San Luis, Pumas win first-ever InterLiga matches

January 3, 2008

FRISCO, Texas (AP) -- Alfredo Moreno scored on a penalty kick in the 17th minute and San Luis beat Cruz Azul 1-0 to win its first-ever InterLiga match Wednesday night.

Moreno's goal was set up when he was fouled by Cruz Azul defender Joel Huiqui.

San Luis (1-0-0 Group B) is playing in its first InterLiga and will next face Pumas, which beat Monterrey 1-0 earlier Wednesday in the opening match of the tournament.

Cruz Azul (0-1-0) had a great scoring chance in the second half, but midfielder Edgar Andrade shot wide left on an open net in the 57th minute.

Cruz Azul has never won in seven InterLiga matches. It has now lost five times with two ties.

In addition to its past tourney struggles, Cruz Azul will be short-handed for its next match Saturday against Monterrey after Miguel Sabah received two yellow cards, and Gabino Velasco got a red card in the second half.

Sabah's second yellow card came on a hard tackle in the 68th minute. Velasco got his red card in the 76th minute.

The two players automatically receive a one-game suspension for their infractions.

In another Group B match, Pumas also won in the Interliga for the first time as Pablo Bonells scored in the 69th minute.

Bonells, who came in as a substitution at intermission, took a long pass from Gaston Caprari and converted just inside the right post from 8 yards out.

Pumas (1-0-0), which is playing in the tournament for the first time, will try for its second straight InterLiga victory Saturday against San Luis.

Pumas goalkeeper Odin Patino stopped seven shots, six of which came in the first half. Monterrey midfielder Jesus Arellano took a shot from about 25 yards that Patino made a leaping save on midway through the opening half.

Monterrey (0-1-0) lost two of three matches in last year's InterLiga and did not advance out of group play.

There will be two Group A matches Thursday night in Houston. Toluca will play Atlas, and Morelia will face America.

The top two finishers in each group will advance to the InterLiga semifinals Jan. 12.

Toluca, Atlas play to scoreless tie

January 4, 2008

HOUSTON (AP) -- Alejandro Arguello scored and Guillermo Ochoa made nine saves to help Club America beat Monarcas Morelia 1-0 Thursday night in the fourth game of the InterLiga tournament.

The competition determines which Mexican club teams will qualify for South America's Copa Libertadores tournament.

Arguello scored in just 13 minutes into the match when he settled a pass, dribbled around a defender and drilled a shot from 30 yards out. Arguello's shot bounced past Morelia keeper Moises Munoz's hand and inside the near post.

Morelia's best chance in the first half came in the 26th minute when Horacio Cervantes split two defenders and fired a shot that sailed over the crossbar.

Morelia had another chance to tie in the 55th minute when Horacio Cervantes was awarded a penalty kick, but Ochoa guessed right on the shot and stopped Cervantes giving America three points in the Group A standings.

In the earlier match, Toluca and Atlas played to a scoreless tie in the third game.

Toluca's Hernan Cristante and Atlas' Mario Rodriguez each had four saves as both teams earned a single point in the Group A standings.

Santiago Fernandez, who came off the bench for Toluca in the 69th minute, had the best scoring chance in the second half as he found some room less than 10 feet away from Rodriguez.

Instead of faking a pass, Fernandez sent a low-lying shot that Rodriguez blocked with his head.

Atlas nearly won the game in extra time when Omar Flores headed a free kick by Eduardo Rergis toward the net. But Flores' shot deflected off the crossbar.

Both teams will continue with the round robin tournament Wednesday in Carson, Calif. Toluca will play Morelia and Atlas will play Club America.

The top two finalists from each group will qualify for the InterLiga finals to be held Jan. 12, also in Carson.

January 6, 2008

Club America wins to advance, Atlas gets to InterLiga finals on coin flip

January 10, 2008

CARSON, Calif (AP) -- Alejandro Arguello scored in the 88th minute to give Mexico City's Club America a 3-2 victory over Atlas of Guadalajara on Wednesday night in a Group A match of the InterLiga soccer tournament.

In the first game, Antonio Naelson and Vicente Sanchez scored in the second half as Toluca rallied for a 3-1 victory over Morelia.

Club America won the group with nine points. Atlas tied with Toluca for second place with four points but advanced to Saturday night's championship double-header by a coin flip.

Club America will play San Luis and Mexico City's Cruz Azul will face Atlas on Saturday night.

Arguello broke a 2-2 tie when he ran onto a loose ball and fired a 21-yard shot off defender Diego Colotto and over goalkeeper Mario Rodriguez.

Club America's Salvador Cabanas, who played for Paraguay in the 2006 World Cup, and Atlas' Bruno Marioni each scored twice. Marioni's four goals lead the tournament.

