English interest in Wanchope

By Patricio Figueroa - Created on 1 Jan 2006

Former Derby and West Ham star Paulo Wanchope has received offers from Argentina and Mexico, although the tricky striker is keen to return to Europe and is being followed by an unnamed Premiership side.

The Costa Rican international took the surprising step to join Qatari outfit Al-Gharrafa upon leaving Spanish side Malaga in the summer, but he is now desperate to move back into the spotlight ahead of the World Cup.

Wanchope insists he has received an offer from Argentinian side Gimnasia, as well as an unnamed Mexican team, although his preference is to make a return to European football.

"I have been asked not to say the Mexican team name but on the other hand it has been said that Gimnasia La Plata from Argentina is very interested in me," said Wanchope.

"There is also some interest from an English team as usual but it seems to me that the most serious proposal in this moment comes from Argentina.

"My priority is to return to European football but if no team shows a real interest in me then I will think about the proposals that I have from Mexico and Argentina."

Portsmouth were linked with the striker whilst Alain Perrin remained in the Fratton Park hot-seat, and it remains to be seen whether new Pompey boss Harry Redknapp will move for the man he signed for West Ham back in 1999.

Wanchope's career comes full circle

Costa Rican club Herediano have signed former Manchester City, Derby and West Ham striker Paulo Wanchope for the upcoming Clausura tournament.

Wanchope returns to the club where he began his professional career in 1994 with a 4-1 win over Perez Zeledon.

'I still remember when coach Carlos Miloc ordered me to start warming up,' said Wanchope in remarks on his website. 'My heart missed a beat.'

Herediano will formally unveil the player later on Thursday.

'I felt it was a nice option, so I accepted to come here,' the 29-year-old explained.

'I love this club and I want to lend my experience to achieve important goals.'

Wanchope is back home. He's one of the best CONCACAF players, in my opinion.
