OFFICIAL Euro 2008 group

Group D:
Greece
Sweden
Spain
Russia

Much the same as Euro 2008, bar portugal.

Unlike 2004 though, Greece need to get the better of Russia to have a chance in this group because Sweden always do well and Spain..well who knows

We can't really complain. All teams are strong but playable.

We have chances to go through for sure.

Good group. We can't complain about that.
It's not the easier but also not the harder of the 4 groups.
We have the chance to pass but we need to win the Russians this time.

If Russia didn't have Hiddink, I'd consider them an ideal opponent - inexperienced, mentally weak, coming off a weak qualifying round. But with Hiddink everything changes... he's such a master of tactics and mentality. They can appear really strong.

Sweden is the usual solid force. Talented, hard, never give up... it's going to be a really challenge to play them. And of course, they have players like Ibrahimovic and Kallstrom who can win a game on their own. Having said that, they are the team that most suits our style of play. More so than Russia, even though Sweden is stronger than them.

Spain is scary if you look at the names... I mean, they have an attack with Villa and Torres which is just amazing. But they don't have a great coach and they tend to **** up under pressure.

Anyway, I think we can beat Russia, take a draw or beat Sweden and get a draw against Spain. That should see us through.

But there is no question we need to be at our best. We have to play to advance otherwise we will be beaten by all of them.

We did okay. We can pass for sure. We passed the same group plus Portugal for Sweden (ie harder).

As long as Larsson doesnt have another comeback I think Sweden is beatable. Russia even with Hiddink are the weakest in the group. Spain are the notorious chokers and underachievers.

Not a bad group!

Sweden scare me, they are a tough team but I think it will end in a draw, although I can see us winning if we are on form.

Spain can be brilliant or the chokers they usually are, we shall see. Game can go either way, but again, it may end in a stalemate.

The Russians I don't generally rate, but they have Hiddink so we have to take them seriously. I wonder who will come out on top, Otto or Guus. Ideally we have to take 3 pts from them...

Good group, could have been worse. Just a bit boring to play 2 of the same teams as last time. Would have been more fun to swap Spain for Portugal though.

Pretty good group. You had a similar but tougher group in '04 and if you play with the same quality as you did then, you should be able to get out again. Good luck.

Tue 10 June 20.45 GRE v SWE Salzburg Wals-Siezenheim Salzburg

Sat 14 June 20.45 GRE v RUS Salzburg Wals-Siezenheim Salzburg

Wed 18 June 20.45 GRE v ESP Salzburg Wals-Siezenheim Salzburg

Our home for the group stage. Thankfully the artificial pitch will be replaced with real grass for the tournament. Its a nice stadium, and I'm glad that unlike Euro 2004 the team will stay in one city sans the travel.

Greece's schedule is perfect. Since Spain is their last opponent and Spain is the favorite for first place, then it would be to Greece's benefit to root for Spain against Sweden and Russia in their first 2 matches so that Spain would have little or nothing to play against Greece in the final match and to also push back Sweden and Russia.

During the draw between Greece and Holland to determine who would be atop Groups C and D, respectively, Holland wound up in Group C and Greece in Group D. If Greece was drawn in Group C, they would have faced Italy, France and Romania instead. It's also a small advantage that Pot 1 teams, including Greece, will play all their games in one city whereas the other teams will have to travel. Greece will play its games in Salzburg.

The Denmark NT coach, Morton Olsen, said in the German magazine, KICKER, that Spain and Greece are the favorites to pass

In RED = To Win Group
In BLUE = To Qualify From Group

GROUP D
Spain 1.75 1.13
Greece 4.50 2.10
Sweden 6.00 2.35
Russia 6.50 2.40

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Greece v Russia

*Dmitri Kirichenko and Dmitri Bulykin were on target inside the opening 17 minutes as the Russians overcame Greece 2-1 in Faro-Loule in 2004. Greece sneaked through, however, and the rest is history.

*The teams qualified together for the 1994 FIFA World Cup from the same group. Greece finished top, and unbeaten, after winning the final qualifier 1-0 against Russia in Athens. It was the first appearance at the competition for both countries.

*In the qualifying tournament for EURO '96™, Russia beat Greece home and away to advance to England at their expense.

Greece v Sweden

*The teams have never met in a UEFA European Championship or FIFA World Cup but they did face each other at the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp, Sweden running out 9-0 winners.

*In five friendly meetings since then, Sweden have failed to record a victory. The most recent encounter, on 20 August 2003, brought Greece's first success on Swedish soil as they overcame their hosts 2-1 in Norrkoping.

Greece v Spain

*Greece and Spain drew 1-1 in the 2004 finals, Fernando Morientes opening the scoring for Spain and Angelos Charisteas equalising for Greece.

*The two countries also met in qualifying for that tournament. Each team registered an away victory, with Greece surprisingly topping the group and forcing Spain to qualify via a play-off against Norway.

*Spain won a friendly at the start of this season 3-2 in Salonika thanks to two goals from David Silva, his second coming three minutes into added time.
