Ruggeri's problems mount as America lose again

MEXICO CITY, Sept 17 (Reuters) -

Chiapas sent big-spending America crashing to another defeat in the Mexican championship, increasing the pressure on their beleagured coach Oscar Ruggeri.

America, who have won only once in five games since the former Argentina defender took over, lost 2-1 and slipped to fifth out of six teams in Group One of the Clausura championship. They are already struggling to make the knockout stages.

The Eagles were quickly in trouble after Mexican international defender Duilio Davino put through his own net in the sixth minute of Wednesday's game in Tuxtla Gutierrez following a corner.

Chiapas went further ahead early in the second half when defender Melvin Brown headed home following another corner.

America had Argentine defender Horacio Ameli sent off for a second bookable offence in the 73rd minute before Aaron Padilla pulled a goal back with 13 minutes to go.

"There's no doubt that I'm responsible for the defeats," said Ruggeri, who played in the 1986, 1990 and 1994 World Cups. "Today, they beat us from dead ball situations."

America's two main signings, Claudio Lopez and Djalminha, both played 45 minutes each.

Brazilian midfielder Djalminha, who was substituted at halftime in Sunday's home defeat by Puebla, this time started on the bench and came on after the break to replace Argentina international Lopez.

Chiapas stayed fourth in Group Three.

Group Two leaders Puebla kept up their unbeaten record with a 1-0 win over Santos Laguna. Gabriel Caballero, born in Argentina and a naturalised Mexican, scored the winner.

Although they have the best record in the tournament, Puebla are also fighting relegation which is decided over three seasons.

America end barren streak in Mexico, UNAM lose again

MEXICO CITY, Sept 19 (Reuters)

- Big-spending America ended a four-match winless run by beating Monterrey 1-0 in the Mexican championship on Sunday while champions UNAM lost for the second time in five days.

America, whose new signings include Argentine striker Claudio Lopez and former Brazil international Djalminha, lifted the pressure on Argentina coach Oscar Ruggeri after their second win in six games.

Mario Perez scored the winner in the 62nd minute shortly after replacing Lopez while Djalminha made a brief appearance as a late substitute.

The Eagles moved up to third place in Group One of the Apertura championship's qualifying stage.

UNAM, beaten 3-2 at home by Veracruz last Wednesday, dropped to fifth in the same group after losing 3-1 away to UNL.

Uruguayan Diego Alonso gave the Pumas a halftime lead but the Tigers hit back after the break with two goals from Argentina Andres Silvera and one from his compatriot Walter Gaitan.

Veracruz went top of Group Three with a 6-2 demolition of Atlante while Cruz Azul, the pre-championship favourites alongside America and UNAM, remained winless after losing 4-2 at home to Guadalajara.

Cruz Azul coach says sorry for poor run

By Armando Cesar Tovar

MEXICO CITY, Sept 20 (Reuters) -

Cruz Azul coach Luis Fernando Tena, whose club boast one of the strongest squads in Mexico, has said sorry for his team's poor start to the championship.

Cruz Azul, known as the "Sky Blue Machine" or the "Cement Mixers", have failed to win any of their first six games in the Apertura championship. They were beaten 4-2 by Guadalajara at the weekend and have only one point.

"I'm sorry for the directors who have put their confidence in us and I'm sorry for Cruz Azul's thousands of followers, but we're going to battle on," Tena told reporters on Monday.

Tena's squad includes Cesar Delgado and Luciano Figueroa, who were part of the Argentina squad which won the gold medal at last month's Athens Olympics and the squad which finished runners-up to Brazil in July's Copa America, as well as two more Argentines, Marcelo Delgado and Federico Lussenhoff.

The coach backed his players and denied he was considering resigning.

"I accept the responsibility and I still think we have a very good squad, one of the best in our championship," said Tena.

"I've no complaints about the players, they've given everything."
