Friday in Sofia, ending up unfortunate to draw 1-1 with Bulgaria when their hosts were awarded an 82nd-minute penalty for a challenge Vladimir Jovovic appeared to have made outside the area. “When you concede a goal after the referee’s mistake it’s hard not to comment on it,” said the midfielder Marko Jankovic. Tumbakovic admitted they had “lost two points” but also said their priority had been to depart unbeaten.

That aim having been achieved, an inconsistent Montenegro can legitimately sense an opportunity. Group A of the Euro 2020 qualifiers has a curious feel; England are overwhelming favourites but an argument could be made for any of the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Kosovo and Tumbakovic’s team making second place. All fall into the “banana skin” category and, while results against England may not be decisive, any major improvement on Czech Republic’s hammering at Wembley should breed optimism.

“I’m really trying but I can’t,” Tumbakovic said when asked if he could pinpoint a weakness in the England party. “We in the coaching team are realistic.” But he will be aware England have floundered before in Gradski Stadion. Montenegro have few recognisable names, especially with Stevan Jovetic sidelined, but Tumbakovic suggested Stefan Savic – the Atlético Madrid centre-back and, like Jovetic, once of Manchester City – is winning his battle against the injury that kept him out of Friday’s game.

Montenegro also have a striker on form. Stefan Mugosa scored a beautifully taken goal against Bulgaria, adding to three Nations League strikes last autumn. A hot prospect in his early 20s, Mugosa did not make the grade at Kaiserslautern and 1860 Munich but averages better than a goal every other game for Incheon United, his team in South Korea. “It’s a special feeling for me to play and score goals for the national team,” Mugosa said. At 27 he may now be fulfilling his potential and should partner the tricky Fatos Beciraj, a veteran of that historic match in 2011, up front.

This is a workmanlike side in the main and England can improve on previous outcomes if they master the heat from behind the goalmouths. Montenegro were fined for their fans’ celebrations after the comeback from two down and Joe Hart was among those targeted with missiles on England’s next visit, with brawls also breaking out between home supporters.

“The history of our duels tells us we can compete,” Jankovic said of the on-pitch skirmishes. Montenegro are rarely rolled over and, as a minimum, England must expect another fight.

'I'm really trying but I can't': Montenegro coach struggling to find weakness in England team ahead of Euro 2020 qualifier

Montenegro, with a population little bigger than Newcastle’s, have a habit of punching above their weight when England visit. Yet, *despite sucker-punch draws at the Gradski Stadion in 2011 and 2013, their head coach has given his side little hope on Monday night.

Montenegro, who joined Uefa only in 2007, were on a four-match losing streak before their draw in Bulgaria on Friday and Ljubisa Tumbakovic said on Sunday that his side could not spot a weakness in Gareth Southgate’s in-form side.

“I’m really trying, but I can’t,” he said. “We in the coaching team are realistic. Things that happen in the past are just nice results for Montenegro, tomorrow we will play a match with totally different players, new coaches, with different *capabilities and different ideas from both teams.”

Montenegro has a population of just over 600,000 and is the smallest of the former Yugoslavian states. Its football team are proud to have lost only once against England since 2006. However, last year was a season to forget.

Hopes of 2018 World Cup qualification had been dashed after defeats in their final two fixtures, against Denmark and Poland. The Nations League campaign was disappointing, too, as they won just two of six matches.

There would be a further blow ahead of the Bulgaria match as star forward and captain Stevan Jovetic, formerly of Manchester City, *withdrew due to a knee injury.

While Czech Republic forward Matej Vydra suggested Leicester City defender Harry Maguire might have been a “weak link” ahead of England’s 5-0 triumph at Wembley on Friday, Tumbakovic disagreed. The head coach said his team would have to improve on their 1-1 draw with Bulgaria to get anything out of England.

“The start of the qualifiers, the first game, brings its own importance, its own responsibilities,” he said. “There were special nerves in the players from both teams, that is why there was a lack of quality that would have made that game more beautiful than it was.

“Our performance in the second half was a lot better, but still far away from the quality of football Montenegro can show. That is why I believe this second game will be at a higher level than the first – the model and the way England play is something special.”

England have not played Montenegro since qualification for the 2014 World Cup, when they won 4-1 at Wembley. This time, Southgate has warned of an “intense” atmosphere and he can be assured of no shortage of noise from a raucous 15,000 crowd. Six years ago, goalkeeper Joe Hart was hit by a missile from the stands, while Ashley Cole was spat at.

