The rivalry between these two is an unusual one. The only reason it probably exists is because of that loss Mexico suffered to the U.S. at the World Cup. If it weren't for that for the most part it probably would have headed in a one sided direction. But because of that loss I guess it gave some American patriots some bragging rights.

But now the U.S. football team finally won a game at Azteca so I guess they're playing catchup. They can enjoy it while they can but Mexico in recent years is still ahead of them quality wise and I don't expect so many of the matches to be as close as the one last night.

I would hardly consider a win in a friendly against an unmotivated Mexican team any kind of benchmark or indication of a better USMNT

The GAP is becoming scary wide

Since that World Cup Game:

US: 6
Mex: 4
Draw: 4

Take out Friendlies;

US: 3
Mex: 4
Draw: 1

Yes, the gap is scary wide. Not to mention in the 2014 qualifier cycle, the 5 point differential.
