Pumas end losing run in Mexico, Veracruz win again

By Armando Cesar Tovar

MEXICO CITY, Oct 3 (Reuters) -

Defending champions UNAM ended a run of four successive defeats in the Mexican championship with a 3-2 victory over Sinaloa at the weekend, while surprise package Veracruz won again.

Bolivian striker Joaquin Botero and midfielders Jaime Lozano and Ismael Iniguez shared the goals for the Pumas, who also claimed their first home win of the Apertura championship.

Mexican international striker Jared Borgetti scored both goals for Sinaloa, the second from a penalty.

The Pumas, coached by outspoken former Real Madrid and Mexico striker Hugo Sanchez, are fifth in Group One with nine points, while Sinaloa lead the same group with 11 points.

Rank outsiders Veracruz overcame a torrential downpour as they continued their unprecedented run by beating nine-man UAG 1-0, their eighth win in a row.

Mario Rosales gifted the Red Sharks the points when he headed an intended clearance into his own goal in the sixth minute.

UAG had Honduran midfielder Danilo Turcios sent off in the 27th minute for violent play followed by Uruguayan Marcelo Tejera in the 74th for a second bookable offence.

BLANCO INSPIRATION

The Sharks, whose run has been inspired by volatile Mexican striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco, top Group Three with 24 points from nine games.

The Tecos are second in Group One, behind Sinaloa on goal difference.

Paraguayan striker Jose Cardozo scored a hat-trick as Toluca hammered UNL 4-1 while Guadalajara and America drew 1-1 in the meeting of the country's biggest two clubs -- both of whom have been off form.

Guadalajara, who field only Mexican players, went ahead through Omar Bravo in the 56th minute at the Jalisco stadium.

America, who boast an expensively-assembled team of foreign stars, equalised through Jesus Mendoza in the 88th minute to collect their first since Mario Carillo replaced former Argentina coach Oscar Ruggeri as coach.

America are sixth and bottom of Group One while Guadalajara are fifth in Group Two.
