Villarreal May Replace Franco With Cabañas

Goal.com

Villarreal is preparing like every other team in Europe to reinforce any missing links to their line ups. Villarreal will be missing one key player for next season. Guillermo Franco admitted to be leaving the club once his contract expires.

The yellow submarine will be looking to help compliment Nihat, Llorente, and Rossi. But they might just find the answer in the same league where they found Franco. Futbolmercado reported that Villarreal could be looking to acquire the services of Salvador Cabañas.

Salvador Cabañas, who plays with Club America in Mexico, would be an ideal candidate for Villarreal. The America striker netted the ball 13 times this season and was second to Hector Mancilla from Toluca in overall leading scorer for the Mexican league.

Although Cabañas does seem to be a likely candidate, his transfer could be difficult. America has said time after time that the Paraguayan national is not for sale. Cabañas meant a lot to America especially since he was practically the only one making any goals for them this season.

America has also shown resistance when another of their star players has been requested by a European club. Guillermo Ochoa, goalkeeper for America, has been followed for years but America has been reluctant to hear any offers for the prized keeper. America does not trade players that easy especially when they mean a lot to the team.

Out of the 25 total goals that America scored this season, Cabañas scored 13. The 28-year-old has played 3 seasons with America where he has appeared in 85 games and has 48 goals. He has also started 39 times with Paraguay and has netted in seven occasions.

Cruz Azul's Landin Happy Reunited With Meza

Goal.com

After a disastrous end to their season, Cruz Azul decided to fire Benjamin Galindo and bring back Enrique Meza. Many names were thrown around as a possible replacement for Galindo. Out of all of them, they seemingly got the best one.

Meza brought nothing less than success to his now former club Pachuca. Now it's time for Meza to be reunited for the fourth time with Cruz Azul and also with one of his former pupils.

Luis Angel Landin played under "El Ojitos" from 2006-2007, where he supposedly left in bad terms with Meza. But as soon as Meza's appointment was made official, Landin was more than happy to see his former manager back, reported La Jornada.

"It has always been said that me and him did not end on good terms. That never happened, we never clashed we always spoke face to face. He is a person that likes to confront his players. I left in good terms with him and it gives me joy that he comes to coach a team like Cruz Azul," said Landin.

Landin and Meza enjoyed a lot of success together. While they were at Pachuca they won the 2006 and 2007 Clausura championship. They also won the 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup, which led them to the Club World Cup.

Landin was the leading scorer for Cruz Azul netting seven times this season, and arguably having the best goal of the season. The coaching change could just boost up Landin's attack as Meza is a very attack oriented manager. Both will try to pursue greatness again but this time with slightly different colors.

(Cruz Azul President is Chilean Quintano, former player and coach too)

Not QUITE Apertura yet, but the appetizers .....

Club America wins in World Football Challenge

Associated Press

Onyewu, who earlier this month became the first American-born player to sign a contract with AC Milan, made his debut for AC Milan to begin the second half Wednesday night. While he was on the losing side in Club America’s 2-1 victory in the World Football Challenge, the defender was looking at the positive side.

“We have a long time before the season starts,” Onyewu said. “This preparation will only help me and the team get better. I feel good, my teammates make me feel comfortable, and I am happy to be on the field.”

Daniel Marquez headed in the winning goal to help Club America take its second straight victory in the tournament.

Just one day after practicing for the first time with his new teammates, Onyewu had been on the field only 10 minutes when Salvador Cabanas’ pass looped over his head and Enrique Esqueda used a high kick to beat goalkeeper Marco Storari’s late dive to the left.

AC Milan’s Filippo Inzaghi scored on a breakaway 66 minutes into the exhibition match, running past Club America defenders Guillermo Cerda and Ademar Rodriguez to beat goalkeeper Armando Navarrete’s late dive to the left.

Marquez made it 2-1 in the 84th minute.

How did Onyewu feel he performed?

“I don’t ever grade myself publicly, but I think we fought well and fought hard and we didn’t capitalize on some chances,” he said. “But the fact we created a lot of chances will be good in the long run.”

Many of the 53,600 fans at the Georgia Dome cheered Onyewu in his debut with AC Milan. After getting a welcome hug from midfielder Clarence Seedorf, Onyewu was announced to replace defender Alessandro Nesta.

“He introduced himself with a lot of personality,” Seerdorf said of his new teammate.” He’s still trying to fit in, but he’s going to be an important player for us.”

Onyewu, 27, whose parents emigrated to the United States from Nigeria, left to play professionally in Europe seven years ago.

He signed a three-year deal with Milan earlier this month, but the Italian club had been tracking Onyewu since he emerged with Belgium’s Standard Liege in 2004. Despite an unsuccessful 11-game stint with Newcastle, where he often failed to keep up with the fast pace in the English Premier League, Onyewu returned to Belgium for the 2007-2008 season and helped Standard Liege win consecutive Belgian league titles.

For the United States, Onyewu started all three games at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and showed his talent in the Americans’ CONCACAF Gold Cup championships in 2005 and ’07.

He most recently helped the United States to the Confederations Cup final, where it lost 3-2 to Brazil.

