Great Idea: Cup Of The Americas

Since tha Copa América has decreased in importance since the CONMEBOL qualifiers are played in one big group and has been reduced to being a training ground for young substitute players, and since the Gold Cup is even pointless and nobody watches it, it would be a sensitive idea to organize one big biconfederational tournament called the Copa de las Américas. The winner of it would qualify to the Confederation's Cup as winner of its confederation and the team from the other confederation which has advanced the furthest in the competition will also be proclaimed the champion of its confederation and will therefore also go to the CC. The throphies of Champion of each confederation and of the biconfederational champions would be held in the same stadium after the final, with all of the involved teams present. The winner of the competition, logically, will be both biconfederational champions and champions of its confederation and will recieve two throphies. If two or more teams of the same confederation all go out at the same level of the competition and then no team of that confederation remains, then the champion of that confederation will be decided in a match between the two best of those teams (based on their tournament's points and goal average), which would be held the same day of the 3rd place match or inmediately before the final and will have its own ceremony.

Or you could forget about awarding 3 cups and instead awarding only 1, but still sending the other team to the CC.

8 teams from South America would qualify directly, based on the results of the last WC qualifying campaign. The 6 teams of the last CONCACAF hexagonal round will also be there. Perú, Bolivia, Canada and the rest of the Caribbean nations would play a short qualifying tournament in some Caribbean or Central American Nation or in Perú or up there in La Paz.

Or, to make it even simpler, the crappy caribbean nations and Canada would play their mini tournament and the top 2 of them would play playoff rounds against Perú and Bolivia.

It would be a great ocasion to prove if México and the USA are as good as they say they are.

Or is this a bad idea?

It's basically just Copa Americana with USA and Mexico. No one would still care.

The problem is that Argentina and Brazil are just too good compared to other American teams. Every time they take this competition seriously, one of the two is bound to win it.

There has to be more competition for a tournament being exiting. The reason why EURO finals and African Cup of Nations are taken more seriously than Copa Americana is that you never know who's gonna win it, there are so many equal teams.

Big games are easy than the other games, unfortunately. Every times we have the control the games, under the control the games, during the games we had the some possibilities, some big chances, some big okazyons, something like that but what can I do, sometimes? And….it’s the football, that’s the football, something happened. Everything is something happened. - Fatih Terim

Another problem is that it would be a logistical nightmare. With the MLS being played in the summer, the tournament would interfere with the running of the league. It'd be impossible to take the players from the MLS. The USA couldn't survive on a team made up of all European based players.

They could change their schedule.

If there are games that would be played in La Paz, then could Canada have their home games played in Whitehorse (Yukon), Yellowknife (Northwest Terretories), Iqaluit (Nunavut) or Alert (Ellesmere Island)?

If you are in favour of giving home advantage to Bolivia or Peru like that, how about giving us Canadians some locational advantages too?

La Paz is the Bolivian capital city. These Canadian places you mentioned are barely inhabited.

I meant it in terms of extreme cold weather. If the other games are at extreme altitude, then why not have that too? I am aware that there are hardly any people up there. Don't read too much into my previous post, I really am not taking this whole thread seriously.

But in terms of population, Edmonton has about 850,000 people, it is the capital of Alberta province, and it can get very cold too. They also have a natural grass stadium that holds 62,000 spectators, I guess that is the best Canada could offer in this scenario.

So what if they're barely inhabited? All the South American teams get a huge advantage for having a high elevation. In the USA and Canada, we use weather to our advantage. I remember when the USA beat Mexico 2-0 in Columbus during a snow storm. Without the cold, I don't think the US wins.

You're welcomed to do so if you're ready to play in Maracaibo and Barranquilla.

Oh man that would be an awesome tournament. I really want to see CONCACAF play the South American teams more. We are too close not to play each other more. Its sad. And if Canada can have their games in the extreme North...hmm...how about Barrow Alaska for our games? Its only about 400 miles above the arctic circle.

Plenty of room to build a nice stadium.

Hey, that doesn't sound like it's too far from Old Crow, Yukon.
Maybe the South Americans can travel between the two towns by dogsled?
