Belgian teams in Europe 2009/2010

Even though the main discussions can be made in the specific club threads, I have decided to make this topic.

In general I'll try to update the European Rankings after each European matchday in this topic. Might be interesting to see what consequences the results of our teams have concerning that ranking.

Koster really sucks at Brugge no?

First all these defeats in pre-season, now a very narrow win versus Lahti...

Gent aren't out yet btw, who knows what happens in a probably sold out Ottenstadion...

Koster makes Club play better, but the results aren't following yet. Yesterday their defense was dramatic, almost as dramatic as the one of Sivasspor

Gent are out. No chance at all. Roma was way better yesterday and still missed some key players. Gent had the chances to win by the way yesterday. At 0-1 they had two good chances to make it 0-2. The penalty Roma got wasn't one in a million years by the way. A nice gift from the referee.

We see attacking moves that we havn't seen in a long time... Defence and mentality wise still lots of work left though..

But signs of improvement, that's for sure

Well it's exactly like you say, when you get chances to make it 0-2 and Roma's penalty was an unfair one, why Gent wouldn't be able to get those chances again at home and have a fair ref?

Hmm wonder where it will end then... without results I can't see him stay for a long time in Brugge, but let's wait untill the league starts.

Because Roma doesn't need to attack anymore. They can defend and counter. It's the exact opposite of yesterday, when Gent played with 10 in front of their own goal and counter attacked.

Italians are nasty opponents when their main task is defend a lead

Roma has 95% chance of progressing yes. To say they´re already there is exagerated. Every game has to be played.

Who would have guessed Rosenborg (back then an amateur team with not a single professional player) would win in San Siro and eliminate AC Milan 14 years ago?
Who would have guessed Copenhagen would kick Ajax out of the CL after losing the first leg at home?
Who could have imagined Germinal Ekeren eliminating Anderlecht in the Belgian Cup semi-finals with a 4-0 score after losing the first leg 2-0 (that was in 1995 or 1996 I believe) ...

Anyways, with a bit of thinking I can sum up countless examples. Obviously Ghent have only a 5% chance to progress, probably 1 or 2% is more realistic. But to say they are already out, is a bit exagerated.

By the way, some of the leagues more or less close to the Belgian one are doing well. Very likely 2 or maybe 3 out of 4 Israeli teams will progress (Gothenburg-Hapoel 1-3 and Bnei Yehuda have had an impressive run), the Czech teams are doing surprisingly well (Aberdeen-Olomouc 1-5 ) and the Greek teams are doing well also (I do see Pana qualify against Sparta Praha which has peaks but also very often lows and I can´t see them survive the hell of Athens ... of course either the Czech or the Greek league will lose points there so for the Belgian perspective that one doesn´t really matter that much)

Question is if Koster is to blame? Stijnen hit the nail on the head: FCB is not on par with Standard and Anderlecht right now and other than Donk they did not do any decent shopping. Devroe is messing things up there, but that doesn´t surprise me because he has worked for KVO in the past and brought us to division 3 back then with his disaster transfers and tactics ... Fact is, Koster doesn´t seem to be the one deserving the blame.

Other than that, I do see Club qualify against Lahti. Because Lahti will probably concede goals at home as well. So it may not be an impressive result, I do expect FCB to progress. Pity that a brilliant player like Litmanen has to finish his career with a mediocre team like this.

LOL

I see symptoms of a clear system, which I haven't seen in 2 years. I see clear offensive patrons and I see a high level of training

You can't expect a bunch of 20-year old players who just spend 2 year with the worst coach I've ever seen with us, to pick up a new system in 6 weeks. Beside that, we do lack 2 reinforcements who'll probably be presented in the next couple of weeks

I saw better football in the games against AZ and Lahti than the last 2 years, and that's only after 6 weeks. It's not Koster's fault that guys like Sonck just ignore the tactical guidelines, and just walk around wherever they want

Well, we simply just don't have the money to go out and splash some cash in bad times like both those teams. We made a clear decision to build a new team with young, talented guys and a new coach who wants to play football. You don't "buy" a team, you create one. And like it or not, but that takes time. Maybe this period is a good one to get rid off all those hyping ***** and hypocrite "top team supporters" and to try to get some of our old charm back.

I like the way those young lads keep on improving, and I'm willing to give them time. And with 2 decent signings, I really don't rate us much worse than those from Brussels and Standard

Btw, it's not Devroe's fault that we don't have any money, that our best striker is dead and that the government blocks our only way of becoming a bigger side. That man works with the resources he has, and thanks to the financial crisis and that horrible stadium, they aren't big

Or that Donk had a small blackout at the first goal, and Alcaraz just plays so bad to leave as soon as possible ...

People make mistakes, that's what separates us from robots.

Mistakes are forgiveable, players who just say "**** you" to their coach and ignore their tasks aren't

Would be an easy call if there was money available to get a replacement. In that case you could seel him right away.

Selling him and replacing him by Simaeys isn't a option I assume ?

Well, the biggest problem is that he wants to extend his contract, but his wife wants to leave. We're not in the position that we can let him walk away for free at the end of the season, so he needs to be sold this summer.

Replacing him by Simaeys would be a decent option, but I like Simaeys presence and length in midfield. He can be replaced by Kruska (who I really want in the team), but that would give us very little depth in midfield. We also need to get rid off Geraerts (and his contract) as soon as possible

In an ideal world:

Sell: De Mets, Alcaraz, Kucera, Geraerts, Sonck, Djokic
Buy: RB, CV, SC, FLC

GK: Stijnen/De Vlieger/Lenaerts

RB: XXX/Vermeulen
CV: Donk/XXX/Ciman/(Simaeys)
LB: Klukowski/Cleber

DM: Simaeys/Kruska
AMRC: Vadis/Vargas/Jeffrey
AMLC: Blondel/Daerden/Jeffrey

FRC: Dirar/Dahmane/Chavez/(Vargas)
FC: Akpala/XXX
FLC: XXX/Dahmane/Meeus/(Vargas)

Stijnen

XXX Donk XXX Klukowski

Vadis Simaeys/Kruska Blondel

Dirar Akpala XXX

Bad week for Belgium in the UEFA Rankings. Only Club grabbed 0,5 point, while Bulgaria did better. They come closer and closer, while the gap between us and Greece is increasing