Marioni put Atlas ahead in the 53rd minute with a sliding 5-yarder under the right arm of goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Cabanas tied the score in the 59th minute with an 9-yard header off Richard Nunez's corner kick, then gave Club America a 2-1 lead in the 69th minute by heading the rebound of his 9-yard shot that ricocheted off the crossbar.

Marioni forced a 2-2 tie in the 75th minute when he converted a penalty kick after Arguello fouled Atlas' Jorge Achucarro in the penalty area.

Toluca's Naelson, a member of Mexico's 2006 World Cup team, broke a 1-1 tie in the 71st minute by chipping a 23-yard shot inside the right post.

Sanchez ended the scoring in second-half stoppage time. An unmarked Sanchez took a pass from Santiago Fernandez, who was covered by two defenders, and scored from 13 yards.

Ever Guzman gave Morelia a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute with a 16-yard shot between Toluca goalkeeper Hernan Cristante's outstretched right leg and the left post.

Cristian Gimenez tied the score in the 44th by jumping over two defenders to head the ball from three yards into the upper-right corner.

4 Mexican teams to wrap up InterLiga tournament

January 11, 2008

CARSON, Calif. (AP) -- Four Mexican soccer teams will compete in the finals of the InterLiga soccer tournament for two possible berths in the Copa Libertadores, South America's most prestigious club tournament.

Atlas of Guadalajara will play San Luis in the first game of Saturday night's championship doubleheader at the Home Depot Center, then Mexico City's Club America will face crosstown rival Cruz Azul.

The winning team with the most points from group play will qualify for the Copa Libertadores. That team will join a group with Argentine power River Plate, Peru's Universidad de San Martin and a team from Chile to be determined.

The other winning team will participate in a playoff against a Bolivian club for a place in the Copa Libertadores.

Club America won all three of its InterLiga games in Group A to finish with nine points. Cruz Azul and San Luis tied for first place in Group B with six points apiece, and Atlas finished behind Club America with four points.

Chivas of Guadalajara qualified for the 2008 Copa Libertadores by winning Mexico's 2006 fall championship. Chivas did not participate in this year's InterLiga.

Club America's Alejandro Arguello, who leads his team in InterLiga scoring with three goals, is suspended for the game against Cruz Azul. Arguello received his second yellow card of the tournament after fouling Atlas's Jorge Achucarro in the penalty area in Wednesday night's 3-2 victory.

San Luis's Adrian Garcia Arias also received two yellow cards in group play and is suspended for the finals.

Club America wins InterLiga for spot in Copa Libertadores

January 13, 2008

CARSON, Calif. (AP) -- Mexico City's Club America won the InterLiga soccer tournament by defeating crosstown rival Cruz Azul 5-3 in penalty kicks in the second game of the championship doubleheader Saturday night.

Both teams were tied 2-2 after 90 minutes of regulation and 3-3 after 30 minutes of overtime.

In the first game, Jorge Achucarro had two goals and an assist to lead Atlas of Guadalajara to a 3-0 victory over San Luis.

By winning InterLiga, Club America qualified for the Copa Libertadores, South America's most prestigious club tournament. Atlas will face Bolivia's La Paz FC in a playoff for a berth in the tournament.

Salvador Cabanas, Rodrigo Lopez, Jose de Jesus Mosqueda, Oscar Rojas and German Villa converted Club America's penalty kicks.

Cruz Azul's Edgar Andrade, Nicolas Vigneri and Cesar Villaluz also converted, but Cristian Riveros' shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced away.

Gerardo Lugo put Cruz Azul ahead 3-2 in the 104th minute by tapping an 8-yard shot inside the left post. Lopez tied the score with a 3-yard shot off his right instep in the 117th minute.

Villaluz scored in the fourth minute on a 9-yard shot, but Cabanas scored twice to give Club America a 2-1 halftime lead.

Cabanas, a member of Paraguay's 2006 World Cup team, scored on a 7-yard header off Richard Nunez's corner kick in the ninth minute and converted a penalty kick in the 44th minute.

Cruz Azul's Jaime Lozano tied the score in the 71st minute with another penalty kick.

Cruz Azul head coach Sergio Markarian was ejected in the 83rd minute after a shoving match between players from both teams erupted on the field.

In the evening's first game, Bruno Marioni gave Atlas a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute with his tournament-leading fifth goal. Achucarro took Juan Carlos Medina's long pass and sent the ball from the right flank to Marioni, who scored on a 7-yard header.

Achucarro extended the lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute. Jorge Hernandez sent another long pass to Achucarro, who dribbled around goalkeeper Adrian Martinez and fired a 21-yard shot inside the left post.

Achucarro ended the scoring in the 75th minute on a curling 18-yard shot.

Atlas goalkeeper Mario Rodriguez made one save for his third shutout in four InterLiga games.
