The Shrinking League

In the most recent reform only 24 (professional) clubs will remain, including 2nd division ... most likely +/- 4 clubs will keep struggling to comply with the very strict licensing regulations (they're looking into separate licensing regulations for 2nd division) ... promotion from amateur football will be hard ... expecting those clubs to decline promotion because they'd go bankrupt trying to comply ... it could end up being almost a closed league.

The competition format will have to be finalised before the end of June ... probably it will roughly be Plancke's proposal: 16 top tier clubs and a 2nd division of only 8 clubs.

8 lol

Will Antwerp remain?
I see their old boy John Bostock is having fun at Leuven.

Might as well merge them then or do 2 x 12

Last I heard Antwerp's license dossier needed work ... don't keep track of them TBH.

2 x 12 was also proposed ... but so was a single Pro League of 20 clubs, etc. ... we'll get more info in the coming days/weeks.

2x12 seems the most logical to me

An 8 team second division

I'm guessing it won't take too long before the next reform takes place ... maybe 2 divisions of 10 is the next step (like the Swiss).

Platini's sr. advisor asserted that professional football could disappear in 40 European countries over the next 10 years (without taking action) ... it's very unlikely that Belgium will be one of those countries but as we don't have a population of roughly 30M ... reforms will be needed to keep the leagues from turning into graveyards (2nd division wasn't viable and 3rd division clubs were declining promotion as they'd go bankrupt in 2nd).

PS this was Duchatelet/Ernst&Young's plan ... 2 x 12 before the new year and 3 x 8 after:

@WR @Wally ... how viable is professional football in Holland?

Granted those old farts on VI TV like to moan a lot (like all old people) ... yet it does look like plenty of Eredivisie clubs had or are currently having problems ... with the help of public funds and a top-heavy distribution of TV money, that's roughly the same as Italy ffs, it's odd that even the top clubs struggle.

It's probably true that the Eredivisie's licensing regulations are less strict than those of the Pro League, that Dutch clubs have digged deeper into the pockets of taxpayers than Belgian ones, that the distribution of TV money in Holland is less equitable than in Belgium, etc. ... probably it's also true that fun-sized countries will end up with a pint-sized league ... we'll find out if William Gaillard, the senior advisor of Platini, was right or not soon enough ... I'm guessing that the Eredivisie will need to go through a couple of reforms in the next 10 years as well.

Most sides in the Eredivisie (minus Dordt and Excelsior) should be able to be be financially ok and not have 22 players on minimum wages which is the case at Dordt.

NAC are just daft. They're on the financial drip, but still gave Erik Falkenburg bigger wages than what similar sized clubs wanted to give.

In the Eerste Divisie, you got Sparta, De Graafschap, Roda, NEC and VVV who should be able to be professional clubs.

Rest prob glorified semi-pro teams.

MVV and Roda should really just merge with the Parkstad stadium moving to the prettier and larger Maastricht, but that's just fantasy.

So 16+5 = 21 proper professional clubs then in Holland
Maybe add Volendam for 22 as they're able to be pro without having megalomaniac ideas.

In one of my older posts I looked at the TV deals in our leagues ... just a quick scan but it does provide an indication of how viable our leagues are:

Before Murdoch's visit to Holland, the Belgian league was generating more TV money than the Eredivisie ... VI even claims that in 2011/12 Eredivisie CV only had 35M euros to distribute (20M less than the Pro League) and what's worse Eredivisie Live had been losing money since its launch in 2008 ... making the Eredivisie the only competition in the world where clubs had to pay to broadcast their matches on TV.

=>http://www.vi.nl/nieuws/televisieink...dieptepunt.htm

However that changed after the Eredivisie clubs made a deal with Murdoch ... TV money increased to roughly 60M euros (for the 2013/14 season) and according to NRC Handelsblad Fox Sports Eredivisie saved many clubs.

In Belgium, TV money increased from 135M euros in the 2008-2011 Belgacom deal to 166M in the previous 2011-2014 Telenet deal (60M for 2013/14) ... these 2 telecom companies are deeply rooted in Belgium and to land the Pro League's media rights they've pushed each other to the limit.

=> http://sportmagazine.knack.be/sport/...al-170653.html

In the new deal MP&Silva got involved and promised to increase TV money even further to 70M euros, for the current season, going up to 80M for the 2017/18 season (reportedly MP&Silva will already lose money during this season). Still I very much doubt that the Pro league can sustainably generate more TV money than the Eredivisie.

Do you know whether it is possible for KFCO Beerschot Wilrijk to go directly to professional football?

Because imo it is ridiculous to play professional football in little towns like Lommel and Eupen when you have clubs like Beerschot Wilrijk or Antwerp who should not te be allowed to play professional football.
