Guatemala vs Ecuador

Tonight at 7:30 PM EST Ecuador and Guatemala will play in Guayaquil. I will post as many news about this match as I can find.

Guatemala is coming from a succesful tour of Cuba where they beat and tied the Cubans. With the exception of Pezarozzi and maybe one or two more players, this is Guatemala's top team.

Ecuador on the other hand will be missing several key players like Delgado, Aguinaga, Kaviedes, De la Cruz, Sanchez, Chala and Hurtado. So "Bolillo Gomez is planning to try out some players that did not play in the WCQ like right back Mercado (Olmedo), Defensive Midfielder Hidalgo (Emelec) who was voted the second best player in the Ecuadorian league and Rookie of the Year Lara (Nacional)

Ecuador to play first friendly against Guatemala
January 9, 2002

GUAYAQUIL (EFE) - The Ecuadorian national team, which recently qualified for its first-ever World Cup, will play a friendly match against Guatemala this weekend.

Ecuadorian players have not seen much action in recent week since the South American qualifiers ended on Nov. 14 and the Ecuadorian league concluded on Dec. 23.

Defender Ivan Hurtado, who plays for Mexican club La Piedad, was the only player from a foreign club called up for Saturday's match.

National team coach Hernan "El Bolillo" Gomez is scheduled to return from vacation in Colombia on Wednesday.

The game has been scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (0030 GMT) Saturday at Guayaquil's 50,000-seat Modelo Stadium.

But Ecuadorians seem to be more concerned about Friday's elections at the Ecuadorian Soccer Federation (FEF), where FEF President Jose Chiriboga will be running for re-election.

Gomez said that he would resign as national team coach if Chiriboga was not re-elected.

Hurtado leads Ecuador past Guatemala

A stunning free kick from Ecuador's Ivan Hurtado gave them a narrow 1-0 win over Guatemala in friendly in Guayaquil on Saturday.

The game was the final friendly for both teams ahead of their preparartion for the Gold Cup which begins next weekend.

Luis Capurro won his 98th cap for Ecuador and will go over 100 in next week's tournament.

Guatemala had two good chances early in the first half, but midfielder Fredy Garcia blasted two free kicks wide of Ecuadorian goalkeeper Jose Cevallos' net.

Ecuador were stymied twice late in the first half when Cristian Lara could not finish a header in the 33rd minute and Carlos Tenorio had his shot stopped with a fine right-hand save from Guatemala goalkeeper Edgar Estrada.

Both teams substituted freely in the second-half, but the 50,000 people had to wait until seven minutes before time for the only goal of the game.

Hurtado lined up 20 yards from the net and curled a searing shot that Estrada could not stop to his left side.

Ecuador will begin their Gold Cup schedule against Haiti on January 20 in Miami while Guatemala faces another World Cup team in Mexico on January 21 in Los Angeles.

Ecuador: José Cevallos; Orfilio Mercado (Maarlon Ayoví, 65), Iván Hurtado, Augusto Porozo, Luis Capurro (Hugo Guerrón, 58), Carlos Hidalgo, Edwin Tenorio (Edison Méndez, 65), Moisés Candelario (Luis Gómez, 65), Cristian Lara; Nicolás Asencio (Juan Carlos Burbano, m.88), Carlos Tenorio. Guatemala: Edgar Estrada; Denis Chen, Gustavo Cabrera, Israel Donis, Alvaro Jiménez; Gonzalo Romero (Ubaldo Pérez, 63), Fabricio Benítez (Claudio Albizuris, 67), Omar Biparal (Freddy Thompson, 51), Freddy García (Walter Estrada, 83); Carlos Plata (Mario Acevedo, 51), Carlos Ruiz.
