America open training camp .

America opened their training camp in Acapulco yesterday with Braulio Luna and Fabian Estay noticeably absent from the proceedings.
Both players fell out of favour with club officials and spent some time with the reserve side last season.
Estay is likely to be on his way to Atlas, where he will pair up with his former coach Enrique Meza. The two teamed up to win a couple of titles with Toluca. Luna, meanwhile, will likely move on to another Mexican side, possibly Leon.
America's latest addition is 30-year-old Hugo Norberto Castillo. The player, who scored six goals last season for Atlas, will join Ivan Zamorano, Leonardo Fabio Moreno, Luis Hernandez and Jesus Mendoza in the impressive American attack.
America will spend four days in the Mexican resort city before heading back to Mexico City.

FMF announces plan for Verano 2002

www.teamtalk.com

The Mexican Football Federation has decided that national team members will play in the forthcoming Verano 2002 season.
The league will not strip the clubs of their national team players, but the amount of time the clubs can count on their Mexican internationals will be limited.
However, the entire Liguilla, or play-offs, will be played without internationals as the season is set to conclude on May 26. The national team will start their training camp on April 22, which means clubs will have to play the last several weeks of the regular season without their top Mexican players.
"The idea is to give the national team 100 per cent support and give the coach and his players 45 days before the start of the World Cup," Mexican First Division President Rafael Lebrija said. "This decision was unanimous."
The Verano 2002 season will commence on January 5 and will not finish until five days before France and Senegal kick off the World Cup on May 31. The league will only have two midweek rounds - typically, the league holds midweek rounds to shave off time at the end of the season.
FMF officials also announced the national team's plans to play friendlies on February, March and April 13, as well as the send-off match in Estadio Azteca on May 12. Opponents have yet to be selected.
For France 98, the national team left Mexico for Europe six weeks before the start of the World Cup, playing nine friendlies in Europe.

Necaxa drop three, add Luna

www.teamtalk.com

Necaxa, who were eliminated from two tournaments in less than a week, have dropped three players and picked up one former Mexican international.

The club have added midfielder Braulio Luna from America. Luna, 27, did not score any goals for America's meek offense last season, though he was a regular on the starting lineup. He was also a member of the Mexico's 1998 World Cup squad.

Necaxa crashed out in the semifinals of Copa Merconorte and the first round of the Mexican Liguilla despite winning the first legs of both series.

The club said goodbye to Nelson Parraguez, Jaime Hernandez and Jose Milian. Of the trio, only Milian scored last season.
Necaxa coach Raul Arias has expressed interest in obtaining Edson Alvarado, formerly of Santos, ex-Atlante midfielder Salvador Cabrera and ex-Puebla defender Jose Maria Higareda.

One of Necaxa's top players is unsure of his status with the club, but that has not prevented him from training with the club. Alfredo Moreno, who led Necaxa with three goals this season, was due to be with Necaxa through the 2001 calendar year. Moreno, 21, is property of Boca Juniors but said he would welcome another season with the Mexicans.

"I don't know what is going to happen to me," Moreno told Mexican news agency Notimex. "Necaxa officials have not given me any indication but I understand that whatever agreement is made will have to be made between the Argentine club [Boca] and Los Rayos and if I continue my agent will work out the conditions with representatives of the Mexican club."

More changes for America

www.internetsoccer.com

One veteran is on his way in while another may be on his way out.

America acquired Alvaro Ortiz, formerly of Necaxa, to shore up their midfield. Ortiz has also played for Chivas and Leon and will take the place of Braulio Luna as an attacking midfielder.

Ortiz said it will not be easy to join a club like America.

"I am going to try and win a starting spot," he said. "It will be difficult but it was not easy at Necaxa either. Here, the players are renowned."

Ortiz also said it will not be as difficult to adjust to the style of his new coach, Manuel Lapuente. The former national team coach, Lapuente called on Ortiz for several international matches.

Meanwhile, Raul Gutierrez, a former Mexican international, might leave America for Leon. The defender told reporters the offer is on the table but he needs to talk with America and Leon officials to find out the details of the possible move to see what is best for him.

Gutierrez, 35, has been a mainstay with America for more than six years. Gutierrez joined America in 1994 and has been with the club for all but one of the ensuing seasons. In Invierno 2000, he moved to Atlante but returned to America after the end of the season.

For the past several seasons, though, Gutierrez has been relegated to a reserve role. He may return to a starting role with Leon, who will battle against relegation in the upcoming Verano 2002 campaign.

