Round Six saw the final two unbeaten sides in Mexico fall,
as both Atlas and Chivas lost by identical 3-0 scores.
Atlas succumbed to Tigres at Estadio Universitario, while Chivas lost to Toluca at Estadio Jalisco on Sunday.
Tigres 3, Atlas 0. Tigres showed why they were in the Invierno 2001 finals with a convincing performance. Tigres also sent a message to the rest of the league that the club's slow Verano start is not necessarily how Tigres intend to play the rest of the season. Tigres' Jesus Olalde has seemingly rediscovered his scoring prowess, as he bagged his third goal of the season in the 29th minute. Enilton Menezes scored his first goal this season less than one minute later and Tigres cruised to a much-needed victory.
Toluca 3, Chivas 0. Toluca overcame a slow start and fought off a tough Chivas side. Chivas controlled the match early but could not break through Toluca's defence. Manuel Sol nearly scored in the 23rd minute, but his shot was stopped by defender Adrian Garcia Arias. Toluca broke the scoreless draw in the 41st minute, when Carlos Maria Morales finished a cross from Jose Cardozo into an empty net. Chivas had a chance to bag the equalizer but Israel Lopez missed a penalty kick in the 65th minute. Cardozo scored in the 72nd minute, and Rafael Garcia put the match away with a goal in stoppage time.
America 2, La Piedad 1. Thank goodness for Marcelo Lipatin. The Uruguayan hit a double as America fought off a pesky La Piedad squad in Estadio Azteca. Lipatin, who also scored in America's 2-0 victory over Talleres in a Copa Libertadores match, scored a goal on a breakaway and on a header in the first half to provide the only offence America needed. Lipatin has been playing in place in the injured Ivan Zamorano.
Cruz Azul 3, Morelia 1. Sebastian Abreu bagged a double in less than two minutes as Cruz Azul reached the 13-point plateau. They trailed 1-0 in the 48th minute when Abreu came to life. His first goal was set up by Cesareo Victorino. The midfielder fired a shot on goal and the ball deflected off Abreu into the net. Then, less than one minute later, Abreu scored a classic goal. He trapped a shot with his chest and fired a half volley into the net.
Santos 3, Leon 0. Leon should have quit in the fifth minute and spared everybody the trouble of sitting through this lopsided match-up. Denis Caniza scored in the fourth minute and Carlos Gomes added a late double as Santos routed pathetic Leon. Caniza opened the scoring when he knocked in a loose ball past Leon keeper Luis Islas. Santos controlled the entire match as Leon could hardly put together a scoring attack.
Necaxa 3, Tecos 3. Tecos showed why they are struggling against relegation. They held a 3-1 lead in the 65th minute and could not hold on. Reinaldo Navia scored in the 60th minute to put Tecos ahead, 3-1. But Necaxa slowly fought their way back. Victor Ruiz scored in the 68th minute on a free kick to slice the lead in half. Then, Braulio Luna scooped up a rebound in the 72nd minute and bagged the equalizer. Necaxa were without star midfielder Alex Aguinaga, who served a one-match suspension.
Monterrey 1, Celaya 0. Paulo Cesar Chavez scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute as Monterrey escaped with a victory. Celaya were the aggressors in the match as forward Diego Latorre nearly scored on several occasions.
Veracruz 2, Puebla 1. Isaac Terrazas scored just two minutes from time to give Veracruz their first victory in nearly a month. Veracruz spotted Puebla a 1-0 lead when Mexican international Alberto Garcia Aspe scored in the 48th minute. Then, Martin Rodriguez scored the equalizer in the 66th minute, setting up Terrazas' heroics. Terrazas scored on a header in the 88th minute that Puebla keeper Sergio Bernal had no chance of stopping.
Atlante 1, Pumas 1. Atlante scored in the first minute of play, then could not find the net in the subsequent 90-plus minutes and managed just a draw. Juan Angel Paredes knocked in a cross 38 seconds into the match as Atlante scored the quickest goal of the season. Pumas' Rafael Marquez Lugo scored the equalizer in the 60th minute.
