Mexican Apertura 04/News-Results

Changes Afoot At America 25/06/04

Traditional Mexican power America have started cleansing the outfit by parting ways with coach Leo Beenhakker for a second time and transfer listing El Tricolores hero Cuauhtemoc Blanco.

"From today, Mr. Leo Beenhakker is no longer part of the coaching staff of this club," read an official club statement.

The former Ajax and Real Madrid boss saw the disappointing side knocked out in the championship quarterfinals by Toluca.

<<Queretaro <<
Have they actually agreed ?
A couple of days ago the mood was "thank you but no thanks. We'll have to settle this 'relegation' business on the pitch"

According to net sources Blanco has signed with Veracruz. In a press conference he boasted that he is aiming for the championship. Perhaps a bit of exaggeration, but Liguilla place should be within reach. It is also reported that Jared Borgetti is negotiating with Sinaloa :-(. I'll just hope that he'll stay with Santos.

And just a hunch. I think that Monterrey may be pretty strong next season. IMO they have a good squad and with the arrival of Herrera also a competent new manager, so perhaps the team will finally perform.

'Big Head' (Cabezon) takes America job

MEXICO CITY, June 29 (Reuters) - Former Argentina captain Oscar Ruggeri was named coach of Mexico's richest club America on Tuesday.
America's official website said Ruggeri, a rugged former central defender known in his homeland as Cabezon (Big Head), reached an agreement with the club after negotiations with Daniel Passarella, another former Argentina captain, broke down.

Ruggeri replaces Dutchman Leo Beenhakker, who left the club after they were knocked out of the Mexican Clausura championship and the South American Libertadores Cup in quick succession last month.

Several players also departed, including volatile Mexican international striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco.

Ruggeri, who played for Argentina at the 1986, 1990 and 1994 World Cups, was his country's most capped international until his total of 98 appearances was eclipsed by Diego Simeone three years ago.

He began his coaching career in Mexico with San Lorenzo before taking charge of Guadalajara, who claim to be the country's most popular club and field only local players.

In the last 18 months, however, Ruggeri has had three unhappy coaching experiences.

He began last year in charge of Guadalajara's arch-rivals UAG, but left after losing his first six games.

He then took over at Argentine club Independiente but resigned less than four months later after being jeered and insulted by fans at a home game.

At the end of last year, he moved to Spanish second division club Elche but was fired in May after 20 games in charge.

Salas unsure of future Friday 2 July, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus owned striker Marcelo Salas is looking for a new club after his River Plate loan deal expired.

The Chilean spent last season with the Argentine side, the club where he made his name in the 1990s.

The 29-year-old was hoping to make the move permanent but he played rarely for the outfit after a string of injury problems.

Now he is considering his next move given the fact that he no longer features in the plans of Juventus.

"Even though I haven't been in Europe for a year, I'm still getting lots of calls," said the forward.

"That means that what I did in my five years in Italy (with Lazio and Juventus) made a big impression," he continued.

"I haven't decided anything yet. I'm going to unwind, clear my head and we'll know in the next few days if there's anything new. I'm in no hurry and calm about my situation."

Clubs rumoured to be interested in the player include Real Mallorca, Paris SG and Mexican outfit America. Numerous sides in Qatar and Saudi Arabia are also assessing bids.

Lopez joins America

Lopez set for Mexico

Wednesday, 28 July 2004

Argentina star Claudio Lopez is free to sign for Mexican outfit America after reaching an agreement with Lazio on the remainder of his contract.
America have been in talks with the former Valencia star for the past few days, but were unable to conclude a deal, as he was still under contract to the Biancoceleste.

Lopez will join a host of foreign stars at the Mexico City-based outfit, as the team already have the likes of Reynaldo Navia, Ricardo Valenzuela, Horacio Ameli and Djalminha on their books.

The 30-year-old has spent the last eight years in Europe, but has failed to recapture his best form in Serie A following a successful spell at El Mestalla.

With Lopez commanding a wage of €2.5 million a year with Lazio, the club were keen to offload him, although it is believed he has agreed a similar package with America.

Club America beats Everton in Texas Cup

August 1, 2004

HOUSTON (AP) -- Club America of the Mexican Premier League defeated Everton of the English Premier League 3-1 in the finale of the Texas Cup Sunday.

The Mexico City team scored first when Francisco Torres took a pass from Reinaldo Navia and nailed a shot from 15 yards out in the 19th minute.

Club America's Pavel Pardo scored from just outside the penalty box for a 2-0 lead in the 57th minute.

Everton's Marcus Bent scored on a header in the 89th minute but Rodrigo Valenzuela's breakaway goal put Club America ahead by the final margin.

Club America won the Texas Cup championship, 6-3. Everton, which beat Pachuca 5-2 on Thursday, played without standout Wayne Rooney, who did not make the trip because of a right foot injury.

Atlas defeats Guatemala 4-1 in L.A

August 9, 2004

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (AP) -- Brazilian forward Robert de Pinho scored four goals to lead Atlas of Guadalajara to a 4-1 victory over the Guatemalan National team in an exhibition game Sunday at Weingart Stadium in East Los Angeles.

De Pinho scored his first goal in the 24th minute, after the Guatemalan defensive line committed a series of errors. His second goal came ten minutes later, after a sprint down the right wing, when he blasted a right footed shot past Miguel Angel Klee.

The third goal for de Pinho came in the 40th minute, after Guatemalan defender Pablo Melgar tried to dribble the ball past Daniel Osorno, who stole the ball and fed it to de Pinho.

Dwight Pezzarossi scored for Guatemala, on a header at the 68th minute.

Guatemala next faces Trinidad and Tobago August 11, in Guatemala City. World Cup Qualifying resumes for Guatemala when they face off against Canada August 18 in Bunbury, British Columbia.

Sunday afternoon's game was the second of a two-game series. Guatemala defeated El Salvador Friday at R-F-K Stadium in Washington