Chivas strike out in striker search

www.teamtalk.com

Chivas have had no luck with strikers this week, after veteran Carlos Hermosillo left the team and Luis Hernandez rejected an invitation to join.
Hermosillo left the team on Tuesday, citing a lack of playing time as the main reason. Hermosillo, who is second in goals in the history of the Mexican national team, had just two goals for Chivas in Invierno 2001. By the end of the season, he had been relegated to a reserve role as Jair Garcia and Manuel Sol played regularly up front.
During a press conference, Hermosillo blamed the front office for mishandling the club, and said he does not know what he will do next. He has received offers from La Piedad and Leon - clubs where he would likely land a starting role with - but he also said he might consider retirement.
Meanwhile, Hernandez had drawn the interest of Chivas but, although he expressed his gratitude over Chivas' interest, he said he had a contract with America till June 2002 and would like to honour the deal.
However, Atlante forward Jose Manuel Abundis, who scored 12 goals in Invierno 2001, has caught Chivas attention and may be headed for Guadalajara. Abundis, who was born in the city, is still with Atlante but the club is not sure whether they will bring him back for next season.

Hermosillo Says Goodbye To Soccer Playing.

In a press conference in Mexico City, last nite Carlos Hermosillo formaly retired from active duty as a player.
He mentioned that the time had come to look into other aspects of the sport that so much gave him and his family.
He mentioned that in a very short time he will be involved in a player development with a Team of the Mexican League.

Look out for him to be involved with Atlante.....my hunch is that he's going in that direction because Carlos Reinoso (His father in Law) is the present Coach there !!!!

Cruz Azul News

Sebastian" El Loco " Abreu was formarly introduced yesterday to the Press and the Cruz Azul Fans as the striker who comes to remedy all their lack of goal scoring after Cardozo and Palencia left the Cementeros.
Abreu already familiar with the Mexican League, as he played 2 or 3 short championships with Tecos, has been some sort of lucky charm for the last two teams he has played for...Was champion with San Lorenzo in Argentina and just a week ago with Nacional of Montevideo.

Irapuato moves over to the Gulf Coast

Due to the lack of support for the Team in the city of Irapuato, Gto, the team switches cities and beginning with the Verano Championship they will be playing in Veracruz.
The article I just read doesnt specify wether the name is also being switched, in other words will the be playing as Irapuato out of the new city ?? Or take the name of the Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz ???

Chivas acquires former national team star

www.teamtalk.com

Chivas has announced the signing of former national team star Ramon Ramirez as well as forward Jorge Santillana.
Both players spent last season with Tigres.
This is Ramirez's second stint at Chivas, where he starred in the late 1990s, leading the club to their last championship, the Verano 1997 title. The player still makes his home in Guadalajara.
A left-footed midfielder, Ramirez represented Mexico in USA 94 and France 98. He played for the national team in late 2000. In December 2000, Ramirez was involved in a fatal car accident while on his way to report to national team training camp. Four people died in the wreck, and Ramirez was left with a torn Achilles tendon.
Ramirez, 32, only recently returned to competitive football and has yet regained his form.
Santillana, meanwhile, will add depth to Chivas' strike force, bolstering the already-potent arsenal of Jair Garcia and Manuel Sol.
The moves come the day after Chivas acquired Gilberto Adame and Agustin Garcia from Tecos.

Tigres dismantling already ??

The Whole Enchilada.......

No more Irapuato; club moves to Veracruz

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Luis Bueno
21 December 2001 (TEAMtalk)

-- Now you see Irapuato, now you don't.

Irapuato pulled off a disappearing act on Thursday after officials announced the club will be moving from central Mexico to the Eastern coast.

Freseros del Irapuato will now be known as Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz, effective immediately. Citing lack of support as the main cause, officials with Grupo Pegaso -- owners of the former Irapuato club -- voted to move the club to a top flight-starved venue. The move was ratified by the Mexican Football Federation on Thursday.

The people of Veracruz are not strangers to First Division football. The local club, Veracruz, have had stints in the top flight, but have been in the Primera A Division for nearly a decade. Veracruz, though, won the second division's Invierno 2001 campaign and will have a shot to play for promotion in the summer. There is a strong possibility that Veracruz will have two top flight clubs competing in the Invierno 2002 season.

It was not immediately known what the second division side will do regarding their suddenly shared name.

Irapuato were promoted to the First Division in 2000, after a long stretch of time in the lower divisions of Mexico. The club earned a playoff berth in their first season in the top flight but have struggled since then. Attendance has sagged and hit a low last season.

Before the start of the Invierno 2001 season, Grupo Pegaso were reportedly interested in selling the club. However, nobody stepped forward and the company decided to stick with the club.

A very complicated 2002 for America

www.vivefutbol.com

Basically...in an interview with a local mexican daily Esto.....(What I have been saying all along)....This 2002 year will be extremelly difficult for them due to America's involvement in THREE tough competitions at the same time !!!
It's going to take a mammoth involvement from all the players to come forward in the coming campaigns !!!

