Goal record as Germany defeat Costa Rica

By Kevin Fylan

MUNICH, June 9 (Reuters) - Miroslav Klose struck twice on his 28th birthday to lead Germany to a 4-2 win over Costa Rica on Friday, getting the World Cup off to a record-breaking start.

The goal total broke the record for the most in the opening match of a finals tournament, surpassing the five scored in France's 4-1 triumph over Mexico in the inaugural competition in 1930.

"At such a mega event like the World Cup, we've got to put this behind us quickly," Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann told ZDF television.

"The players can have a little glass of beer tonight if they want but our focus has to turn right away to the next match (against Poland on Wednesday). We're happy with this start."

Full back Philipp Lahm curled in a right-footer from the edge of the box to give Germany a sixth-minute lead in the Group A match played before a 66,000 sellout crowd at the Allianz Arena.

Paulo Wanchope equalised before three-times former champions Germany, missing injured captain Michael Ballack, regained the lead in the 17th minute through Klose.

The Polish-born striker then made it 3-1 when he fired into the roof of the net in the 61st.

Wanchope added his second goal with 17 minutes to go before Torsten Frings grabbed Germany's fourth with a stunning long-range drive in the 87th.

The opening goal was a brilliant piece of work from Lahm. The 22-year-old hared forward to meet a loose ball near the right touchline and cut back inside.

DEFENDER BAMBOOZLED

That step was enough to bamboozle the covering defender and Lahm seized his chance to arrow a shot into the far corner, in off the top of the post.

Coach Juergen Klinsmann leaped for joy but he was soon howling at a defensive blunder.

Arne Friedrich dithered as the defence pushed out and Wanchope gratefully took a pass from Ronald Gomez to score.

Germany kept their heads and within five minutes they were in front again.

Bernd Schneider cut the ball back from the right for Bastian Schweinsteiger and the winger set up Klose, who scored a hat-trick in Germany's first match of the last World Cup.

Danny Fonseca planted a free header wide from a corner early in the second half for Costa Rica.

Klose then reacted quickly when his header was saved by keeper Jose Francisco Porras to rifle the ball home and give Germany breathing space.

Wanchope looked marginally offside when he notched his second goal.

"Despite losing, our team performed well and we won't back down from the task we face," said Wanchope. "We have to push on."

Italy crushed U.S. 7-1 on the first day of the 1934 World Cup but there was no opening game in that competition, with eight matches being played simultaneously.

Swedes and Trinidad and Tobago goalless

AFP
June 10, 2006

DORTMUND (AFP) - Trinidad and Tobago, making their World Cup finals debut, were holding Sweden to a 0-0 draw at half-time in their Group B clash.

In temperatures hovering around a sweltering 30 degrees, the Caribbean side got off to the worst possible start when goalkeeper Kelvin Jack injured his knee in the warm-up and was replaced by West Ham's Shaka Hislop.

Sweden had the best of the possession and Henrik Larsson just missed out on connecting with a smart cross from Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 22nd minute.

On the half-hour mark, Anders Svensson got in behind the defence but failed to connect with a long through ball.

Trinidad rarely threatened with skipper and former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke pushed back to bolster the defence, but Carlos Edwards brought a smart save out of Rami Shaaban, who himself had replaced the first choice keeper Andreas Isaksson, who was ruled out on Thursday.

Five minutes before the break, Christian Wilhelmsson forced Hislop into his first serious save of the day and the West ham veteran then flung himself to his right to keep out an Ibrahimovic drive.

Bravo double as Mexico down Iran

by Talek Harris
June 11, 2006

NUREMBERG (AFP) - Mexico scored twice in three second-half minutes to beat Iran 3-1 and give a massive boost to their bid to go past the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time.

The world number four and Group D seeds were held at 1-1 for 40 minutes by a battling Iran before Omar Bravo broke the deadlock with his second of the match.

Second-half substitute Zinha pounced on a mistake by defender Rahman Rezaei before sliding the ball to Bravo, who sided-footed it into the bottom left corner on 76 minutes.

Moments later Zinha rose unmarked to head a Mario Mendez cross past despairing Iran 'keeper Ebrahim Mirzapour, sparking delirium among the large contingent of Mexican supporters.

It was a vital victory for Mexico -- who have never bettered their two quarter-final appearances on home soil -- with games against Portugal and Angola to come.

The two teams had been delicately poised at 1-1 after an intriguing first half.

Mexico went 1-0 up after 28 minutes, Guillermo Franco rising to head a free-kick towards the back post where Bravo flicked in from close range.

But Iran hit back eight minutes later when Mexico goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez could only parry a close-range header to the feet of defender Yahya Golmohammadi, who prodded it into the roof of the net.

