Gold Cup 2009
MIAMI - Canada and Costa Rica are in and waiting to see who they will play next. Jamaica is waiting to see if they will play again.
Jamaica's 1-0 win over El Salvador was enough to send Costa Rica through to the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup as the second place team in Group A, while Canada's 2-2 draw with Costa Rica assured it of the top spot.
Canada finished the group with seven points followed by Costa Rica with four, and Jamaica and El Salvador with three apiece.
Though both Jamaica and El Salvador finished with identical records, El Salvador was eliminated having lost to Jamaica. The Reggae Boyz will now have to wait for the results the results of the final Group B and C matches tomorrow and Saturday to determine whether they advance.
Next weekend, Canada will take on the second place team in Group B Saturday in one quarterfinal in Philadelphia. In another quarterfinal, Costa Rica will take on the second-place team from Group C in Dallas.
Omar Cummings' goal in the 70th minute capped a disappointing end to a game El Salvador hoped to dictate from the start. After starting the group stage with a 2-1 win over Costa Rica, Los Cuscatlecos lost their last two games and didn't score a goal.
Now, El Salvador will turn its attention back to 2010 World Cup qualifying, which they hope isn't a carry-over of its Gold Cup performance.
"We know we're going to face a team like T&T that has the same sort of character like Jamaica," said defender Alfredo Pacheco. "These games are very helpful. We're going to face Costa Rica in the future and it's a very good national team. We came to this tournament to learn. It's a shame we couldn't score goals, but our focus remains South Africa."
Jamaica finally was able to score, but that was little consolation for Jamaica coach Theodore Whitmore.
"After two losses, coming into the third and final game we're very disappointed," Whitmore said. "We didn't deserve to be to be in this position.I hope something will happen for us to move on and allow us to show our true potential."
Meanwhile, Canada and Costa Rica will have a week to recover and prepare for their quarterfinal matches.
Both teams put on an offensive display in the first half scoring four goals in an 11-minute span in the first half.Costa Rica then pushed forward in the second half looking for the winning goal, but couldn't break a Canadian defense that was missing five regulars and two starting defenders due to injury or yellow-card trouble.
"For us this game in particular there were too many changes we just couldn't find a rhythm," Hart said. "In the second half, we did marginally better, but overall what we had to do tonight was suffer and we got the result of a point, but at least with three games and now we have a few days to recuperate and head to the quarterfinals."
