Honduras named 2001 FIFA Team of the Year

ZURICH, Dec 17 (AFP)

Honduras has been named the 2001 FIFA Team of the Year ahead of Colombia and Costa Rica, world football's governing body FIFA announced here on Monday.
Costa Rica was also given a special mention as the most improved team of the year ahead of Australia and Honduras.
The top 10 list for the team of the year was surprising because it contained neither a European nation nor one of the favourites for next year's World Cup finals in South Korea and Japan.
Honduras won the award after winning the most points, based on the seven best performances multiplied by a co-efficient which increases or decreases depending on the place of the opponent in the FIFA rankings.
2001 FIFA Team of the Year award
1. Honduras 39.7, 2. Colombia 38.4, 3. Costa Rica 37.8, 4. Australia 37.4, 5. Uruguay 36.3, 6. Bahrein 35.8, 7. Mexica 35.7, 8. China 35.1, 9. Ecuador 34.4, 10. Venezuela 34.1
Special mention for most improved team in 2001
1. Costa Rica, 2. Australia, 3. Honduras, 4. Venezuela, 5. Bahrein

Congrats to my Concacaf Buddies and all their Followers !!!!

Top honour for minnows Honduras

Honduras have been named FIFA team of the year, after a strong World Cup qualifying campaign and the historic Copa America upset over Brazil.
Members of the Honduran Federation received the award in Zurich on Monday.
The Catrachos jumped 20 places in the FIFA World Rankings in the past year, and they edged out Australia for the award, who lost to Uruguay in a World Cup play-off.
Honduras did register two wins over Uruguay in the Copa America, to which they were invited as last minute replacements. They edged The Celestes 1-0 in a group clash, before winning the third-place play-off on penalties against the Uruguayans.
The most historic win though for Ramon Maradiaga's team was a 2-0 triumph over Brazil in the quarter-finals of the South American competition.
But Honduras lost what was in essence a World Cup play-off game going down to Mexico in the final CONCACAF World Cup qualifier, and failed in their attempt for a second World Cup appearance.
Still, they won three games away from home in World Cup qualifying campaign, including a thrilling 3-2 win over the United States in September.
Honduras' success on the international stage has led to transfers of their players to European clubs. Striker Carlos Pavon and defender Samuel Caballero both moved to Italian Serie A side Udinese this summer.

I can see why CR might have a case in deserving the team of the year award, but Guatemala no way.

Winning the UNCAF games is just not enough reason to be the best team of the year. No offense but Guatemala still has ways to go before it can compete consistenly at a high level. CR and Hondo are certainly ahead of them in that department IMO.

Although Guatemala is no easy meat either, but they are not that good yet.
