Tecos remain winless; Santos, Pachuca roll

4 March 2002 (www.TEAMtalk.com) -

With 10 rounds all but complete, there is still one winless Mexican club. That dubious distinction falls on squarely on the shoulders of Tecos.

The Guadalajara club, however, managed a draw while fellow relegation-bound sides Leon and Celaya could do nothing to stop their opponents from scoring goals.

Pachuca 2 Leon 1

Pachuca showed the resiliency of a champion on Sunday, overcoming a surprising Leon side to win in the final minutes of the match. Pachuca's Hugo Brizuela scored six minutes from time as the defending champions beat Leon at Estadio Hidalgo. The victory gives Pachuca 17 points on the season, two behind leaders La Piedad and one behind Toluca.

Pachuca opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Argentine native Walter Silvani scored off a corner kick. Leon, though, did not quit. At the end of the first half, the visitors from Guanajuato bagged the equalizer. Edson Astivia fired a cross into the area from the left flank, where veteran Misael Espinoza ran onto it, beat two defenders and scored. Pachuca's offense was non-existent in the second half until Brizuela struck. The ever-dangerous Gabriel Caballero sent a cross into the area which Leon keeper Luis Islas failed to handle. Brizuela cleaned up the mess and Pachuca walked away with the victory.

Tecos 1 Chivas 1

Yet again, Tecos had a chance to snatch their first victory of the season and yet again, Tecos botched it. Tecos scored less than a quarter of an hour into the match but could not add any more goals and surrendered a late goal which cost them the victory. Chilean international Reynaldo Navia scored in the 13th minute for the hosts. Chivas, though, snapped into their defensive mode afterward, making it difficult for Tecos to create offense. In the 73rd minute, Ramon Morales scored his fourth goal in the last three matches to give Chivas the equalizer.

Santos 4 Celaya 1

This result was all but inevitable. A high-octane Santos side against a weak, unmotivated Celaya club. Santos received goals from four different players as the Verano 2001 champions routed Celaya. Jared Borgetti opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a penalty kick. Rodrigo Ruiz added a goal two minutes later and Santos were well on their way. Hector Altamirano and Luis Romero added goals in the second half as Santos took a 4-0 lead. Diego Latorre scored Celaya's lone goal in the 72nd minute.
