Portugal, Spain and France are ussually formidable oppenents in the youth tournaments, although greece and underdogs seem to go well together, basketball wc, euros etc etc

Good luck Greece

How is this U19's EURO Tournament in Austria run? Is it 2 groups of 4 with top 2 in each group playing each other in the Semi Finals or is it straight knockout matches? Has Greece ever gone this far at U19's level? I'm not sure, but I think it was our U21's National Teams that have gone all the way to the final against France in 1987 & maybe in 1996 against Spain.

We reached the U-21 Euro final in 1998 and lost from Spain cause ****ing Lakis wasted 3 one-on-ones with the Spanish goalkeeper. But the team still delivered in the future, just check the roster:

Goalkeepers: Elefteropoulos (Olympiakos), Sotiris Lymperopoulos (Ethnikos)
Defenders: Goumas (PAO), Alexopoulos (PAO), Mavrogenidis (Olympiakos), Antzas (Xanthi), Kostoulas (Kalamata), Koulakiotis (PAOK), Koltzos (Athinaikos), Dellas (Aris), Dermitzakis (OFI)
Midfielders: Sfakianakis (Olympiakos), Basinas (PAO), Lakis (Paniliakos), Pantelis Konstantinidis (Apollon Athinon), Stoltidis (Iraklis), Karagounis (Apollon Athinon)
Forwards: Nikos Lymperopoulos (Kalamata), Lampriakos (Apollon Athinon), Sotiris Konstantinidis (Iraklis)

Most of them really good players.

Yup, and alot of them went on to become European champions or feature prominently in the qualifying campaign.

Goes to show you. Everyone spoke about Portugal's "golden generation" that year, but in fact this one hoisted more silverware.

Didn't he play against Georgia and Albania in March 2005?

Stoltidis, Zikos, and for a long time Lyberopoulos. Mysteries as to why they were/are absent. Zikos had a bust up with Otto they say. Lybe I have no idea why he was left out for so long, and Stoltidis only Otto knows.

The 1998 u-21 team developed together and progressed together that is one reason for their success.

GREECE 1-0 PORTUGAL

Nikolaos Nioplias, Greece coach
It was a fair result; Portugal were very dangerous from crosses, especially in the first half and we lost our way a bit after the goal but that's normal. We wanted to protect the result and it's natural you become more nervous then while some players picked up yellow cards so they had to be more careful and were a bit afraid. It's good to start with a win, it gives the team confidence; they knew they were a good team and now they have more evidence of that. We played well today but we'll have to do so again on Wednesday if we want another win.

Edgar Borges, Portugal coach
My players are heroes to play in such warm weather. The match was very even, we both had chances and Greece played as we expected - they're a very strong team. Our first-half strategy was to calm the match and to play harder in the second half, make the ball do the work. However, we had to try everything to win the match after falling behind; Greece had more luck than us in the end but the fairest result would have been a draw. Small details made the difference today; Greece are a good team but they had more luck in the final third of the pitch because they scored a goal and we didn't even though the teams had the same amount of chances. Their goalkeeper made two great saves and we have to underline that.

Rehhagel will be at the Wednesday match with Austria...
