Golden Boot 2008: Axel Witsel !

Tonight the most prestigous trophy in Belgian football is handed out, and we have no golden boot topic yet Time for a last minute bet. Question is very straight forward: who will win?

The press has put the following players forward as big favourites:

Alex Witsel
Dieumerci Mbokani
Marouane Felaini
Milan Jovanovic
Steven Defour
Mbark Boussouffa

So it seems it could be a Standard dominated edition, but then the press often enough was wrong in their predictions (remember Gilles De Bilde who was not even mentioned amongst the favourites but still won it?).

My prediction: Jovanovic

You can say of Jova whatever you want about being an ego and being arrogant (which he is), but the guy is a very good player who has been decisive for Standard on so many moments. I think we can agree Standard was the best team in the last calendar year, both domestically and in Europe. IMO Jovanovic is the biggest exponent of this success, so I would say he would be a logical choice. Felaini would be top favourite if he were still in Liege, but I fear that by missing out on many second round votes he will not have enough left to keep the other favourites behind him (even when he will undoubtly score a huge amount of points in the first round based on the second half of last season)

So my bet is Jovanovic as winner, with Felaini or Witsel as nr 2.

Golden Boot 2008

Who wins the Golden Boot ? The question will get his answer tonight ...

But who will it be ?

Milan Jovanovic; crucial for Standard in 2008

Axel Witsel; the shining star of Standard

Dieumerci Mbokani; His goals made Standard champions again after 25 years.

Steven Defour; The winner of last year has more competition this year.

Marouane Fellaini; Only played half a season in our league, but still he's one of the possible winners.

Guillaume Gillet; His goals were crucial for Anderlecht sometimes

Mbark Boussoufa; The 2006 winner played a good first round in 2008.

Stijn Stijnen; Saved Club Brugge many times.

Wesley Sonck; He's there again, at Club and with our NT.

Elyaniv Barda; top goalscorer of last season.

The bookmakers expect Milan Jovanovic to win it:
Milan Jovanovic 1.55
Axel Witsel 2.55
Steven Defour 8.00
Dieumerci Mbokani 9.00
Marouane Fellaini 25.00
Guillaume Gillet 75.00

It may be clear it will be a Standard party this year

Witsel is the best player of them all, but Stijnen was the most important for his team

Oh well, since it's a mauve election I wouldn't be surprised if Frutos wins it or something like that

But that's not what the Golden Boot rewards. Otherwise Proto would have won it while playing for La Lou, or Hassan last year (if we talk about importance for a team)

I figure Witsel or Mbokani.

Jovanovic seems to be the favorite, but I don't know. He doesn't always dominate games like Witsel or Mbokani, sometimes he's just invisible.

Stijnen/Sonck obviously will get the most points among Club players. I think Sonck definitely has a chance to win the 2nd round votes, as he has been terrific since the new season started.

Btw Tom, wasn't Akpala last years top goalscorer?

Scotty doesn't know.

He isn't (imho). But because most Belgians are completely the opposite of arrogant, it doesn't take a lot for us to find other people arrogant :smileani: Me, I just think Jova is a great character. His interview are hilarious, and he always speaks from the heart.

Like Sav said, that's a typical Belgian reaction.

Jova says things a Belgian player would never do, like "Standard can win the UEFA Cup" or like in todays newspaper "To be honest, I expect to win the Golden Boot". He always speaks from his heart. Some people can't handle that. And as far as I know, Jovanovic never really said something arrogant. Most people laugh with some of his quotes, but in the end he has been right quite some times.

Anyhow: I voted on Witsel. He's the best player, the most complete one. Last year proved (luckely) stats doesn't say everything in this selection. Otherwise Mbokani would win it with a big difference.

Jovanovic is actually considered one of Serbia's more down to earth players. Bosko Jankovic, now THAT's arrogance. Jovanovic is a small town/country boy type, they are usually honest and upfront.

Anyway, I'll check back later to see who won.

You could have expected it: One great game at Bordeaux, and scoring in the Cup final is more then enough to make the Belgian Sports Press ejaculate ...

I'm still pretty convinced Witsel will win it p

And ow: Fellaini's Girl

According to RTBF radio, that **** wins it with one more point than Witsel

Oh well, maybe it's the only way to show the entire footy world how ridiculous this trophy is.

Fellaini wins the "Best Belgian player abroad" after playing a HALF season with Everton

Freaking hilarious

EDIT: STOP THE PRESSES! AA Gent finally won a price ... "de Mascotterace"

Well Fellaini has been very good, but like you say, he only played half a season. Vertonghen or Dembele would be the most logical choice.