Onyewu admitted to having a language barrier with Milan, something that needs to be conquered quickly.

“Obviously I just started training yesterday, we can’t communicate as well as I would like to on the field,” he said. “It’s not that much of an issue, it’s still football. We use sign language and other stuff. But I do need to pick up the language as quick as possible to minimize all the other minor areas I need to improve on.”

Club America beat Inter Milan 5-4 on penalty kicks Sunday in Stanford, Calif. The Mexico-based club took eight shots, four on goal. Cabanas and Juan Carlos Silva each had three attempts for Club America.

Ronaldinho, Seedorf and Gianmarco Zigoni each had three shots for AC Milan.

Mexican champions UNAM hammered at home in derby

MEXICO CITY, Aug 2 (Reuters)

- Mexican champions Pumas UNAM continued their miserable start to the season when they were hammered 3-0 at home by arch-rivals Cruz Azul in a derby on Sunday.

The Blue Machine ended a winless run of 11 matches, stretching back to last season, and left the Pumas bottom of Group Three with no points from two games after last week’s 1-0 defeat at Atlas.

Pumas, coached by Brazilian Ricardo Ferretti, fell behind just before halftime when their Paraguayan defender Dario’s Veron headed back pass sailed over goalkeeper Sergio Bernal into his own net.

Cruz Azul’s Paraguayan midfielder Cristian Riveros increased their lead early in the second half with a header from Jaime Lozano’s cross.

Argentine striker Emanuel Villa, who joined Cruz Azul from English Championship (second division) side Derby County at the end of last season, netted the third after picking up a rebound off keeper Bernal.

There were big victories for Tigres UANL, who won 3-1 at Guadalajara, and Monterrey, who beat former Mexico coach Ricardo La Volpe’s Atlas 3-0.

The only teams with 100 percent records after two matches are Toluca, 2-0 winners away to Chiapas on Saturday, and Pachuca, who beat promoted Queretaro 3-1 on Friday.

CONCACAF club champions Atlante’s game with San Luis was postponed because they have been taking part in the Peace Cup tournament in Spain.

Tidy Victory
Monterrey hosted Toluca but managed to ground the high-flying Diablos Rojos. In Goal.com's Mexico Game of the Week, Toluca could not score a goal and fell 1-0 to Monterrey on a strike by Humberto Suazo. Toluca, though, remain mentally strong after the loss.

Player Ratings: Monterrey 1-0 Toluca

Goal.com's Andrea Martinez rates the individual performances in Saturday's Monterrey-Toluca match.

Aug 15, 2009

Jonathan Orozco 8 - Good job controlling everything that came to him, and had no trouble with Toluca.

Duilio Davino 6 - Was caught several times by Toluca, but improved as the game went on and showed control over his territory.

Gerardo Galindo 6 - Solid plays throughout the game.

Luis Pérez 6.5 - Had a good game and created many chances. He also gave the assist for Monterrey’s goal.

Sergio Santana 4.5 - Wasn’t present during his time on the field and wasted the few opportunities that he had.

Aldo de Nigris 5.5 - Did a decent job, but failed to build upon several instances.

Walter Ayoví 6.5 - One of the creative forces behind Monterrey. Had opportunities himself, but it wasn’t his night to score.

Diego Ordaz 6.5 - Provided good support down the field and helped orchestrate many of the attacks.

William Paredes 6 - Played well and held his own against Toluca attacks.

Felipe Baloy 6.5 - Tirelessly tried to contribute to the game. Had a nice shot that hit on the post.

Humberto Suazo 7 - Despite coming back from an injury, “El Chupete” worked hard, and bagged a goal in the process. Could have added another, but had a good showing.

Substitutes

Osvaldo Martinez 6.5 - Worked hard to try and stir up trouble, and came close several times.

Abraham Carreño 5.5 - Didn’t do too much when he came in.

Jesus Zavala - N/A

Toluca

Hernan Cristante 7 - Came up big for Toluca several times making wonderful saves and prevented a bigger difference in the score line.

Francisco Gamboa 5 - His main contribution of the night seemed limited to constantly fouling the opposition.

Miguel Almazán 5.5 - Tried to help up top, but his services would have been better appreciated in the back.

Martín Romagnoli 5 - Monterrey easily pushed aside the player.

Manuel de la Torre 5.5 - Had trouble with Monterrey as they launched attacks and didn’t show the same level as previous encounters.

Néstor Calderón 4.5 - Not up to par with the performances that he had given during the Apertura 2009 and was disappointing.

Israel López 6 - Troubled Monterrey several times, and came up with a few opportunities for his side.

Antonio Naelson 5.5 - Usually very influential for Toluca, this time “Zinha’ was tamed by Monterrey.

Carlos Esquivel 5 - Not a good performance, and hardly troubled Monterrey.

Edgar Dueñas 5 - Committed too many errors that put Toluca in danger.

Raúl Nava 6- One of the bright spots for Toluca. Kept on trying to drive an attack, but his efforts proved were often cut short.

Substitutes

Vladimir Marin 5 - Didn’t do too bad with his time on the field, and tried to help the Toluca cause.
