Belgian Player of the Year 2008

Almost every forum has their own Player of the Year election, so why wouldn't we have one ?

The 15 Candidates:
Steven Defour: One of the best players in our own league, and really important for the Standard team we saw in Europe. Standard won the title for the first time in 25 years under his captaincy.

Moussa Dembele: Potentially propably the best Belgian football player, who suffered with some injuries this year. Couldn't really guide AZ into the right direction, but played great at the Olympics.

Marouane Fellaini: Was worth €20 million for Everton, and also had a great impact at the championship winning side of Standard last year. Starts to adapt in the Premier League.

Guillaume Gillet: Another player shining in the Jupiler League. Gillet didn't had any problems at all making the move from Gent to Anderlecht, and has been decisive at several occasions for Anderlecht.

Vincent Kompany: Didn't play too much at Hamburg anymore, and made the move to Manchester City. He's managed to establish himself at Manchester, and he's quite unthinkable out of Man City their first eleven. Had no problems at all to adapt to Premier League football.

Kevin Mirallas: Was a threat for the defences at the Olympics and earned a transfer to Saint Etienne. So far, he hasn't been able to get a starting spot at Les Verts.

Gaby Mudingayi: Playing in the Serie A for several years now, Mudingayi fought himself into the first eleven of Bologna, after making the move from Lazio.

Timmy Simons: Simons won again the Eredivisie with PSV, and has been a regular for many years now at the Dutch top team. He's also the captain of our NT, which actually and finally seems to be able to play football again.

Wesley Sonck: Talking about the NT, Wesley Sonck has been one of the most important players the last couple of months. He scores as well at national as international level again. A nice comeback after his failed adventures in Holland and Germany.

Kenny Steppe: Time for another talent. Steppe had a great season at Germinal Beerschot, and was togheter with Colman and Losada decisive for the great season the club had. Got his move to Heerenveen, where he also has a starting spot now.

Stijn Stijnen: Stijnen has been of great importance yet again for Club Brugge this year. Without him, Club could have easely got some points less then they actually have now. Also the n°1 of the Belgian NT.

Daniel Van Buyten: They may call him Daniel Von Blunder, but Van Buyten is still playing at Bayern Munchen. None of the other Belgian players can say they play at a European top team ...

Thomas Vermaelen: Regular at Ajax now. Has played at the centre of the Ajax defence for the biggest part of the year. Recently he got moved to the left back. Also performed good at the Olympics.

Jan Vertonghen: Vertonghen is propably of a higher importance then Vermaelen at Ajax. His fighting spirit and physical abilities also helped the Olympic team as the NT this year.

Axel Witsel: Propably the most big discovery of Standard. Witsel has everything to become a top player. Technique, physical abilities and a grown up football mind. You rarely see someone as mature of Witsel on his age.

Fellaini in my opinion, Witsel is still more of a talent.

As for the 'Dutchies', Dembele was unlucky last season but very important at this moment, although it's mainly El Hamdaoui who scores the goals at this moment, his time has still to come, and certainly will come soon.
The Ajax-duo isn't bad, but in my opinion Vertonghen is a midfielder while Vermaelen still has to learn a lot (but that's normal at such a young age).
Same goes for Steppe, very young but certainly talented.

As for the rest I've to show respect for Sonck who's again very important and good in Belgium, quite weird he can't make it abroad...

Anyway, Fellaini was very important for Standard. He got his transfer, well deserved, and does quite well at Everton too, in a league where everything goes 10 times faster.

A big talent though He's one of the favourites to win the Golden Boot in my opinion, togheter with a few fellow Standard players off course.

Axel Witsel is leading narrowly this competition so far, with only one vote in front of Jan Vertonghen.

I'm curious who will win
