Jupiler Pro League 2009/2010 - The Reformation

Regular Competition
16 teams playing twice aganst eachother, so there will be 30 matchdays. After these 30 games, the league table will be split up ...

Play Off 1
Play Off 1 will be played between the first six teams of the league table after the regular competition. The total amount of points a team gained after the regular competition will be divided by 2. So a team with 60 points after 30 league games, will start the PO1 with 30 points. Each team will play twice against the other 5 teams.

The team ending first after this mini-league will be crowned as the new champions. The second team will qualify for the Champions League qualifications / Europe League. The third ranked team will play Europe League. The 4th ranked team plays an additional PO to get that last European ticket.

Play Off 2
Play Off 2 will be played between the numbers 7 - 14. Two groups of 4 teams will be formed:

Group 1
n°7
n°9
n°11
n°13

Group 2
n°8
n°10
n°12
n°14

The winners of both groups will face eachother over 2 games. The winner of these encounters will face the 4th ranked team of PO1. The team winning that additional PO gets a Europe League ticket.

Promotion & Relegation
The n°15 of the regular competition will play a PO with 3 EXQI League teams. Winner of that mini-league stays / promotes to the Jupiler Pro League.

The n°16 of the JPL relegates directly to the EXQI League and gets replaced by the EXQI League's champions.

I really want to give this format a shot to be honest. Ending the season with only top games should be quite exciting, no ?

The most ridiculous rule is that the first 6 teams see their points total divided by two. What's the point of playing these first 30 matchdays then except gaining qualification for PO1 ?

And off course you can discuss about the fact the n°1 after 30 matchdays shouldn't be crowned as champions before PO1. As also this rule makes these first part of the season quite useless for the real big teams.

Another positive point may be the fact the big guns could (and should, but won't p) give some youngsters more playing minutes, as it doesn't really matter if they have an (dis)advantage of, let's say, 10 points before starting the PO's.

As long as we don't face Standard again on the day they can become champions it seems ok to me

Also worth a post:

This format will be used for at least 2 (!) seasons. After the 2010/2011 season it will get reviewed ...

Again, few small additions:

* AA Ghent was not formed in the 1860s, otherwise they would be the oldest club of the country
* Sporting Lokeren, Westerlo, Mouscron and Kortrijk were all mergers. Kortrijk merged in the early 70s (Kortrijk Sport and Stade Kortrijk), Mouscron was formed somewhere around 1964 (not sure of the old clubs' names), Westerlo merger dates from over 70 years ago so maybe not worth mentioning, and Sporting Lokeren had several mergers (the most recent ones being with St Niklase SK which in itself was already a merger of St Niklase SK and Excelsior St Niklaas)

I hate the 16 teams league and I hate play-offs. Hopefully that review after 2 seasons will set things back to how it was. It has always worked with 18 teams for so many decades... And look at Holland, fans all massively dislike the playoffs. This is Europe, not America. Playoffs may have a tradition in North American sports but except for Switzerland not a single European country has such a tradition going back longer than a handful of seasons.

It's not that Club gained much points agains the other teams out of the top 6 this season p

vs Anderlecht: 1-1 & 1-0 > 1 point
vs Standard: 1-4 & 2-0 > 0 points
vs Gent: 1-4 & 3-0 > 0 points
vs Zulte Waregem: 2-0 & 3-1 > 3 points
vs Westerlo: 2-0 & 1-1 > 4 points

So it's not the case that they only screwed up against the small teams. These results in these new PO1 would be a disaster for CLub I assume.

Dumping Sjakie will automatically gain us at least 10 points

And my opinion about this team remains the same. The amount of talent is high, very high. It's up to our board to add 2-3 key elements and to Koster to finally get them in a decent system

We have more "talent" than the Sollied group, it just isn't a team

²

Mainly someone like Verheyen seems to be missed, who always went 100% for it, and scored a lot of goals. And off course someone with leadership like he had.

You won't agree, but with Sonck you have one of the best goalscorers in the JPL. Problem will be to fit him in in a 4-3-3, which clearly isn't the system fitting best for someone like Sonck.

You've got enough quality in midfield and up front to at least be a real contender for the league title. Just in defence some new players should be bought imo.

Sonck wants to go abroad again, I surely won't stop him. Let's hope the board uses his head for once and tries to make some money for a 31-year old with only one year left on his contract (that alone will be hard enough). Sonck may be our best striker, but he won't fit in Koster's system and will be a liability to the squad next year.

That's indeed Sonck his problem. He doesn't fit in a 4-3-3 as he always needs the support of another striker at his side. When playing him alone up front he always backs down to midfield, to 'feel' the ball more.

Guess a move would indeed be the best solution for Sonck & Club Brugge. I can't understand why he would want to move abroad again though. He did fail at Ajax and Gladbach already, and he doesn't get any younger ...

Because he's an arrogant ass who wants to prove it wasn't his fault?

This poll was published in HLN, not reliable newspaper but they took it from Sport/Voetbal Magazine so it is not a HLN organised poll... Good start for the new concept: the poll shows the majority of players would be against the play off and against football in the X-mas holidays.

I somewhat question the reliability of this poll though when Deschacht would be the most underrated player and Witsel the most overrated

Article:

(belga/adv)

Nothing more to add. Also Defour being in the top 3 of overrated players is just a real howler.

He has vision, a superb technique & has more than enough physical capacities. The way he protects a ball is top.

The only thing he lacks is pace, but as a central midfielder, that's something you may lack imo.

But he isn't a player for Arsenal, Milan, Barcelona like some people make him be

I'm probably not the right one to judge, and I'm not denying that he's a good player, but what I saw from him in games against us was rather poor
