2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League

If 2013 is to be the year an MLS team finally lays its hands on the CONCACAF Champions League trophy, then it certainly won't come easy.

The league's five representatives in the 2012-13 edition of the tournament learned their group-stage fates on Tuesday. Though most will avoid Mexican teams, the condensed format – with only three teams in each group – means there will be little margin for error in the quest to reach the knockout stages, as only the group winners will make it.

FULL DRAW FOR 2012-13 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP STAGE

Group 1:
Santos Laguna (MEX)
Toronto FC (CAN)
CD Águila (SLV)

Group 2:
Herediano (CRC)
Real Salt Lake (USA)
Tauro FC (PAN)

Group 3:
Olimpia (HON)
Houston Dynamo (USA)
CD FAS (SLV)

Group 4:
Seattle Sounders (USA)
Marathón (HON)
Caribbean 1

Group 5:
LA Galaxy (USA)
Isidro Metapán (SLV)
Caribbean 3

Group 6:
Tigres UANL (MEX)
Alajuelense (CRC)
Real Estelí (NIC)

Group 7:
Chorrillo (PAN)
Monterrey (MEX)
Municipal (GUA)

Group 8:
Xelajú (GUA)
CD Guadalajara (MEX)
Caribbean 2

Only the group winners will advance to the knockout round.

Unlike previous years where a second draw was conducted to set the pairings for the Championship round, the quarterfinals will match the team with the best record against the qualifier with the worst record. The second-best team will face the seventh-best, third against sixth and fourth against fifth.

The top four teams will play the second leg at home.

In the semifinals, the winner of 1-vs-8 will face the winner of 4-vs-5 (with the 1-vs-8 winner hosting the second leg), and likewise 3-vs-6 will play 4-vs-5 (with the survivor of 3-vs-6 hosting the second leg). In the finals, the team that prevails out of the upper bracket of 1-vs-8_4-vs-5 will host the second leg.

The Champions League will begin July 31 and conclude October 26, with the quarterfinals set to begin March 5.

NASL in the CCL?

The CONCACAF Champions League resumed play on Tuesday night, with five teams from Major League Soccer among the eight groups of three teams. The Los Angeles Galaxy and Houston Dynamo qualified as champion and runner up of MLS, Sporting Kansas City qualified as the U.S. Open Cup winner, San Jose as the Supporters Shield winners, and the Montreal Impact qualified as winners of Canada's Amway Canadian Championship.

But what about the possibility of an NASL team taking part in the CCL? Some around the league would like to see it happen, and there are currently two paths to that end, a team either winning the Lamar Hunt Open Cup, or winning the Canadian Championship.

The Carolina RailHawks advanced as far as the quarterfinals of the Open Cup this year, and FC Edmonton played in the semi-finals of the Canadian Cup, falling in a two-game set to Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

RailHawks coach Colin Clarke would like to see an NASL qualify via another route.

"I think the NASL champion should qualify," said Clarke. "The standards and the quality of some of the teams from some of the smaller countries are certainly not up to the standards of NASL."
