Morelia to face Fire in Champions Cup

Morelia pulled out a 1-1 draw against Costa Rican power Saprissa on Wednesday night and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the FC Champions Cup.

Morelia will meet Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire in a series with dates to be determined.

Heading into Wednedsay's match, Morelia had a comfortable 2-0 lead on aggregate. Only a loss by two or more goals would keep the Mexicans from advancing. Early on, it looked like Saprissa's run was over. Morelia, who played with a roster full of reserves, did not give up a goal in nearly the entire first half.

However, Saprissa were awarded a penalty kick in the 38th minute and Jeaustin Campos slotted it home to give the Ticos a 1-0 lead.

Saprissa turned the pressure on high at the start of the second half. Tensions mounted as the Costa Ricans looked for the elusive goal while the Mexicans tried to keep Saprissa from scoring again.

Morelia gained control of the match and the series in the 78th minute, though, as Antonio Gonzalez knocked a rebound past Saprissa keeper Erick Lonnis.

In the 83rd minute, Morelia's Roberto Hernandez was sent off for a second booking but it was too late for Saprissa.

I go with Pachuca though they have not been playing that well lately. Chicago also is a strong candidate, Morelia is fielding a B team only for this tournament.

Pachuca takes massive lead after first-leg victory against San Jose

18.04.02 -

Pachuca CF took a huge lead in their FC Champions Cup quarterfinal series, defeating San Jose Earthquakes 3:0 in the first leg at home on Wednesday.
Pachuca took an early lead, then grabbed a vital goal late, in the match before some 15,000 fans at the Estadio Hidalgo.

Marco Garces put the home side after just 10 minutes, when his free kick from a tight angle on the left touchline found its way through the packed goalmouth and sailed untouched inside the far post.

The tuzos doubled their lead just after the halftime break through Sergio Santana. Juan Arango corralled a loose ball near the left corner flag and quickly sent a pinpoint cross into the goalmouth, where Santana nodded home past 'keeper Joe Cannon from close range.

San Jose nearly pulled a goal back midway through the half when a cross from Dwayne DeRosario put one-time Mexican league goalscoring champion Ariel Graziani in alone. But his chip over the 'keeper went just wide.

The teams were reduced to 10 men in the 70th minute as Ronnie Ekelund of San Jose and Pachuca's Alfonso Sosa were both sent off. Following a tough foul on Ekelund by Sosa, the two players got into a shoving match, and Honduran referee Argelio Sabillon wasted no time in immediately showing red.

Arango put the contest out of reach nine minutes from time, hitting an angled shot inside the far post from the left corner of the area.

LD Alajuelense defeats Comunicaciones in 3:2 first-leg thriller

Despite missing eight regulars on national team duty, LD Alajuelense defeated CSD Comunicaciones 3:2 at Estadio Mateo Flores in Guatemala City on Sunday to take a huge advantage in their FC Champions Cup quarterfinal series.
Sandro Alfaro's goal four minutes from time gave the visitors the victory in a thrilling contest, with the return match set for 24 April in Costa Rica.

The match was always set to be a tactical battle with the absences, and Jose Luis Pinto set out his side in a conservative, yet effective, tactical scheme with Luis Diego Arnaez serving as a deep holding midfielder, almost a fifth defender in front of the back four. Comunicaciones technical director Carlos Miloc meanwhile came out looking for goals with a back three and wingbacks with full licence to go forward - though LDA exposed the flanks for all three goals.

Comunicaciones started the brighter, and created two good opportunities inside of the first 15 minutes. Milton Nuñez saw his chance just tipped away by Alajuelense custodian Ricardo Gonzalez, before a clear header from Edwin Westphal was directed right at the 'keeper.

The early pressure paid off on 32 minutes, when a cross from Jorge Rodas found a completely unmarked Fredy Thompson in the goalmouth and he headed home from close range.

But barely had the celebration died down in the stands than Erick Jimenez equalized eight minutes from the break. He collected a pass from the opposite flank in the right side of the area and sent it back across goal past Comunicaciones 'keeper Dany Ortiz.

The game began to lose some spark in the second half before substitute Roy Myrie turned the affair. He beat a pair of tackles on the flank and whipped in a cross where Jimenez pounded the ball off the inside of the post for his second of the day.

With Comunicaciones now forced to desperately chase the equalizer at home, it came from a freekick when Nuñez played a pinpoint pass quickly to Fredy Garcia inside the area, who found the back of the net with a left-footed blast.

After Nuñez saw his potential game-winner rebound off the crossbar, the visitors were left with one more answer. Another young substitute, Warren Granados, again escaped on the flank to put in a quality cross, Sandro Alfaro heading home to give LDA a tremendous advantage in returning home for the second leg.

Alajuelense Oust Comunicaciones

04/25/2002.

Costa Rican power LD Alajuelense cruised into the semifinals of the Football Confederation Champions' Cup with a 3-0 home win over CSD Comunicaciones.

Alajuelense take the quarterfinal series 6-2 on aggregate after winning 3-2 in Guatemala with essentially a second team in the first leg.

With its top players back, Alajuelense were never threatened against the reeling Guatemalan club.

Second in their domestic league, fan unrest and a recent spate of poor results may mean the end for Comunicaciones coach Carlos Miloc.

Semifinals Await Wizards

04/25/2002.

Kansas City Wizards shut down Santos Laguna at Arrowhead Stadium Wednesday night scoring two goals and coming up with big saves. The 2-0 win advances the Wizards to semifinal rounds where they will play the winner of the CA Monarcas Morelia v. Chicago Fire pairing.

Santos tested Tony Meola (GK) early in the first half, but Kansas City buried the first goal deep in Santos' net by the 33rd minute. Santos' goalkeeper, Tomas Adriano, was given the opportunity for a different outcome, but unfortunately deflected a Roy Lassister (F) header back to a patient Carey Talley. Talley's header past Adriano was merciless.

Chris Brown came up with the game-winning goal in the 71st minute. Brown, mingling in the penalty area, chest trapped a Preki corner kick and tucked the ball just inside the left post. Wizards' second-half defense secured the quarterfinal win with numerous deflections of close-in strikes by Santos' Mauricio Gallaga, Julio Colman, and Ernesto Contreras. Meola reinforced, once again, why he was chosen by Bruce Arena, USA National Team Head Coach, as one of the 23 men representing the U.S. at the 2002 World Cup.

The BIGGEST surprise this Cup so far for me.....I was counting on Santos to win it all !!!!! Good job Wizzards !!!!

Semifinals.....

With no SET date for Semifinals , ( One Contender undecided yet) and the deadline of August 8th .. Its my wise idea nothing will happen to this Cup..till after the World Cup ...
So it all goes into a dormant state until sometime in July or even August.
