Montenegro in 2007 Kirin cup

International future
Montenegro will hope to show similar spirit in their next internationals, as they take on hosts Japan and Colombia at the Kirin Cup in early June. Future assignments were also on midfielder Simon Vukčević's mind as he savoured the joy of this first success. "This was a unique experience," he said. "Our fans lifted us to victory. They were great. We showed we have potential but it is very important to get experience. This is just the beginning. We will play lots of friendlies before 2010 [FIFA] World Cup qualifying. We are heading in the right direction."

I would be content if we managed to make those games draw.

If we win even one of those games, I'd say we are legit.

I can see you beating Colombia as they are still not that great or the team they once were back in the 90's. Wish you good luck in this Cup.

I think CG can beat em both, with such a great attack/mid
and a great GK.

The stretegy should not be to stay back but to attack as much as possible.

Colombia won't be taking thus tournament seriously anyway, they will be playing in the Copa America which starts late June. Unless they will use this as a preparation for that, but doubt it

I am most worried about our defence, but I hope Basa will strengthen it a lot.

they will be ok it just takes time for the players to get to know each other, and the thing is they need to play a while together

Kirin Cup 2007: Official Thread

As you may know (or not know), the Kirin Cup is taking place in just over 2 weeks in Japan, and Montenegro is in it. Their opponents are:

June 1:

Japan (host nation)
FIFA Rank: 44
Location: Shizuoka Stadium, Fukuroi

June 3:

Columbia
FIFA Rank: 26
Location: Matsumoto Stadium, Matsumoto

The final match takes place on June 5 with Japan playing Columbia at Saitama Stadium, Saitama. The country with the most points after 2 games takes the Kirin Cup and a cash prize of $100,000 US. The runner-up takes home $50,000 US, and the third-place team takes home $10,000 US.

I believe that the Kirin Cup will be a measuring stick of how well this team could do in World Cup qualifications or even in the World Cup, even though that this is a friendly tournament. Both Japan and Columbia have great teams, so this will be the toughest task thus far for our young national team.

Coach Zoran Filipovic has named the players who will participate at the Kirin Cup. They are:

Goalkeepers: Vukašin Poleksić (FC Tatabánya), Mladen Božović (FK Budućnost)

Defenders: Vlado Jeknić (SV Wacker Burghausen), Savo Pavićević (FK Hajduk Kula), Jovan Tanasijević (FC Dinamo Moskva), Radoslav Batak (Ankaraspor AS), Risto Lakić (FK Budućnost), Milan Jovanović (AFC Unirea), Luka Pejović (FK Grbalj)

Midfielders: Branko Bošković (SK Rapid Wien), Vladimir Vujović (Al-Wehba), Vladimir Božović (OFK Beograd), Mirko Raicević (FK Budućnost), Janko Tumbasević (FK Zeta), Nikola Vujović (FK Budućnost), Djordije Cetkovic (FC Hansa Rostock)

Forwards: Mirko Vučinić (AS Roma), Milan Purović (FK Crvena Zvezda), Igor Burzanović (FK Crvena Zvezda), Srdjan Radonjić (Odense BK)

Notable absences: MF Simon Vukcevic (no team), FW Stevan Jovetic (FK Partizan)

I thought Jovetic and Vukcevic both played relatively well vs. Hungary, but I am guessing that Filipovic is going for players with relatively more playing experience, as both Jovetic and Vukcevic are fairly young players.

Let's hope for the best and hope Crna Gora can come away with their first trophy!

Ah, ok. That makes sense then.

The U-21 team needs Jovetic and perhaps Vukcevic right now more than the main team does.

The game ended with 2-0 for Japan. I knew that our defence would be the worst part of our team and it was true. Sides were not covered enough, defenders were jumping quite bad, Japan scored both goals from heading...
Too bad Burzanovic missed the penalty in second half; if he had scored, maybe we could have made it draw.

It's a shame that we lost.

However, Ivica Osim said a decent comment about us:

"Montenegro seemed to be hampered by their strong desire to win but they can play more efficiently and grow by gaining more experience from playing more games."

Coach Filipovic thought we didn't play too bad either and we didn't even have Vucinic.
