Chile calls off World Cup tune-ups after earthquake
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- Chile has called off two friendlies this week because of the earthquake that has killed at least 700 people in the country. The South Americans were scheduled to play a rare doubleheader on Wednesday in Santiago, facing North Korea and Costa Rica.
The June 11-July 11 World Cup in South Africawill be Chile's first since 1998. North Korea has also advanced. Harold Mayne-Nicholls, president of the Chile federation, said football was a low priority in the face of the death and destruction brought by the earthquake.
"Football cannot remain apart from the catastrophe," Mayne-Nicholls said on the federation's Web site. "Nor can we be indifferent in the face of the pain and tragedy for thousands of Chileans
