The Copa Centroamericana

The Copa Centroamericana

The Copa Centroamericana – the championship of Central American national teams and a qualifying tournament for the CONCACAF Gold Cup – could be held in the United States in fall 2014 or January 2015, according to FutbolMLS.com and reports from Prensa Libre in Guatemala and Prensa Grafica in El Salvador from UNCAF meetings this month.

The tournament, held in January in recent years, would mark the 25th anniversary of UNCAF, the governing body of the seven Central American national associations, if held in 2015. The idea of hosting the tournament in the United States was raised publicly at UNCAF meetings in Costa Rica last month, but discussions have evolved this week with the suggestion that El Salvador is bidding to host. Officials are also considering moving the tournament to the autumn months of 2014.

If the tournament is held in the United States, possible sites include Washington, Dallas, Houston, and multiple cities in California

The Union of Central American Football (UNCAF) confirmed on Tuesday that it will play the 2014 Copa Centroamericana tournament in the United States between Sept. 1-14. Matches are expected to take place in Washington D.C., Houston, Dallas, and Los Angeles.

Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama will take part in the tournament, with the top five finishers earning a place in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. According to a report by Spanish news agency EFE, one of the main reasons for moving the tournament to the U.S. was the financial incentive of playing games in front of big crowds of expatriates.

The previous edition of the Copa Centroamericana took place in Costa Rica in January 2013. Los Ticos prevailed in the final, 1-0, against Honduras.

UNCAF’s Central American Cup to be Held in the United States in Late Summer 2014

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala (Tuesday, May 20, 2014) – The Central American Football Union (UNCAF) today officially confirmed that it will play the Central American Cup in the United States from September 3-13, 2014. In addition to providing a series of berths in important international tournaments, the Central American Cup USA 2014 will serve to celebrate UNCAF’s upcoming 25th anniversary.

This edition of the tournament – the region’s championship for national teams and a qualifying competition for the CONCACAF Gold Cup – will include unique details and features as Central American countries begin their quest towards the prestigious FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017 (six continental champions, reigning World Cup champion and tournament host) and the Centennial Cup America 2016 (10 nations of CONMEBOL in South America, plus six teams from CONCACAF).

Looking at the squads, Costa Rica should win this easy, they are without a couple of key players but for the most part their strongest squad. Honduras have a complete B squad

Panama-Costa Rica was the match of the day, Panama were leading 2:0 but Costa Rica came back and Panama missed a penalty kick late in the match.

El Salvador beat Honduras who might now finish in the top 2 if they don't beat Guatemala, who won their opening two fixtures

So the group stage is complete, plenty of surprises in Group A while in Group B it was straight forward and as expected came down to goal difference.

GROUP A
Guatemala 9
El Salvador 6
Honduras 3
Belize 0

Guatemala winning all three matches is a massive surprise and Honduras really disappointed, I'll explain later their scenario

GROUP B
Costa Rica 4 +3
Panama 4 +2
Nicaragua 0

This group simply came down to who beat Nicaragua more, and it was Costa Rica. Panama had a hard time breaking them down but did score two late goals, not enough to add more

So the final is Costa Rica vs. Guatemala: The winner of this match will qualify for the 2016 Copa America. Both sides have already qualified for next summer's Gold Cup. Remember Costa Rica have largely a domestic based squad as its not a FIFA date, only Bryan Ruiz and Jose Miguel Cubero are players from abroad.

El Salvador-Panama are playing a third place match which is pretty much meaningless, both have qualified for the Gold Cup as well

Honduras will face Nicaragua in a 5th place playoff. This match is somewhat important as the winner will still be alive in Gold Cup contention as they will play a Caribbean opponent in a two-leg playoff for the final spot in the Gold Cup. Honduras should be able to progress through this but if they fail to qualify for even the Gold Cup it will be a massive disappointment

From the games I saw, Costa Rica is easily the best team, Guatemala meanwhile are being carried by Marco Pappa

The final which kicked off at midnight eastern time was played and I couldn't watch it due to the ridiculous late start. Anyway as expected Costa Rica wins the tournament and qualifies for the 2016 Copa America. Guatemala gave them a good test according to reports

The other meaningful match saw Honduras struggle to beat Nicaragua, meaning Honduras keeps their Gold Cup hopes alive
