Borgetti in Europe

In breaking news, Borgetti has scored his first goal (of many to come) with Bolton Wanderers to give them their first victory in European match.

Hence my avatar.

Story.

Mexico striker Jared Borgetti's injury-time winner for Bolton Wanderers gave them victory in their first ever European match. The Trotters came from behind to beat Lokomotiv Plovdiv of Bulgaria 2-1 in the Uefa Cup first round, first leg.

Plovdiv took the lead against the run of play when Vladimir Ivanov crossed from the right for Boban Jancevski to score. But Bolton equalised with a header by El-Hadji Diouf from a Nicky Hunt cross.

And Borgetti made Bolton's historic night a happy one at the Reebok by netting from an acute angle at the death.

In a game that saw Hidetoshi Nakata make his first start for the Premiership club, with Hunt, Radhi Jaidi and Ricardo Gardner also drafted into the side, Bolton stuck to their tried and tested tactic of launching balls into the visitors' penalty area.

It was initially effective in unsettling the Plovdiv defence, and Bruno N'Gotty had a header cleared off the line from a deep Stelios Giannakopoulos cross.

But the Bulgarian side were threatening when they counter-attacked at pace, and after 28 minutes they took the lead, out-numbering Bolton on the break. Ivanov played a smart one-two with Ilami Halimi before speeding down the right wing and crossing for Jancevski to fire home to the delight of the handful of Plovidiv fans in the stadium.

Not until Bolton boss Sam Allardyce brought on Borgetti midway through the second-half to support Diouf in attack did Wanderers begin to look penetrative.

The equaliser duly came on 72 minutes, Hunt's cross being met with a full-length dive from Diouf that sent the ball into the bottom corner.

A draw looked probable until, with only seconds remaining, Nakata flicked on a Fabrice Fernandes cross and Borgetti drove it into the far corner as Plovdiv's players protested that Jancevski needed treatment and that Borgetti was offside.

The ref was unmoved and Wanderers won, leaving a relieved Allardyce to reflect: "We committed the ultimate crime as usual - we were in the ascendancy and dominating, then we switched off and got punished.

"It was poor defending and it made life extremely difficult from then on.

"We panicked a little bit and had to sort ourselves out tactically - but then we got the ball forward with more tempo and it paid off."

Allardyce continued: "It is very pleasing, even though the winning goal was in the last minute.

"It was a quality ball from Nicky Hunt to set up El-Hadji Diouf for the equaliser - and the winner is what we bought Jared Borgetti for - he's got us a very important goal.

"We needed not to concede and it's going to be difficult in Bulgaria - but we can sit back and play on the break at their place."

Here's a clip of the goal.

How true. I remember him at the 2002 WC, that header he had against Italy. It was a good goal.

HE has 1 goal in 60 minutes and Davies has played almost every game and he also has one goal.

Borgetti deserves more time

Well, that's the thing that happens in England. There is a big bias for players from the Isles. Tomasz Kuszczak saved West Brom from relegation last season and is now stapled to the bench because of Chris Kirkland.

Borgetti is a good player, he deserves to play in Bolton

Well, yea, no one is saying that he doesn't deserve it. I just stated that most English teams prefer to give players from the British Isles the benefit of the doubt before they go to another player. Look at Jerzy Dudek. He helps win the Champions League and gets benched.

Jared Borgetti has scored his 2nd goal in the UEFA Cup against Besiktas. I think Big Sam has found his new duo for the EPL Borgetti and El Hadji Diouf. Borgetti scored with his left foot after a great cross through the ground by Diouf.Did you guys notice who gave Diouf the pass? It was Borgetti after he jumped for the ball and headed it exactly to where Diouf was running towards...

Just saw it on the BBC. Heard that Diouf's cross was superb and that Borgetti did well.

Hopefully his success will bring more respect for CONCACAF.

Borghetti should be gettin loads of playing time, its just that they really are biased over there....they never give the North Americans a chance really....too bad he went to Europe at 31 years of age too, he shouldve tried his luck earlier.
