Haiti, El Salvador battle to scoreless draw

Haiti, El Salvador battle to scoreless draw

16.12.01 - A brave Haiti side, playing a man down for more than an hour, battled to a scoreless draw with El Salvador as both teams began their final run-in to the FC Gold Cup 2002 on Saturday at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida USA.
Despite having Jean-Muller Altidor sent off for a reckless tackle from behind after just 25 minutes, Haiti carried most of the play throughout the match, though quality chances were few and far between.

A quality William Renderos free kick from just outside the area, tipped over the bar by Haiti goalkeeper Geteau Ferdinand just before the hour, was the best chance of the night for either side. Haiti forward Golman Pierre caused the El Salvador defense some anxious moments in the final quarter-hour with a pair of headers, but both were dealt with easily by Salvadoran custodian Carlos Lopez.

Haiti will play in Group D of the Gold Cup, based in Miami, along with Ecuador and defending champion Canada. El Salvador will play in Group A, along with Guatemala and three-time champion Mexico, in Pasadena, California.
