Concacaf Nats-Games/Results

Honduras 3, Guatemala 2

October 7, 2006

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- David Suazo's tiebreaking penalty kick in the 87th minute gave Honduras a 3-2 victory over Guatemala in the first of a two-match set between CONCACAF teams Saturday night.

Suazo's successful conversion landed high inside the right post and culminated a Honduran comeback from a two-goal halftime deficit before a capacity crowd of 19,173 at Lockhart Stadium.

Guatemala's Rigoberto Gomez fouled Emil Martinez inside the penalty area, resulting in Suazo's winning goal.

Honduras began its rally on Milton Nunez's successful penalty conversion in the 52nd minute. Eric Vallecillo was fouled inside the penalty area ending with Nunez's kick.

Julio Leon tied the match when his shot from 35 yards beat Guatemalan goalkeeper Ricardo Trigueno in the 69th minute.

Dwight Pazzarossi scored the game's opening goal in the 27th minute. Pazzarossi received Guillermo Ramirez's crossing pass from Guillermo Ramirez and beat Honduran goalkeeper Noel Valladares with a sliding shot which landed inside the right post.

Guatemala struck again on Marvin Avila's goal in the 32nd minute. An unmarked Avila found a loose ball deep in the left wing area and blasted a shot which landed high inside the far post.

Seeking to reduce the deficit, Honduras' Victor Bernardez unloaded an elevated shot from 40 yards which seemed headed inside the left post but Trigueno jumped to deflect Bernardez's blast in the 39th minute.

Avila had Guatemala's first scoring threat of the match in the ninth minute after Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares deflected Avila's arching shot from the left wing before it landed inside the near post.

Leon nearly put Honduras ahead 13 minutes later on a free kick from 30 yards which bounced off the outside netting on the left post.

Both teams will play the second set of the matches Tuesday in Atlanta. The winner of the points total series will be awarded the Central American Cup.

Also a few other friendlies on that day and since then:

Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 St. Vincent & Grenadines
Honduras 3-2 Guatemala (in USA)
Panama 1-0 El Salvador

Jamaica 2-1 Canada

Honduras 2-1 Guatemala

Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 Panama

Haiti 0-0 Cuba

Haiti 0-1 Cuba

Trinidad and Tobago won against weaker opposition, not really surprised, Cuba beating Haiti by a close margin isn't surprising either and neither is the Jamaica-Canada series (Canada won 1-0 at home in September). I think the big thing here is Honduras defeating Guatemala both home and away, which I don't think is much of a shock result, but it does show what I've believed for a while and that is that Honduras is better than Guatemala, despite Guatemala's decent showing in this past WCQ, where they ran qualification down to the wire whereas Honduras didn't even make it.
