“The Red-Black Devil of Europe” Belgium was one of the strongest team in the Europe during the 1980s that was their golden era replacing Netherlands as the representative of Benelux group that was down in the same time. Even they had a few world-class stars, The system of the team helped them qualifying for WC 6 consecutive tournaments during the 1980s to the 1990s. Formation XI

Explanation of Formation

Many top teams in the Europe maybe envy Belgium about their great goalkeepers. Preud’Homme beat Marie-Pfaff as a starter for his better performance in FIFA World Cup. Eric Gerets is the most outstanding player in defensive line as right-back. To find the great Belgian LB, It has to turn back in the 1910s. Swartenbroeks was one of the best defenders in that era. Verbiest was a strong and very reliable defender, stand alongside Vincent Kompany who has been selected in PFA team of the year twice times.. Van Moer will be a holding midfielder while Scifo is a playmaker of the team. Cuelemans’ style is versatile anpugh to stand as left-winger. Jurion is on right-wing. Van Himst is the most expected player in forward line. Raymond Braine is selected as a finisher.

Marc Wilmots was so famous due to his preofessionalism on the career.

But his technique was just average. Kicker Magazine mostly ranked him in national level below international-class only.

Thanks for the work Dearman Great job

Gerets played for Milan as well, Kompany for HSV

otherwise a great list, although Nilis should be in it as well

Wilmots won the UEFA cup single-handedly with Schalke 04, i think he deserves some credit for that

Nilis was always better at clublevel than for Belgian NT.

Armand Swartenbroeks

According to this site, referenced by the RSSSF, Swartenbroeks won 53 caps. If you look at the line-ups for Belgiums games you'll see he's listed at right back for virtually all of them. I don't know if he could play on the left and it's likely that a full back in the 1910s and 20s would be more of a central defnder today anyway. I'd have him alongside Verbeist.
What about Jean Thissen as left back?

Short answer:

Names you could reconsider are Swartenbroeks, Meeuws, Scifo. I don't know why you included Swartenbroeks, sometimes you hear also other names.

Published top 5 lists that I know of:

1) Paul van Himst
2) Rik Coppens
3) Jan Ceulemans
4) Wilfried van Moer
5) Jef Mermans
6) Laurent Verbiest

1. Paul Van Himst
2. Jan Ceulemans
3. Wilfried Van Moer
4. Jef Mermans
5. Raymond Braine
6. Rik Coppens
7. Jef Jurion
8. Laurent Verbiest
9. Jean-Marie Pfaff
10. Erik Gerets
11. Michel Preud'homme

I think it is safe to say that Van Himst is the unchallenged number one and Ceulemans a safe number two. Ceulemans is also the best Belgian footballer I've seen playing, in my opinion. Ceulemans is sometimes challenged by Rik Coppens, especially among older generations I think.

Armand Swartenbroeks is the only big name in the 1920 Olympic Game Champion squad. So, he seems to be one of the greatest legends in history of Belgian football.

I know Scifo was not successful at Inter Milan but he came back to play very well with Auxerre and Torino. It is very surprised he is not good enough in top 10.

Why do you think that? He wasn't the captain in 1920.

An other great name is Louis van Hege.

Anyhow, Belgium has had more good and appreciated left-backs in their history like Maurice Martens.

Scifo was a great talent and his 1990 performance is a reason why he is known abroad but he had the image that he never lived up to expectations and that is also why he had only one top five golden shoe nomination in his entire career.
He received some criticism in 1986 World Cup.

Stylish and technically gifted footballer, that is certainly true.

He received some criticism in 1986 World Cup.

Stylish and technically gifted footballer, that is certainly true.
Oh, OK I just omit Louis Van hege despite I named him in honourable mention. Even though, Why do you think Swartenbroeks is not that great as there seems to be no evidence of his record of playing and he is one of a few famous legendary defenders in the 1910s to early 1920s.

Maurice Martens won a Belgian golden shoe is interesting but why he won just 26 caps ?

Maybe he is that great but he is not as often mentioned as Van Hege. As far as I know, Van Hege was the icon of that generation.

Maurice Martens had in the mid-70s a very high peak. He was together with Boskamp and Polleunis one of the key players that made the small club RWDM champion of Belgium. His peak-performance was very high. Boskamp is sometimes still mentioning him as one of the best left-backs he has ever seen.

It is correct that he had only 26 caps. For a part that can be explained by his background as RWDM player, he had to overcome a bit of skepticism because he did not play for one of the bigger clubs. Another reason is that Belgium did not play many international games during his peak years. Belgium played between 1972 and 1978 only 32 international games.

Furthermore: Martens was until 1974 challenged by Jean Thissen and Jean Dockx for the left-back position; two players that are also mentioned in the player of the year lists.

And from 1977 onwards he was challenged by Michel Renquin. He lost his place due to an injury. He was then 31 years old and never reached the same heights again.

But it is beyond doubt that his peak was very high, that he was a key player of that championship winning team. Also telling for his qualities is that he was selected for the 1970WC squad without having a single cap before.
