Mexico League System 2005/2006

Hi!

this year the Premiera Division in Mexico was played with 18 teams in one group. What is about next season? I heard about a league system with three groups?? Who can tell me some details in this subject??

Ok, I'm not that great with the system, as I don't speak Spanish fluently, but here goes...

There are 18 teams in the top division. The season is divided into two parts, Apertura and Clasura. For each part, there are six teams in each group. The top two teams in each group automatically advance to the quarter finals as well as the top two third place teams. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and final are all played over two legs. The winner of the final, is obviously, crowned the Champion. This year, America won the Clasura. Every year there can be two champions. However, last season, Pumas won both the Clasura and Apertura, becoming the first "bicampeonato".

I hope that helps!

Before Irapuato and Queretaro were removed from the League, it had a system of 4 groups of 5 teams. In that system, the top two teams in each group would advance to the quarterfinals.

Mexico has been using the dual champion system for at least ten years.

So is the first half of the season (where the teams play round robin) the Apertura, and the second half, where they play the cup style the Clasura? But wouldn't the Clasura be very short by comparison with the Apertura? I am really confused about this, so I'm glad someone asked this question.

Yea

Now there are only 18 teams, so they use three groups of six teams. Everything else works the same
