Athens stages ticketing launch
Thursday, 1 February 2007

A special ceremony will be held in Athens on Monday to launch the start of ticket applications for the 2007 UEFA Champions League final.

Distinguished guests
The event will take place at 12.30 local time (11.30CET) at the Maroussi Town Hall, the district in the Greek capital where the Olympic Stadium is based. Maroussi mayor Giorgios Patoulis will be present along with Vassilis Gagatsis, the president of the Hellenic Football Federation (HFF) and the UEFA Executive Committee member Marios N Lefkaritis.

Latest news
Gagatsis will also talk about the latest preparations for the 23 May final, which will be the first European showpiece in the city since the venue was rebuilt to stage the 2004 Olympic Games. The stadium previously provided the backdrop to the UEFA Champions League final of 1993/94, when AC Milan were 4-0 winners against FC Barcelona. Media representatives wishing to attend should contact the HFF either by email: [email protected], or by phone: +30 210 9370328, or by fax: +30

Final ball has Athens flavour
Thursday, 8 March 2007

The official ball for the 2007 UEFA Champions League final in Athens on 23 May has been unveiled by UEFA and adidas.

Greek inspiration
The Finale Athens, featuring state of the art technology, was displayed at a special ceremony in the Greek capital this afternoon. The design is based on the popular UEFA Champions League starball logo and the blue and white of the Greek national flag. Greece coach Otto Rehhagel, who also has plenty of experience in Europe's premier club competition, was a special guest at the launch.

'Best performance'
adidas claim the 14-panel design "creates a perfectly round ball allowing great accuracy and control", adding: "The combination of the revolutionary panel shape, a new carcass construction and the thermal bonding technology provide this official match ball for the final with the best performance qualities ever." The company has been supplying balls for the UEFA Champions League since the 2001/02 season and will continue to do so until at least 2009.

Home honour
Both finalists will receive the Finale Athens ball for use in their pre-match training in advance of the 23 May showpiece at the Olympic Stadium. The team that comes out on top in the final will also have the exclusive right to use the ball for home matches as they defend the prestigious trophy next season, as was the case with FC Barcelona this term. The draw for the latter rounds of the UEFA Champions League will take place in Athens tomorrow.

Athens calls on 20,000-strong police force for final

Helena Smith in Athens
Saturday April 21, 2007
The Guardian

Greece's entire 20,000-strong police force will be deployed to prevent violence at the Champions League final in Athens next month, with more than 30,000 fans from the UK expected to attend the match featuring either Liverpool or Chelsea, possibly against Manchester United.

Police squads from across the country will be bussed in to form a security cordon around the city centre ahead of the May 23 game. Officers, including riot police, will be stationed outside hotels, cafes and bars that British supporters are expected to frequent with officials intimating that alcohol consumption will also be curbed. To "free up" other personnel, trainee cadets are to be tasked with traffic policing and other mundane duties on the day.

Greek government and security officials, who are believed to have designed the measures in collaboration with British officers, will fly to the UK on Monday to hold further talks with counterparts from the Association of Chief Police Officers, which oversees policing abroad. Officials said Greek police would also be "working closely" with travel companies and charter flights bringing in fans.

The draconian steps - on a scale with those enacted during the 2004 Athens Olympics - were unveiled as Greece's chief of police, Lt Gen Anastassios Dimoschakis, urged English fans not to travel unless they had a "magic ticket".

Greek police said their worst nightmare was if Liverpool or Chelsea ended up facing Manchester United in the final. The first leg of United's semi-final against Milan is at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

"We advise anyone who cannot get their hands on a ticket not to travel to our country," Dimoschakis told reporters after meeting with other security chiefs and the mayor of Athens. "Security will not just start at the airport in Athens but in [the supporters'] home countries."

Greece's no-nonsense right-wing government announced last week that it would also upgrade and install more security cameras at the 70,000-seat Olympic stadium where the game will be played.

The final is seen as a prelude to the increased security measures the government plans to take to curb domestic hooliganism following the stabbing to death of a 25-year-old Greek football fan in Athens last month.

me and my Greek friend have come to a conclusion. Liverpool and AC Milan were in the 2005 final together in Istanbul, and now Athens. So according to him, thats some sort of sign that Greece or Turkey will win the European Championship and World Cup. but seriously, this final will be thrilling. cant wait.

Is it true that if you don't use it, you lose it?