Tumbakovic has been in charge since January 2016, having won silverware with Shandong Luneng, where he lifted two Chinese Super League titles in between spells in Saudi Arabia and Iran. He is trying to rebuild Montenegro with younger talent. However, the tiny pool is perhaps exposed most by their goalkeeper, Danijel Petkovic, who has been on the bench for French second division club Lorient since the turn of the year.

Many of the players who forced three draws against England this decade are now retired, including the former Roma favourite Mirko Vucinic. Dejan Damjanovic, the last Montenegrin to score against England, is 37 and winding down his career in South Korea.

Security fears for England's European Qualifier in Montenegro

Southgate said: "We always encourage fans to get tickets through official channels because it makes it more difficult for us to help"

There are security concerns for England's European Qualifier in Montenegro with travelling fans buying tickets for the home end, Sky Sports News has learned.

Gareth Southgate's team are in action again on Monday night after they kicked off their qualification campaign with a 5-0 win over the Czech Republic at Wembley on Friday.

However, there are worries over fan trouble with some Montenegro fans selling their tickets to England supporters.

Tickets with a face value of €10 are being sold for €40.

That has led to security concerns at the tiny Gradski Stadium. The last time England played there six years ago, goalkeeper Joe Hart was targeted with missiles and flares from the crowd and defender Ashley Cole was spat at.

The Football Supporters Federation has told SSN they think an extra 300 England fans will be in Podgorica without tickets, on top of the 600 England supporters with official tickets in the away end.

There are concerns that some England fans may try to buy tickets in the North Stand, where Montenegro's Ultras are housed.

It is understood some England fans have already bought tickets in the less volatile South Stand via official channels.

They applied through the Montenegrin FA, were asked for their UK passport details, and were still sold tickets.

Speaking in Sunday evening's pre-match press conference, England's head coach was asked if he was concerned with the situation.

"We've done the best we can to make sure our official tickets have gone to England's travelling members," Southgate said.

"We would always encourage fans to get tickets through official channels because it makes it more difficult for us to help them."

Regarding the prospect of the team coping in such a hostile environment, Southgate added: "We are guests are so we are being very respectful but our players always have to be prepared.

"We always prepare players for everything. Most important is we are preparing tactically and making sure our performance levels are high."

A security meeting is due to take place on Sunday evening where the Montenegrin FA and local police will decide their policy on away supporters trying to get into the home stands.

The Football Supprters Trust is advising any England fans attending the game outside of the designated away seats to avoid wearing England shirts.

The FA's policy has always been to try to dissuade any England fans without tickets from travelling to away matches, and certainly not to buy tickets in the home stands.

5-1 the final score. Disappointing performance to say the least, but it is what it is. Missing Jovetic is always a huge blow for us and having an unfit Savic didn't help ether, who undoubtedly had his worst performance for the NT. Many of our other players are not even playing for their respective club teams, so to expect them to just turn it on against one of the best sides in the world atm, was a big ask.

The next two qualifiers are crucial, home to Kosovo and away to the Czech Republic. The English FA are now complaining about racist abuse from our fans against some of their black players, so let's see if they're will be any fines/penalties. Personally I think Southgate and co. should just mind their own business.

Beautiful goal by Vesovic, btw

Odjednom reaguju, nevjerovatnu brzinu i promjenu smjera pokažu.

Nismo bili u optimalnom stanju pred ovako važne utakmice.

https://www.vijesti.me/sport/fudbal/...primljena-gola

England to report racist abuse of players in Montenegro

Raheem Sterling and Callum Hudson-Odoi condemned the "unacceptable" racist abuse of England players during their 5-1 win in Montenegro.

Racist chanting was directed at a number of England players, including Danny Rose, during the Euro 2020 qualifier in Podgorica.

Manager Gareth Southgate said the incidents will be reported to Uefa.

"It is unacceptable," Southgate told BBC 5 Live. "I definitely heard abuse of Danny Rose when he got booked."

He added: "There's no doubt in my mind it happened. I know what I heard. We have to make sure our players feel supported, they know the dressing room is there and we as a group of staff are there for them.

"We have to report it through the correct channels. It is clear that so many people have heard it and we have to continue to make strides in our country and trust the authorities to take the right action."

What happened?

After only six minutes, BBC Radio 5 Live commentator Ian Dennis said he heard racist chants when Tottenham left-back Rose was in possession. BBC football correspondent John Murray also said he heard the chanting throughout the game and spoke to pitch-side photographers who described the abuse the England players received as "disgusting".

Sterling scored England's fifth goal in the 81st minute and celebrated by putting his hands to his ears, a gesture he later said was a response to the racist abuse.

In injury time Rose was booked following a strong challenge on Aleksandar Boljevic, with more racist chants aimed at the 28-year-old.

