FIFA suspend Greek Football Federation

Fifa suspend Greece

Fifa have suspended European champions Greece from all international competition with immediate effect.

Fifa's emergency committee has ruled that the Hellenic Football Federation is not in line with the principles of their statutes, with regards to their independence and ability to make independent decisions.

The Greek authorities have now missed the deadline to provide a law change that would enable the HFF to work in line with Fifa's rules.

The decision now means that Greece's proposed friendly with England on August 16 at Old Trafford - Steve McClaren's first game in charge of The Three Lions - is in doubt.

Fifa confirmed their action in a statement: "In September 2005, the executive committee gave the HFF a deadline of July 15, 2006, to obtain from the Greek government an amendment to the national law on sports in order to enable the association to be in conformity with the Fifa statutes and the relevant Uefa regulations.

"In spite of repeated warnings from both Fifa and Uefa, the commitment expressed by Greek government representatives to amend the law on sport to irrevocably recognise that football matters can only be decided by the HFF and its subordinated football structures has not been respected.

"In fact, the recently-presented draft of a new law on professional leagues constitutes another example of interference from the government in football affairs.

"Therefore, the emergency committee has determined that the deadline would not be met by the HFF and that the suspension of this federation was necessary."

---------------

Obviously it probably won't stick, and they will get their shit straight real quick (hopefully), but nontheless we have CORRUPT IDIOTS running things.

Now what if they have mucked around to much and FIFA sticks with this, can you imagine.... No Europe for Greek clubs, no qualifying with the NT, and so on.... all because of idiots running things.

I hope your government will fix the problem before the deadline, and that it would have only been like a huge warning. It would be disappointing not to see Greek clubs and NT playing this season.

When the going get tough, only the tough get going.

The last paragraph states "suspended", not "expelled", so this is temporary.

[SIZE="1"]AEK 2007/2008=REAL Champions win on the field, not in the courts. Euro 2004 champs. Eurobasket 2005 and 1987 champs. FIBA WC 2006 Silver Medal. FIBA WC U19 Gold Medal 1995. Non-qualification equals no progressAlexander

Can anybody explane, what excatly means this meddeling by government? I mean, my common sense says that in many things FIFA has to bend to any government.

Greek football enlists FIFA backing in "political conflict" with government

ATHENS, June 20 (AFP) - The Greek football federation (EPO) on Monday enlisted the backing of world football governing body FIFA to resolve a "political conflict" with the Greek government that has resulted in a state fund freeze.

FIFA President Joseph Blatter held an emergency meeting on Monday with EPO President Vassilis Gagatsis in Zurich to discuss the "precarious situation" in Greek football, citing "continuing political conflicts" that are preventing the federation from focusing on football issues, a FIFA statement said.
"The Hellenic Football Federation has my full support," Blatter said on Monday. "It is disappointing because the federation behind the reigning European champions should be a role model organisation, but this is not the case.
"We will decide in the coming weeks what the appropriate action to take will be," Blatter said.

According to local media reports, the Greek conservative government last autumn tried to gain political control of EPO, whose leadership was elected under the previous socialist administration.
The Monday FIFA meeting primarily addressed attempts by regional football unions to challenge the EPO leadership, which was comfortably re-elected in October.

Tension between Gagatsis and Greek sports minister George Orfanos has also spilled into financial matters, with EPO accusing the ministry of starving it of state funds.

When the sports ministry recently released its federation funding programme for 2005, it left EPO out.
"This systematic financial embargo, for which Mr Orfanos is solely responsible, makes a successful Greek bid for Euro 2012 extremely unlikely," EPO said on June 9.

The federation is also disappointed with the bonus money given by the state to Greece's victorious Euro 2004 squad, which translated into 170,000 euros per player, an EPO spokesperson told AFP
This is 1 year ago.

It's money. Gagatsis (Greek FA head) met with Blatter some days ago and it's widely believed he asked for FIFA's support in this way.
