The CONCACAF Champions League

http://web.mlsnet.com/news/mls_news...._mls&fext=.jsp

This will be the last season of the Champions Cup, and IMO its a smart move. The regional qualifying tournaments seemed kind of silly to me and its good that we have a new format.

Four clubs each from USA and Mexico, two from Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Panama, one from Belize, Canada, and Nicaragua, plus three Carribbean clubs.

One thought I had was about the Canadian slot - no doubt it should be there, but just wondering will they send Toronto, Vancouver, or Montreal? I know the Puerto Rico Islanders, playing the USL represented Puerto Rico in Carribbean club tournaments.

Yea, I'd have to assume that it'd be either Toronto, Vancouver, or Montreal for the Canadian slot.

CONCACAF launches new club championship

Posted on Mon, Jan. 28, 2008

By Sports Network

The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced the official launch of the new continental club championship, the CONCACAF Champions League, which will start in August 2008. The new club championship will replace the CONCACAF Champions' Cup, which will cease to exist after the '08 edition.

A record number of 24 teams from all sectors of the CONCACAF region will participate, with the preliminary round beginning in August of this year and the winner being crowned in late April '09.

The CONCACAF Champions League will feature four teams from Mexico and USA; three Caribbean sides; two clubs each from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama; and one representative coming from Canada, Belize, and Nicaragua.

Eight clubs (two Mexican, two USA, one each from Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador) will be seeded and progress directly to the first round, while the Caribbean slots have been increased to three teams for this event. The remaining 16 teams will be paired in eight home-and-away preliminary match-ups.

The preliminary round winners will join the other eight seeded teams in the group stage that consists of four groups of four. All the teams in each group will play each other in a round-robin system during six match dates from September to October.

The top two clubs from each group will advance to the knockout phase playing home-and-away elimination. The quarterfinals commence in February '09; semifinals begin in March; and the finals will take place in late April.

The CONCACAF Champions League winner will qualify as the CONCACAF's representative to the '09 edition of the FIFA Club World Cup.

So will it be like Champions' League format, with a group stage and 2-legged knockout rounds?

"Inter are finished. Their credit, obtained from Calciopoli, has run out. The team has turned from being a warship to a weak mob. To win again Moratti will probably need a new Calciopoli."

"You won a Scudetto in the court, the second because there was no competition and the third was won at the last minute. You are all a pile of s**t," Mourinho is quoted as saying by La Repubblica.

Looks like it. Essentially, they're just adding more stages to the Champions Cup, as right now that competition takes place at the same time the later stages of the Champions League would take place.

My question is, does this mean the end of the Caribbean and Central American club championships? They serve as qualifiers for the current Champions Cup, but are technically their own competitions and take place at the same time as the Champions League would.

Also, craka, do you follow T&T/Caribbean/CONCACAF football at all? It would be nice to have someone in here to talk to besides myself.

So will there be two-legged home and away games? I would really like to go to some games involving local teams playing MLS, Mexican or any league teams.

I try to follow local football, but the facilities are so under-developed here, it's really hard but I think there is growing interest from sponsors, so it's improving. But there is no TV coverage of any games at all, which sucks. All I can get is highlights in the news and stories in the papers.