Vahid Hashemian had earlier missed a golden opportunity to open the scoring for Iran when, with the goal begging, he failed to connect with a perfect ball across the box.

Seconds later, Hashemian had a header clawed off the line by Sanchez.

At the other end, captain Rafael Marquez and Guillermo Franco also went close for Mexico.

Both sides rang the changes in the second half, with Mexico hauling off strikers Jared Borgetti and Franco and replacing them with Jose Fonseca and Zinha.

Bayern Munich man Ali Karimi was taken off by Iran after an unusually subdued 55 minutes.

It was Zinha who made the difference, setting up Bravo's second and scoring himself. But he could not provide a third for Bravo, who was on course for a Mexican hat-trick.

Meanwhile, controversy continued to haunt Iran as more than 1,000 protesters gathered in Nuremberg, a former Nazi heartland, to demonstrate against Iran's president who has described the Holocaust as a "myth".

Paraguay 2, Trinidad and Tobago 0

By JOSH DUBOW, AP Sports Writer
June 20, 2006

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany (AP) -- This own-goal went in Paraguay's favor and knocked Trinidad and Tobago right out of the World Cup.

Brent Sancho headed a ball past his own goalkeeper in the 25th minute and Trinidad and Tobago never recovered, losing 2-0 to Paraguay on Tuesday night in a game it needed to win to have any chance at advancing to the second round.

Trinidad came into its final first-round match with slim hopes of advancing, needing a win against already eliminated Paraguay, an England win over Sweden and help on goal differential. The Soca Warriors were unable to do their part and the rest did not matter.

Even a win wouldn't have helped T&T, since Sweden tied England 2-2 Tuesday night.

After starting its first World Cup appearance with a promising and surprising 0-0 draw against the Swedes, Trinidad and Tobago finished last in the group with only that one point.

The biggest problem was the Soca Warriors' inability to score. In fact, the only time a Trinidad player put the ball into the net in three matches it went into the wrong goal.

Nelson Cuevas broke free on a counterattack in the 86th minute to score Paraguay's second goal.

Trinidad did its best to generate offense, playing the final 59 minutes with three strikers and giving creative midfielder Russell Latapy his first chance to play this tournament in the second half.

Latapy created a spark, setting up Dwight Yorke with a good chance outside the penalty box and narrowly missing his shot from nearly the same spot. But Trinidad had only one shot on goal until Latapy's long attempt was easily saved by Aldo Bobadilla in the 79th minute.

It was a fitting break for Paraguay, which never recovered after losing its opener 1-0 to England on an early own-goal by captain Carlos Gamarra. The South Americans then lost 1-0 in the closing minutes to Sweden and were only playing for pride in the final match.

Paraguay finally got a break in this World Cup in the 25th minute. Roberto Acuna swung in a free kick from the left side that Julio Dos Santos got his head on. Sancho tried to clear it with his own header but instead redirected the ball past Kelvin Jack.

Sancho's dreadlocks played a big role in this World Cup for Trinidad. England's first goal against T&T came when Peter Crouch pulled on one Sancho's dreadlocks to create the space to head in a goal in the 83rd minute. Sancho had a rubber band around his hair this game to help prevent that from happening again, but it could do nothing to stop the own-goal.

Trinidad's desperation showed itself right after the first goal as coach Leo Beenhakker brought in a third striker in the 31st minute, subbing Kenwyne Jones for defender Avery John.

Beenhakker had to make a second substitution later in the half when forward Cornell Glen appeared to injure his left knee after a clean tackle by Gamarra. He brought in another forward, Evans Wise.

Paraguay put Trinidad on its heels after the goal and nearly added to its lead in the 36th minute but an apparent score by Denis Caniza was waved off by a late offsides flag. In extra time, Jack made a good save on a header by Nelson Valdez and Densill Theobald cleared a shot by Carlos Paredes off the goal line.

Both goalies were tested early in a matchup of two of the six teams who failed to score in the first two games. Jack made a diving stop in the second minute on a header from Roque Santa Cruz, and Bobadilla answered with his own diving stop on Glen's header about three minutes later.

Jack, who missed the first two games with an injured calf, got the start in place of Shaka Hislop, who played well the first two games.

What the hell do you know!!!! usa got a very difficult group, yet they outplayed the italians. Mexico should have one the group but they were unlucky, the opponents got very lucky. They had a very difficult second round match with Argentina(arguably the best team in the world cup), and they outplayed them for parts of the game. And Trinidad and tobago(supposedly the weakest team) tied the super swedes. Yet u say they deserve only there spots. Costa rica did not play that bad they scored two goals against the hosts!!!!!!But like alwasy they will get four well deserved spots no matter what!!!
