2002 FC Champions Cup/Notes

Quakes complete scouting, eye Champions Cup

19 December 2001 www.internetsoccer.com

-- For some teams the holidays mean time off, but San Jose front office is getting back to work early preparing for March’s FC Champions Cup appearance.
The 2001 MLS Cup winners will face a tough test in the first round of the 2002 FC Champions Cup in March against top Honduran club CD Olimpia, who finished as runners-up in last year’s club championship.

The first match will be away at Honduras sometime in early March, with the return leg occurring midway through the month. The players will begin training in late January or early February.

Coach Frank Yallop who has spent the last couple of months scouting for new players, has returned from his trip to the College Cup finals at Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio

Some news from the grapevine San Jose:

The Olimpia home leg is supposedly being moved from Honduras to somewhere in the San Francisco/San Jose area, where the team could make the trip into a vacation, and hopefully to generate more revenue in the US since it is rumoured that the home/first leg may not attract many people.

Venues in San Francisco and maybe San Jose are being discussed, though only the Quakes home leg is to be played March 16 in Sacramento, as noted.

Quakes choose Sacramento for Champions Cup match

03 February 2002 (www.Teamtalk.com) --

The San Jose Earthquakes will debut in the FC Champions Cup against CD Olimpia of Honduras on March 16 in Sacramento.
Last year's MLS Cup champions will host Central American powerhouses Olimpia at Sheldon Florin Community Stadium in Sacramento, California.

In a tough opening game in the Round of 16, the Quakes face the perrenial Honduran power known as the "All Whites", who has won over 20 Honduran league championships, two Football Confederation championships and six Central American titles. Olimpia finished runners-up in the last edition of the FC Champions Cup, losing in the final to the Los Angeles Galaxy (MLS).

The 2002 FC Champions Cup will be a straight knock-out event played in home-and-away format on aggregate goals, and the winner of the competition will earn a berth in the 2003 World Club Championships.

The FC Champions Cup is comprised of four MLS teams, four Mexican teams, two Costa Rican teams, two Guatemalan teams, one Panamanian team, one Honduran team and two teams from Trinidad & Tobago. The rest of the match-ups are listed below.

Should the Quakes reach the quarter-finals, they would face the winner of Pairing 3 (Defence Force FC vs. Pachuca). The quarter-final matches must be completed by May 2, the semi-finals by August 8, and the finals by September 5.

ROUND OF 16 (matches to be played by 24 March 2002)
PAIRING 1: Liga Deportiva Alajuelense (CRC) v Club América (MEX)
PAIRING 2: CSD Comunicaciones (GUA) v D.C. United (USA)
PAIRING 3: Defence Force FC (TRI) v Pachuca (MEX)
PAIRING 4: CD Olimpia (HON) v San Jose Earthquakes (USA)
PAIRING 5: CA Monarcas Morelia (MEX) v Deportivo Saprissa (CRC)
PAIRING 6: CSD Municipal (GUA) v Chicago Fire (USA)

Somehow, no matter how bad DC is they wind up in at least the semi's of this tournament and this year they have a good coach and a pretty good team so they should have a good chance to win this tourney.

America bring B team for Champions Cup opener

12 February 2002 (www.TEAMtalk.com) -

Mexico's Club America kick off their CONCACAF Champions Cup campaign against Costa Rica's Alajuelense on Wednesday but will not bring a full-strength team to the game.

America are playing this game ahead of a crucial clash with Cruz Azul on Saturday at Estadio Azul and will not risk some of their top players. Ivan Zamorano and Duilio Davino are nursing minor injuries and will not make the trip.

Stars such as Adolfo Rios, Raul Lara, German Villa, and Franky Oviedo are being held back in Mexico for the game at 8pm local time at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela.

Just five of America's regulars will be playing in the game including winger José Antonio Castro, goalkeeper Alberto Becerra, winger José Antonio González, midfielder Álvaro Ortiz and right back Octavio Valdéz.

Even head coach Manuel Lapuente will not be leading the Aguilas into battle, leaving the reins to assistant Gonzalo Farfán.

This series will begin the CONCACAF Champions Cup a month before the rest of the games because of America's involvement in the Copa Libertadores as well, a tournament they are taking with a bit more seriousness.

Meanwhile, Alajuelense have won three of their first four matches in the Costa Rican Verano Tournament.

The second leg of this series will be March 24 in Mexico.

Is Concacaf allowing this ???? It doesnt seem fair to the paying public not to be able to watch a full strength America !!! Then of course I guess you just dont buy a tickect for the game..period..
