Paraguay striker Salvador Cabanas shot in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP)—Paraguay striker Salvador Cabanas was in critical condition Monday after being shot in the head at a Mexico City bar.

The Club America forward was conscious when he arrived at a hospital where he was being operated on to remove the bullet, team president Michel Bauer told Televisa network.

Two suspects were detained but it wasn’t clear whether they were robbing Cabanas or were in an argument with him, Mexico City Attorney General Miguel Angel Mancera told Televisa.

Mancera said Cabanas was shot before dawn Monday inside a bathroom at the bar where he had gone with his wife.

“It’s still not clear what happened,” Mancera said.

Cabanas is slated to play for Paraguay at the World Cup. Paraguay will face defending champion Italy, New Zealand and Slovakia in the first round in South Africa.

No Changes In Salvador Cabanas' Situation

Goal.com

Paraguayan international Salvador Cabanas' situation worsened late on Wednesday because of a cerebral edema (an accumulation of fluid) that continued to grow, but the Club America star's situation has since been stable.

"The situation of Salvador is stable. The problem is under control at the moment and there have been no unfavourable changes. That gives us peace of mind. The situation remains very serious though," said doctor Ernesto Martinez at a press conference.

"We do not know how long the swelling will remain. We are almost 62 hours after the operation now. I expect the swelling to decrease after about 72 hours, so we have to wait."

Cabanas was shot in the head inside the "Bar Bar" night club in Mexico City on the morning of January 25. There is no known reason for the attack, but the player was reportedly conscious on the way to the hospital.

MEXICO

Morelia, Santos Laguna, Pachuca and Toluca took a step towards the Clausura semi-finals by taking the upper hand in their last-eight ties after the first legs.

Toluca drew 2-2 away to America at the Azteca in Mexico City where all the goals were scored inside the opening half hour. They then hung on with 10 men after defender Diego Novaretti was sent off in the 34th minute.

The “Monarchs” of Morelia beat 10-man title favourites Guadalajara 4-2 after the “Chivas” had forward Omar Arellano sent off four minutes before the interval.

Guadalajara will be looking to pick themselves up when they face Argentina’s Velez Sarsfield with a 3-0 lead in the second leg of their Libertadores Cup last-16 tie in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.

Santos Laguna beat Pumas UNAM 2-0 and Pachuca won 1-0 against Apertura winners Monterrey.

Goals galore as Mexican semis end all square

MORELIA, Mexico (AP)—Luis Gabriel Rey scored from a late penalty as Morelia and Santos shared six goals in a seesaw 3-3 draw in the first leg of the Mexican Clausura semifinals on Wednesday.

Goals also flowed freely in the other semifinal, where Dario Cvitanovich scored a late equalizer as Pachuca came from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Toluca.

The return legs of both ties will be played on Saturday.

Oribe Peralta opened the scoring for Santos at Morelia in the seventh minute, but Morelia’s veteran striker Jared Borgetti brought the scores level in the 35th.

Santos was back in front with Juan Pablo Rodriguez’ penalty in the 55th minute, but was pegged back again by Elias Hernandez’ strike nine minutes later.

Jorge Estrada re-established Santos lead in the 66th minute before Luis Gabriel Rey squeezed the game’s second penalty under goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez to even the tie up for the third time in the 85th.

In the other semifinal, Diego Novaretti headed Toluca into the lead against host Pachuca from a free kick just after half time. Damian Manso equalized from close range in the 60th.

Toluca took the lead again with a Hector Mancilla header from Sinha’s free kick in the 81st minute, but Cvitanovich leveled for a second time in the 86th, heading into an empty net after Juan Cacho’s looping header hit the post.
