2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup

Since qualifying has already started in the form of the UNCAF Club Championship and some qualifiers have already been decided, I thought it would be a good time to start a thread for the North American club championships.

Qualified:

North America

DC United (USA) - 2006 MLS Regular Season Points Champions
Pachuca CF (MEX) - 2006 Mexican Clausura Champions

Ongoing:

North America
2006 MLS Cup (Champion qualifies)
2006 Mexican Apertura (Champion qualifies)

Central America - UNCAF Club Championship

First Round (all scores aggregate)
Puntarenas (CRC) 6-1 Hankook Verdes (BEL)
Wagiya (BEL) 0-10 Municipal (GUA)
Marquense (GUA) 3-0 Plaza Amador (NIC)
Real Estelí (NIC) 1-2 Deportivo Saprissa (CRC)
San Francisco (PAN) 1-4 Victoria (HON)
Alajuelense (CRC) 3-1 Vista Hermosa (ELS)
Diriangén (NIC) 1-5 Olimpia (HON)
Marathón (HON) 3-1 Águila (ELS)

Quaterfinals
Alajuelense 0-5 Puntarenas
Deportivo Saprissa (1) - (0) Victoria
Municipal 1-4 Olimpia
Marathón 1-2 Marquense

Finalists and third-placed qualify for Champions Cup

Carribean Qualifying

No scores available yet, should be near quarterfinal stage of qualifying

Champion qualifies for tournament proper

---

The tournament proper will start in February and end in April.

Dates and venues finally announced...

I was a bit surprised to see the set up of this competition with only 9 countries being represented for the 15 teams.

True, more countries could be represented, but I suppose there is some reasoning behind it. It looks like the best clubs are coming in. Surinamer clubs are not participating due to the financial costs of the new mini-group format (previously it was home-and-away knockout).

Here is updated qualifying scheme:

Qualified:

North America

DC United (USA) - 2006 MLS Regular Season Points Champions
Pachuca CF (MEX) - 2006 Mexican Clausura Champions

Central America

Municipal Puntarenas (CRC) - 2006 UNCAF Club Championship Finalists
CD Olimpia (HON) - 2006 UNCAF Club Championship Finalists

Ongoing:

North America
2006 MLS Cup (Champion qualifies)
2006 Mexican Apertura (Champion qualifies)

Central America - UNCAF Club Championship

First Round (all scores aggregate)
Puntarenas (CRC) 6-1 Hankook Verdes (BEL)
Wagiya (BEL) 0-10 Municipal (GUA)
Marquense (GUA) 3-0 Plaza Amador (NIC)
Real Estelí (NIC) 1-2 Deportivo Saprissa (CRC)
San Francisco (PAN) 1-4 Victoria (HON)
Alajuelense (CRC) 3-1 Vista Hermosa (ELS)
Diriangén (NIC) 1-5 Olimpia (HON)
Marathón (HON) 3-1 Águila (ELS)

Quaterfinals (all scores aggregate)
Alajuelense 0-5 Puntarenas
Deportivo Saprissa 1-2 Victoria
Municipal 1-4 Olimpia
Marathón 1-2 Marquense

Semifinals (all scores aggregate)
Victoria 2-4 Olimpia
Puntarenas 2-0 Marquense

Third Place
Marquense-Victoria

Final
Puntarenas-Olimpia

Finalists and third-placed qualify for Champions Cup

Carribean Qualifying

I actually think the Islanders have a decent chance. I think it will be either them or W Connection who will take the group. I think Harbour View will take Group A, and San Juan Jabloteh Group D...can't really say for B, don't know much about Waterhouse...

Also, Houston Dynamo qualify for the Champions Cup as MLS Cup winners.

Results are a bit slow coming in on the CONCACAF site, but Baltimore Sportif (from Haiti) have qualified from Group B, beating Waterhouse FC (Jamaica) 2-0 and UNDEBA (Netherlands Antilles) 4-0, making the final game played between UNDEBA and Waterhouse inconsequential.

In Group C, Puerto Rico beat Hoppers FC (Antiuga & Barbuda) 3-1, but W Connection (Trinidad & Tobago) beat Hoppers 5-0, meaning that Puerto Rico needed a win against W Connection last night, otherwise W Connection would advance on goal difference.

In Group D, San Juan Jabloteh (T&T) beat Sap FC (Antigua & Barbuda) while SV Britannia (Aruba) and New Vibes (US Virgin Islands) drew 1-1. Results from SV Britannia-San Juan Jabloteh and New Vibes-Sap FC, played Thursday, are not available, and the round finishes out tonight with SV Britannia-Sap FC and New Vibes-San Juan Jabloteh.

Baltimore had already qualified from Group B, and UNDEBA and Waterhouse played to a 1-1 draw.

Puerto Rico unfortunately lost 0-1 to W Connection, meaning that W Connection tops Group C and advances.

In Group D, San Juan Jabloteh crushed SV Britannia 8-0 and Sap FC defeated New Vibes 3-1 in the second round of matches, and in the final matches, Sap FC beat SV Britannia 7-1 and San Juan Jabloteh beat New Vibes 5-0, meaning that San Juan advances.

The final group will consist of:

Harbour View FC (JAM)
Baltimore Sportif (HAI)
W Connection (TRI)
CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh (TRI)

I would imagine Harbour View are strong favorites, though it would really cool to see a Haitian team make it to the tournament proper, though they are probably the least likely to advance.

Houston can probably turn it around in the second leg, though Puntarenas could be tough to crack.

Olimpia 1-4 DC United, there should be no questions about this second leg.

Tomorrow is Pachuca-Marquense and the return legs of all four ties are next week.

Houston-Puntarenas has just started, let's see if Houston can overcome that deficit.

Houston 2-0 Puntarenas, Houston advances 2-0 on aggregate.

So we have DC United, Houston, Chivas, and Pachuca in the semis. Do we even need a SuperLiga?