It is not the first time Rose has faced this situation on international duty.

He was racially abused in Serbia in an under-21 game in 2012.Serbia's FA were fined Ł65,000, with their under-21s having to play a game behind closed doors.
Sterling calls for a 'real punishment'

Sterling called on football's authorities to take "a proper stance" and crack down on the racist abuse.

"A couple of idiots ruined a great night and it is a real sad thing to hear," Sterling told BBC Radio 5 Live. "It's a real sad situation we are talking about after a great win.

"I don't think it was just one or two people that heard it, it was the whole bench. There should be a real punishment for this, not just the two or three people who were doing it - it needs to be a collective thing.

"This place holds 15,000. The punishment should be, whatever nation it is, if your fans are chanting racist abuse then it should be the whole stadium so no-one can come and watch.

"When the ban is lifted, the fans will think twice. They all love football, they all want to come and watch their nation so it will make them think twice before doing something silly like that."

Describing his reaction to his goal, Sterling added: "It was one of those where it was to let them know, you are going to need to tell me more than that we are black and what we resemble to affect us.

"That was the message and give them something to talk about.

"We can only bring awareness and light to the situation. It's time for the people in charge to put a real stamp on it.

"In England we have a diverse country and lots of different faces. I can only do so much; the FA can only do so much. The people in charge need to make a proper stance."
I heard fans making monkey noises - Hudson-Odoi

Chelsea winger Hudson-Odoi, 18, who was making his first international start, told BeIn Sports: "I don't think discrimination should be anywhere - we are equal.

"When you are hearing stuff like that from the fans, it is not right and it is unacceptable. Hopefully Uefa deal with it properly. When me and Rosey went over there, they were saying, 'ooh aa aa' monkey stuff and we just have to keep our heads and keep a strong mentality.

"Hopefully Rosey is OK too. We will discuss it and have a chat. He has a strong mentality and is a strong guy so hopefully everything will be good.

"It is not right at all - I was enjoying the game too. We just have to take the win and go back home."

England's Declan Rice, who was also making his first Three Lions start, was sitting next to Rose in the dressing room after the game and said the incidents affected everyone in the camp.

"It is clearly unacceptable and it is up to the FA and Uefa to deal with it," said Rice. "It is not right, we came here to play a football match, we have been respectful and they need to show respect to us.

"Danny was disappointed. We talk all the time about kicking it out of the game but when is it actually going to stop? It is happening all the time and there needs to be more punished for it.

"We need to be doing more. I don't know what else we can do, there are so many campaigns saying 'kick it out' but then you come to places like this and it happens again, you are back to the start."
'A blight on football and society' - analysis

BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty

England's outstanding win in Montenegro should be a cause for celebration - instead it was overshadowed by the shameful racist abuse aimed at Southgate's players.

Those close to the pitch in Podgorica delivered grim reports of what was being suffered by players in what is unquestionably an unforgiving, hostile and unpleasant arena.

Sterling's cupped ear response towards the Montenegro fans after scoring was revealing. It was clearly a pointed response to what he had been hearing on the terraces in this small arena.

It brought a furious response, with more chants and an object being thrown on to the pitch which was retrieved by Hudson-Odoi.

The most audible chanting came late on when Rose was booked for a late challenge and monkey noises could be heard from the press box situated in among the Montenegro supporters.

It was disgraceful, unacceptable and provided a sour backdrop and unsavoury conclusion to what should have been, when viewed in the football context, a highly satisfactory night for Southgate and England after recording back-to-back five-goal victories for the first time in more than 30 years.

Now is the time for Uefa to come up with the punishment that fits the crime, not simply heavy fines but threats of exclusion from tournaments.

This should have been solely about another outstanding England win - instead a light must also be shone on the dreadful undercurrent of racist abuse that still comes out and puts a blight on football and society.
'Uefa must take strong and swift action' - what other people said

Sports Minister Mims Davies: "Rightly very proud of the England players tonight - a fantastic effort and cracking result - in face of absolutely unacceptable racist abuse. Uefa must quickly investigate then take strong and swift action."

Former England striker Ian Wright, speaking to ITV: "It will probably go to Uefa and they'll be fined a pittance and we'll get the same thing again here the next time or somewhere else in Europe. It's not going to stop them."

Former England midfielder Joe Cole, also on ITV: "We need to shine a light on it. As a nation we need to take a lead on it. It's out of order and England players shouldn't have to deal with it."

Former England defender Danny Mills on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Raheem Sterling has taken a lot of stick from the crowd so why can't he celebrate like that? One week we want players to show passion and emotion and the next we are criticising their reaction when they are getting abused all game."