On Tigres and Monterrey

Monterrey has brought in 2 argentinians in Mario Grana & Damian Alvarez.....
Tigres meanwhile have signed up MA Chima Ruiz and Noe Zarate and await for 24 yrs old Edilton from Curitiba, Brazil........

Castillo officially joins America

www.dailysoccer.com

Hugo Norberto Castillo is officially a part of America.

Castillo, formerly of Atlas, was headed to America more than a week ago, but America officials could not finalize Castillo's contract.

During that time, Castillo was nearly headed to other clubs, including Monterrey, but the America deal went through on Wednesday.

Castillo will replace Leonardo Fabio Moreno, who was loaned to Leon earlier this week. Castillo scored six goals last season and will bolster an already potent front line of Ivan Zamorano, Luis Hernandez and Jesus Mendoza.

Moreno will be a welcome addition with goal-starved Leon. Although Moreno scored just twice last season, he broke through with Celaya in Verano 2001, scoring 10 goals.

Meanwhile, America rid themselves of Alberto Macias. The lanky defender was transferred to Atlas on Wednesday. Macias was a member of Toluca's championship clubs in the late 1990s. Macias played for the Mexican national team in 2000 and early 2001. However, Macias was not a good fit with America. He spent much of his time on the bench.

America may not be done dealing. America coach Manuel Lapuente may have some interest in bringing in former Atlante and national team players Jose Manuel Abundis and Salvador Carmona.

Necaxa land pair of Colombian aces

www.internetsoccer.com

Though Necaxa lost to Millonarios in the Copa Merconorte semifinals they have now signed two top players from the Colombian side.

Carlos Castro and Carlos Gutierrez will be on loan for one year from Millonarios

The duo should give an offensive burst to Necaxa. Castro led the Colombian league in goals last season with 29 and has been a consistent scorer for several years. Gutierrez, meanwhile, is an attacking midfielder and will add depth to the already potent midfield of Alex Aguinaga, Luis Perez and newcomer Braulio Luna.

Also, with Aguinaga's availability in doubt because Ecuadorian national team duty, Gutierrez should have plenty of playing time.

Necaxa qualified for the Liguilla last season but did so despite having nobody score more than three goals during the regular season. The club also sent longtime striker Agustin Delgado to England and Luis Roberto Alves "Zague" is likely on his last legs.

Youngster Alfredo Moreno has played well for Necaxa but there has been uncertainty regarding his status and future with Necaxa.

Toluca coach at odds with players

www.internetsoccer.com

-- Coach Ricardo Lavolpe said that he would not coach Toluca as long as David Rangel and Victor Ruiz were part of the club.

"If Victor Ruiz and David Rangel stay, we'll see who the coach of Toluca will be," he said after refusing to run a practice where both players attended.

Rangel and Ruiz are both longtime members of Toluca. Each were with the club in the recent glory years, winning titles in 1998, 1999 and 2000. Both earned spots on the national team roster under former Toluca coach Enrique Meza.

However, Lavolpe does not think their style fits with the club. The decision was not made in haste, Lavolpe insisted.

"They are great players but I am thinking about the system we have as a club. There should also be stages and they have completed theirs. My way of thinking regarding football is different then theirs. I respect them, but they do not fit here and I am in charge," he said.

Ruiz and Rangel would seem to be assets on most clubs. Ruiz can strike a free kick anywhere from 35 yards in with lethal accuracy. The attacking midfielder is not afraid to take shots. Rangel is adept at both attacking and defending. His defensive play in the midfield allows the attacking midfielders and strikers to concentrate on offense.

Atlante acquire experienced striker

30 December 2001 (TEAMtalk) --

Pedro Pineda joined his ninth First Division club on Saturday when Atlante officials announced his signing. Pineda will help Atlante's offense and should offset the possible loss of one of the club's top strikers.

Pineda scored six goals for La Piedad last year. This will be his second tour of duty with Atlante. In Verano 99, he had a successful stint with Atlante as he was among the league leaders with 13 goals.

In his career, Pineda has played for Chivas, Monterrey, America, Cruz Azul, Toros Neza, Pachuca, Necaxa, Atlante (twice) and La Piedad.

Pineda's arrival may come right on schedule. Striker Jose Manuel Abundis may be on the move. His contract was up after the Invierno 2001 season and Morelia have expressed interest in signing the former national team star. Abundis, who scored 10 goals last season, would be a welcome addition on Morelia and a tough loss for Atlante.

Meanwhile, Atlante officials said they have all but cut off negotiations with America over Fabian Estay. Atlante officials told reporters the club could not wait for America to decide as the season will start in one week.
